Chapter 12: The Daughter Margaret Erased From the Family

Nobody expected the answer to come from Margaret.

Because she never gave answers when silence could create confusion.

But this time, silence wasn’t protecting her.

It was condemning her.

Daniel stood slowly.

“Did you know about her?””

Margaret looked exhausted.

For once, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Yes.””

The word barely left her mouth.

Rachel covered her face.

“Oh my God.””

Daniel stared.

“You knew I had a sister?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“It was complicated.””

Daniel laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Everything with you is complicated.””

I watched him.

Because this was the moment he finally understood.

His mother hadn’t just hidden things from him.

She had built his entire life around missing information.

“She contacted me years ago,” Margaret admitted.

Daniel looked shocked.

“She contacted you?””

“Yes.””

“And you ignored her?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice broke.

“You ignored her?””

“She was angry.””

“She had every right to be!””

The room shook with his anger.

I had never seen Daniel speak to his mother like that.

Never.

Margaret looked at me.

“You think you understand.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I understand what your father wanted.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“He wanted his family to know the truth before it was too late.””

The room became quiet.

Because that was the real tragedy.

Everyone had spent years protecting secrets.

And all those secrets only created more pain.

Daniel sat down.

“What was her name?””

I answered softly.

“Anna.””

He repeated it.

“Anna.””

A name that should have been familiar.

A name that should have been part of family conversations.

A name that had been erased.

“Where is she now?”” Rachel asked.

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because after your father died, Margaret made sure contact stopped.””

Margaret immediately responded.

“That’s not true.””

But nobody believed her anymore.

Daniel looked at her.

“Where is she?””

Margaret stayed silent.

Then Daniel asked again.

“Where is my sister?””

Her face changed.

And that was when everyone knew.

She knew.

She always knew.

“I don’t have to tell you anything,” Margaret said.

The old Margaret returned.

Cold.

Defensive.

Controlling.

But this time, nobody was afraid.

Daniel stood.

“Yes.””

His voice was calm.

“You do.””

She stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because she is my family.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Because Margaret had spent years convincing him she was the only family that mattered.

And now he was seeing the damage that belief had caused.

After the meeting ended, Daniel and I stayed behind.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, he asked:

“Do you know where Anna lives?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

His eyes widened.

“You do?””

“I found her.””

“When?””

“Before your father died.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked down.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another promise.

Another piece of a life he never knew existed.

“I need to meet her.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

But before we could leave, Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Quiet.

Uncertain.

“Is this Daniel?””

He froze.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Anna.””

Daniel looked at me.

And in that moment, we both knew.
