Chapter 8: The House on Blackwater Road

The message stayed on my screen long after the boat had disappeared into the darkness.

COME HOME, MOM.

I read it again.

Then again.

I couldn't decide what frightened me more—the words themselves or the fact that I had no idea what Jared meant by home.

Michael stood at the wheel.

Arthur sat opposite me, one hand pressed against his side.

The water was black and restless around us.

I looked at him.

“Are you hurt?””

He glanced down.

“Not badly.””

There was blood on his shirt.

“You're bleeding.””

“It's a graze.””

“You didn't mention it.””

“We had more important problems.””

Michael gave a short laugh.

“That's an understatement.””

I looked at him.

“Where are we going?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“I've heard that before.””

He didn't answer.

“Michael.””

He kept his eyes on the water.

“Blackwater Road.””

I frowned.

“I've never heard of it.””

“You wouldn't have.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas erased it from every map.””

I stared at him.

“Of course he did.””

Michael guided the boat through a narrow channel.

For ten minutes, the city lights grew smaller behind us.

Then there was nothing.

Only water.

Trees.

Fog.

And the low hum of the engine.

I thought about Jared.

The image of him standing beside Vanessa wouldn't leave my mind.

He had looked straight at me from the balcony.

Not desperate.

Not trapped.

Not confused.

He had looked certain.

If the photograph was real, then my son had known about Northern Ridge before I did.

He had known where I would go.

He had helped Vanessa search for it.

And somehow, despite everything, some part of me still wanted to believe there was an explanation.

That was the worst part.

A mother could recognize danger and still make excuses for her child.

I hated myself for it.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Michael glanced at me.

“Everything?””

“Everything you know about Jared.””

He was silent.

Then he said,

“Jared wasn't supposed to be involved.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“I know.””

“You've spent the entire night giving me half-truths.””

He looked at Arthur.

Arthur said nothing.

Michael exhaled.

“Thomas was investigating Daniel for years.””

“Yes.””

“But Daniel wasn't the real threat.””

“Who was?””

“An organization.””

I frowned.

“That sounds like something from a spy movie.””

“It isn't.””

He turned the wheel.

“They used legitimate businesses as fronts. Construction firms. Investment companies.

Shipping companies. Private equity groups.””

“And Thomas was involved?””

“At first.””

“How involved?””

Michael's jaw tightened.

“Very.””

I stared at him.

“So Vanessa was telling the truth.””

“About some of it.””

“What part?””

“Thomas helped create the structure.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“He thought he could control it.””

“And could he?””

“No.””

Michael paused.

“That's what destroyed him.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Did you know?””

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.””

“You both knew what my husband was involved in.””

“We knew different parts.””

“And I knew nothing.””

Michael looked at me.

“You knew the part that mattered to him.””

“What part was that?””

“You.””

I almost laughed.

“That sounds convenient.””

“It's true.””

Michael's voice softened.

“Thomas believed that everything he built was worth protecting only if you survived it.””

I looked down.

I wanted to believe that.

But love didn't erase lies.

It didn't erase secret accounts or hidden children or years of deception.

The boat slowed.

Ahead, a narrow wooden dock emerged through the fog.

An old house stood among the trees.

It looked abandoned.

The roof sagged.

The windows were dark.

The porch leaned to one side.

I stared.

“This is safe?””

Michael shut off the engine.

“For the moment.””

We stepped onto the dock.

The boards creaked beneath my shoes.

Arthur followed, still holding his side.

Michael walked up the path.

I stopped at the bottom of the porch.

Something about the house bothered me.

I had seen it before.

Not in person.

In a photograph.

Thomas had once shown me a picture of an old family home in Tennessee.

He said it belonged to a distant relative.

I had never thought about it again.

I looked at Michael.

“This was Mother's house.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My breath caught.

Our mother had died fifteen years earlier.

The house had supposedly burned down the following winter.

“That can't be here.””

“It wasn't.””

“Then why are we standing in it?””

“Because it never burned down.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Michael opened the front door.

The smell of old wood and dust filled the air.

“Thomas bought the property under another name.””

I stepped inside.

Everything was exactly as I remembered.

The yellow wallpaper.

The old staircase.

The fireplace.

Even the little crack in the hallway mirror.

My mother used to keep a brass clock on the mantel.

It was still there.

I touched it.

“Why?””

Michael closed the door.

“To hide people.””

“Who?””

“People the organization was trying to find.””

“Ethan?””

