Chapter 7: The Brother in the Penthouse
Michael stepped out of the living room shadows as calmly as if we had arranged to meet for coffee.
He wore a charcoal suit.
No tie.
His silver watch caught the light.
His hair was shorter than I remembered, almost completely gray at the temples.
But the eyes were the same.
The eyes of my little brother.
The boy who used to steal cookies from my kitchen.
The teenager who drove me to the hospital when I broke my ankle.
The man who had stood beside me at Thomas's funeral and held my shoulders while I cried.
The man I hadn't seen in eleven years.
I stared at him.
“Michael?””
He smiled.
“Hello, Leah.””
Arthur moved between us.
Michael looked at the gun in Arthur's hand.
“You can put that away.””
“No.””
Michael sighed.
“You always were dramatic.””
Arthur didn't lower the weapon.
I couldn't take my eyes off my brother.
“You're alive.””
Michael gave me a confused look.
“Of course I'm alive.””
“You disappeared.””
“I moved.””
“You stopped calling.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His smile disappeared.
“Because Thomas told me to.””
My stomach tightened.
“Thomas?””
Michael nodded.
“Your husband made sure I stayed away from you.””
I looked at Arthur.
He didn't speak.
I turned back to Michael.
“Why would Thomas do that?””
Michael walked toward the kitchen.
“Because he was afraid of what I'd tell you.””
I followed him.
Arthur stayed close.
“What would you tell me?””
Michael opened a cabinet.
He took out three glasses.
Then, unbelievably, a bottle of whiskey.
He placed everything on the counter.
“Sit down.””
I didn't move.
“I'm not sitting.””
Michael poured himself a drink.
“Fine.””
He took a sip.
“Then listen.””
Arthur watched him carefully.
Michael looked at me.
“Thomas was not the man you think he was.””
I heard the same words Vanessa had used.
It should have felt familiar.
Instead, it made me angry.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it's true.””
“You're going to have to do better.””
Michael set the glass down.
“Thomas and I worked together.””
My stomach dropped.
“Worked together doing what?””
“Investigating money.””
“Daniel's money?””
Michael nodded.
“Daniel was only one piece.””
“What pieces?””
Michael leaned against the counter.
“Companies.””
“Which companies?””
“Thomas's.””
I stared at him.
“He investigated his own companies?””
“After he realized what some of his partners were doing.””
Arthur interrupted.
“That's not the whole story.””
Michael smiled.
“Of course it isn't.””
He turned to me.
“Thomas didn't tell you about the first account.””
“What first account?””
“The one that started everything.””
Arthur's expression changed.
Michael saw it.
“Ah.””
He smiled.
“So you do know.””
Arthur said nothing.
Michael looked at me.
“Your husband began moving money through private trusts seventeen years ago.””
“Why?””
“To protect it.””
“From whom?””
“From the government.””
I frowned.
“Why would he need protection from the government?””
Michael took another drink.
“He didn't trust the government to handle what he had discovered.””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
“No.””
He sighed.
“You want the truth in one neat sentence.””
“Yes.””
“There isn't one.””
I was losing patience.
“What happened to Ethan?””
Michael's face changed.
For the first time, the arrogance disappeared.
“Ethan found the ledger.””
“What ledger?””
“The real ledger.””
I looked at Arthur.
He lowered his gun slightly.
Michael continued.
“Not the digital records. Not the account statements. A handwritten record showing who received what.””
“Forty-two million?””
“Much more.””
My stomach dropped.
“How much?””
Michael looked at me.
“Over one hundred twenty million.””
The room seemed to go silent.
I stared at him.
“Thomas had that much?””
“Thomas controlled that much.””
“Did he steal it?””
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
“Then where did it come from?””
“Investors.””
“Legitimate investors?””
“Some.””
“And the rest?””
Michael didn't answer.
I knew.
“Dirty money.””
“Yes.””
Arthur finally spoke.
“Michael, stop.””
“Why?””
“Because you're making her believe Thomas was part of it.””
“He was.””
My heart hurt.
“No.””
Michael looked directly into my eyes.
“He didn't create the network.””
“But he used it.””
“Yes.””
“And then tried to destroy it.””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
Arthur lowered himself into the chair opposite me.
Michael remained standing.
My mind raced through everything I had learned.
The cabin.
The tunnels.
The archives.
The money.
Ethan.
Jared.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
Now Michael.
It felt like every road led back to Thomas.
“Why did Ethan disappear?””
Michael's voice softened.
“Because he stole the ledger.””
“From Thomas?””
“No.””
“From Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Ethan was smarter than everyone thought.””
“He was a teenager.””
“He was twenty-four when he took it.””
I frowned.
“I thought he was sixteen in that picture.””