Michael nodded.

My heart jumped.

“Ethan was here?””

“For a while.””

“When?””

“Twelve years ago.””

The year he disappeared.

I turned.

“Then why did you tell me you didn't know where he was?””

“I didn't know where he went after he left.””

“Where is he now?””

Michael hesitated.

“He's alive.””

“You already told me that.””

“He's closer than you think.””

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

We all froze.

Arthur raised his gun.

Michael looked toward the staircase.

“Ethan?””

No answer.

Michael climbed slowly.

I followed.

“Stay behind me,” Arthur whispered.

We reached the second floor.

Three doors.

One at the end.

Another on the left.

Another on the right.

Michael opened the left door.

An empty bedroom.

He opened the right.

Another empty room.

Then he stopped at the final door.

There was a small scratch carved into the wood.

A triangle.

And inside it—

the letter L.

My breath caught.

“Thomas.””

Michael nodded.

He pushed the door open.

The room contained a desk.

A bed.

A small bookshelf.

And a wall covered in photographs.

My photographs.

Jared's photographs.

Thomas's photographs.

Ethan's photographs.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

Arthur.

Michael.

I stepped closer.

There were hundreds.

Dates.

Locations.

Notes.

I saw one of me leaving a hospital.

One of me sitting at a restaurant.

One of Jared getting married.

One of Vanessa entering a bank.

One of Thomas meeting Daniel.

And one photograph stopped me completely.

It showed me and Jared on Christmas morning.

He was twenty-three.

I was holding a gift.

Jared was smiling.

Behind us stood Thomas.

The picture had been taken from outside the house.

Someone had been watching us.

I felt sick.

“How long?””

Michael didn't answer.

“How long have they been watching my family?””

“Years.””

I turned toward him.

“Who took these?””

“Thomas.””

“Why?””

“To identify who was compromised.””

I looked at the photographs.

“And did he ever know?””

Michael didn't respond.

“Was I compromised?””

“No.””

“Jared?””

Michael hesitated.

“That depends on what year you're asking about.””

I stared at him.

He walked to the desk.

A laptop sat there.

He opened it.

There was no password.

Inside was one folder.

JARED.

Michael clicked it.

There were financial records.

Messages.

Photographs.

Audio files.

And one document labeled:

THE FALL.

I opened it.

A timeline appeared.

Jared had been recruited by Daniel at twenty-six.

He had started moving small amounts of money.

Then larger ones.

But beneath every transaction was a second record.

A matching transfer.

To accounts connected to witnesses.

Refugees.

Families.

People who had disappeared.

Jared hadn't been keeping the money.

He had been moving it.

Protecting them.

I looked at Michael.

“You said he wasn't innocent.””

“He wasn't.””

“Why?””

“Because he did things that can't be undone.””

“What things?””

“Threats.””

“Against whom?””

“People who wanted to expose Ethan.””

I stared at the screen.

“He hurt people?””

“Yes.””

“Did he kill anyone?””

Michael looked away.

I understood.

“Tell me.””

“No.””

“Michael.””

“No.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“You don't need that answer tonight.””

I turned on him.

“Yes, I do.””

Arthur looked at me.

“Jared fired a gun once.””

My stomach twisted.

“Who did he shoot?””

“Daniel's accountant.””

“Did he die?””

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

At least he hadn't killed anyone.

But that wasn't enough to make everything clean.

I returned to the laptop.

One file was dated three days earlier.

I opened it.

A video appeared.

Jared was sitting in a dark room.

His face was bruised.

He stared directly at the camera.

“Mom.””

I leaned closer.

“I know what you're going to think.””

He looked exhausted.

“And maybe I deserve it.””

He swallowed.

“I wasn't working with Vanessa the way you think.””

I looked at Michael.

Jared continued.

“I gave her information because she threatened Ethan.””

My heart stopped.

“Ethan came back six months ago.””

Arthur leaned forward.

Jared looked around nervously.

“Mom, he contacted me.””

A pause.

“He said someone inside the family was helping Daniel.””

My fingers tightened.

“I thought it was Vanessa.””

He shook his head.

“I was wrong.””

The video paused.

Then continued.

“I found out the truth.””

His face changed.

He looked terrified.

“Mom, the person who's been giving them information isn't Michael.””

Michael stared at the screen.

I turned toward him.

Jared said:

“It's Arthur.””

The room went silent.

I slowly turned toward Arthur.

He didn't move.

His gun hung at his side.

His face was unreadable.