“That photograph was old.””
Michael stared toward the window.
“Ethan had been working with Thomas for years.””
“Working with him?””
“Secretly.””
I shook my head.
“He was Thomas's son.””
“Yes.””
“Why did Thomas hide him from me?””
“Because he believed you were in danger.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
“Because you were.””
Michael walked toward me.
“Leah, your brother wasn't the reason you disappeared from Thomas's life.””
“What does that mean?””
“I mean Thomas didn't hide Ethan because he was ashamed.””
My eyes filled.
“He hid him because Ethan was a target.””
I remembered the letter.
I'm alive.
Being watched.
Michael sat across from me.
“Ethan took the ledger.””
“Then Daniel came after him.””
“Daniel and someone else.””
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
“Your son.””
My heart broke all over again.
“No.””
“Jared found Ethan.””
“You said Jared wasn't responsible.””
“I said he wasn't the one who planned it.””
“Then what did he do?””
“Jared tried to warn Ethan.””
“About what?””
“That Daniel had discovered the ledger was missing.””
I stared.
“Then why does the photograph show Jared with Daniel?””
“Because Jared was pretending to cooperate.””
I looked at Arthur.
“He was undercover?””
“Not exactly,” Arthur said.
Michael nodded.
“Jared was trapped.””
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“So Vanessa…”
“Vanessa was already inside Daniel's network.””
“What about the penthouse?””
“Bait.””
“Jared knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he accept it?””
“Because Thomas told him to.””
I shook my head.
“Thomas left Jared the penthouse as a trap.””
“Exactly.””
“What was inside?””
Michael looked at Arthur.
Arthur answered quietly.
“The master ledger.””
My heart stopped.
“The real one?””
“Yes.””
“Then Vanessa wanted it.””
“Yes.””
“Daniel wanted it.””
“Yes.””
“And Jared?””
“He was trying to protect it.””
I closed my eyes.
For months, I had believed Jared wanted Thomas's money.
Maybe he had been protecting the only thing keeping all of us alive.
Then I remembered Vanessa's voice in the tunnel.
You were never supposed to inherit the cabin.
I looked at Michael.
“Why me?””
“Because Thomas transferred control of the master ledger to you.””
“What?””
“The cabin wasn't the inheritance.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Michael leaned closer.
“You still don't understand.””
He pointed toward the brass key on the table.
“That key doesn't open a security room.””
I looked down.
“What does it open?””
“Your husband left you access to the original trust.””
Arthur's expression tightened.
“Michael.””
“What?””
“You shouldn't be telling her this here.””
“Why?””
“Because we don't know who is listening.””
Michael's smile disappeared.
He looked toward the ceiling.
“That's the problem.””
I followed his gaze.
“What?””
“The penthouse security system was compromised.””
“By Vanessa?””
Michael shook his head.
“By someone who has had access for years.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“I don't know.””
I felt a chill.
“You don't know?””
“No.””
“Then why did you bring me here?””
“I didn't.””
A sound came from the hallway.
A soft click.
Michael froze.
Arthur stood immediately.
“Someone's coming.””
I turned toward the bedroom.
The lights flickered.
Then every lock in the penthouse clicked simultaneously.
Arthur grabbed my wrist.
“Back.””
The elevator bell sounded.
Once.
Twice.
The doors opened.
No one stepped out.
We stared.
Michael whispered,
“They're here.””
A phone on the kitchen counter began ringing.
Michael looked at it.
“I didn't bring that.””
Neither did I.
Arthur walked toward it.
“Don't answer.””
The phone kept ringing.
I looked at the caller ID.
Unknown.
Then the screen changed.
VIDEO CALL.
I stepped closer.
A face appeared.
Jared.
He was sitting inside a moving car.
His lip was bleeding.
“Mom!””
I grabbed the phone.
“Jared!””
“Listen to me!””
His voice was frantic.
“Don't trust Michael.””
Michael closed his eyes.
Jared continued.
“He's working with them.””
I looked at Michael.
He shook his head.
Jared's voice cracked.
“He helped Daniel find Ethan.””
Michael stepped forward.
“That was twelve years ago.””
Jared heard him.
“Michael!””
The video shook.
“Mom, don't let him touch the key!””
I looked down at the brass key.
Michael's eyes locked on it.
“I can explain.””
Jared shouted,
“No, you can't!””
The call suddenly cut.
I stared at the black screen.
Michael looked at me.
“Leah, I need you to listen.””
Arthur raised his gun.
“Take one step toward her and I shoot.””
Michael laughed.
“Arthur, if you wanted me dead, you would've done it eleven years ago.””
I looked at Arthur.
“What happened eleven years ago?””
Neither man answered.
I felt something shift inside me.
There were still secrets.
More than I could imagine.
I stood.
“I want the truth.””
Michael looked at me.
“So do I.””
“You both keep saying that.””
I held up the key.
“Then tell me what happened eleven years ago.””
Michael took a breath.
“Thomas believed someone in the family had betrayed him.””
“Who?””
“He thought it was you.””
I froze.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because money started disappearing from an account only you had access to.””
I stared at him.
“That's impossible.””
“I know.””
“Then why would he suspect me?””
Michael looked at Arthur.
“Because someone forged your signature.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
I felt sick.
“Who?””
Michael answered.
“Jared.””
The silence was absolute.
I couldn't breathe.
My son.
Again.
Another betrayal.
Then Arthur spoke.
“No.””
I turned.
Arthur looked at Michael.
“You know who forged the signature.””
Michael stared back.
“Do you?””
Arthur stepped toward him.
“You weren't supposed to come here.””
Michael's expression hardened.
“Neither were you.””
“Tell her.””
“Tell her what?””
“The truth about 2015.””
I looked between them.
“What happened in 2015?””
Michael's voice became cold.
“Your husband tried to expose the entire network.””
Arthur said,
“And Michael stopped him.””
My heart pounded.
“Why?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because I thought the only way to save you was to make Thomas believe I had betrayed him.””
I stared.
“What?””
“I took the blame.””
“For what?””
“For the missing money.””
My mind couldn't process it.
Arthur stepped forward.
“Michael didn't steal the money.””
“Then why did Thomas think he did?””
“Because I made sure he did.””
I looked at my brother.
“You sacrificed yourself?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Thomas told me the only way to protect you was to disappear.””
I swallowed.
“Then why come back now?””
Michael looked at the brass key.
“Because Thomas is dead.””
“That's not enough.””
“No.””
His eyes became serious.
“Because the people who wanted that ledger have finally found you.””
A crash exploded somewhere downstairs.
Glass shattered.
All three of us turned toward the elevator.
Michael whispered,
“They're inside.””
Arthur grabbed my hand.
“Back door.””
We ran.
The penthouse alarms finally screamed.
Michael reached a hidden panel beside the kitchen.
He entered a code.
A section of the wall opened.
I stared.
Another passage.
Of course.
Another hidden passage.
We rushed inside.
Arthur closed the panel behind us.
The alarm became muffled.
I could hear footsteps outside.
Then Vanessa's voice.
“Leah!””
Michael whispered,
“She knew we'd come here.””
Arthur nodded.
“I told you.””
Michael looked at me.
“She's not alone.””
I heard another voice.
Daniel.
“Open the door!””
Then another voice.
A voice I knew better than any other.
Jared.
“Mom!””
I turned toward Michael.
“Is that really him?””
Michael's face went pale.
“Yes.””
“What do we do?””
He looked at the passage ahead.
“Keep moving.””
“Where?””
“There is a boat below this building.””
Arthur frowned.
“A boat?””
Michael nodded.
“Thomas had an emergency route to the water.””
We hurried down the stairs.
At the bottom was a concrete dock.
A sleek black speedboat waited in darkness.
I stared.
“How many escape routes did my husband build?””
Michael gave a grim smile.
“Enough to survive his enemies.””
“And enough to confuse his wife.””
He didn't respond.
I stepped onto the boat.
Michael started the engine.
Arthur climbed aboard.
The motor roared.
As we pulled away from the dock, I looked back.
The penthouse tower rose above us, its windows glowing.
Then a figure appeared on the balcony.
Vanessa.
She watched us disappear into the night.
But she wasn't alone.
Daniel stood beside her.
And between them stood Jared.
I stared in horror.
Jared looked directly down at me.
His hands were free.
He wasn't tied up.
He wasn't wounded except for the blood on his lip.
Then he raised one hand.
Not waving.
Pointing.
At Michael.
Michael saw it.
His face changed.
“She's been lying.””
“What?””
Michael looked at me.
“Jared wasn't captured.””
The boat sped into the darkness.
“He was working with Vanessa the entire time.””
My heart shattered.
Then Michael pulled a second photograph from his pocket.
He handed it to me.
The date was that afternoon.
Hours before I had been thrown out of Jared's house.
The photograph showed Jared and Vanessa standing together.
And in Vanessa's hand was a folder.
On the front of it were two words.
NORTHERN RIDGE.
I stared at it.
Michael whispered,
“Your son didn't lose control.””
“He delivered you to them.””
And somewhere behind us, far above the dark water, Jared raised his phone.
Then my phone rang.
One new message appeared.
COME HOME, MOM.
May you like
I looked at the words.
And realized I had no idea which home he meant.