Jared continued.

“I know Dad trusted him.””

“But Arthur was the person who changed the trust documents.””

“He was the one who made it possible for Vanessa to gain access.””

“He was the one who told them about Northern Ridge.””

The video ended.

I stared at Arthur.

He looked at me.

I couldn't speak.

Michael immediately raised his gun.

Arthur stepped backward.

“Put it down.””

Michael didn't.

“Tell her.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

I heard my own voice.

“Is it true?””

Silence.

“Arthur?””

He looked at me.

“Some of it.””

Michael swore.

I felt my stomach drop.

“What part?””

Arthur walked to the window.

“I changed the trust documents.””

“Why?””

“To protect Thomas.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

He turned.

“Thomas wanted to put everything in your name.””

“Yes.””

“But he knew the organization would come after you.””

“So?””

“So I changed the structure.””

“You changed my inheritance.””

“I delayed it.””

“Why?””

“Because Jared was under surveillance.””

I shook my head.

“I don't understand.””

“Thomas believed Jared could still be saved.””

“Saved from what?””

“From himself.””

Arthur looked at Michael.

“Michael knew.””

Michael didn't deny it.

Arthur continued.

“We needed someone inside the family.””

My voice dropped.

“Jared.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She discovered the plan.””

“So she joined them.””

“Yes.””

“Daniel?””

“Was already working with them.””

“And you?””

Arthur lowered his head.

“I became the person they trusted.””

I stared at him.

“You were working undercover?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Michael.

“Then why did Jared say you betrayed Thomas?””

“Because I had to make it look real.””

My mind spun.

“So none of this is what it looked like.””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

“Not the trust.””

“No.””

“Not Jared.””

“No.””

“Not Vanessa.””

“She is absolutely dangerous.””

“Then who is?””

Arthur's answer came quietly.

“The person funding all of it.””

“Who?””

Arthur didn't speak.

Michael did.

“Thomas.””

I felt the world stop.

Arthur stared at him.

Michael nodded slowly.

“Thomas didn't destroy the network.””

I looked at him.

“He inherited it.””

Michael turned toward the photographs on the wall.

“And when he died, the network needed a new owner.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Michael looked at me.

“You.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He pointed toward the brass key.

“Your husband left you the master control.””

“That can't be.””

“It is.””

“Why would Thomas do that?””

“Because he believed you'd make the one choice he never could.””

“What choice?””

“Burn it all.””

I stared at him.

Arthur reached into his coat and pulled out a second envelope.

“This was supposed to be given to you tomorrow.””

He handed it to me.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

Thomas's handwriting.

Leah,

I know by now you don't trust anyone.

You shouldn't.

But there is one thing I need you to understand.

I didn't leave you the cabin because I wanted you to inherit my world.

I left it to you because I wanted you to end it.

Below that was a handwritten address.

One sentence followed.

This is where the original records are kept.

I looked at the address.

My blood went cold.

I knew the place.

Everyone in Miami knew it.

The headquarters of Bennett Global.

Thomas's oldest company.

The building had been closed since his death.

I looked at Arthur.

“When did Thomas write this?””

“Two days before he died.””

“And you waited until now?””

“I was told to.””

“By whom?””

Arthur's face changed.

“Thomas.””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Thomas is dead.””

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then who gave you the instruction?””

Arthur said nothing.

Michael stepped closer.

“Arthur.””

He looked at us.

Then he reached into his pocket.

His phone was ringing.

He looked at the screen.

His face went white.

I saw the caller ID.

THOMAS BENNETT.

I froze.

Michael stepped backward.

Arthur answered.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Arthur whispered:

“Thomas?””

A man's voice came through the phone.

Calm.

Low.

Alive.

“Arthur.””

My heart stopped.

Arthur's face collapsed.

The voice continued.

“She's with you, isn't she?””

I felt the room spin.

Michael stared at me.

I stared at the phone.

Then the voice said:

“Leah, I'm sorry you had to find out this way.””

My knees weakened.

Thomas was alive.

Or someone had learned how to sound exactly like him.

And then the voice said the words that terrified me more than anything else that night.

“Come to the company.””

A pause.

“Your son is waiting for you.””

The call ended.

And beneath the recording on the laptop, a new file appeared by itself.

The filename contained only one thing.

TODAY'S DATE.

I clicked it.

The video showed Jared.

Standing beside Thomas.

May you like

Both of them alive.

And Jared was holding a gun to my husband's head.
