Chapter 13: The Person Who Was Always There
The silence after Detective Bennett spoke felt endless.
I could hear the hospital machines.
I could hear Noah breathing.
I could hear Hannah's fingers moving against the blanket.
But I couldn't hear the rest of the sentence.
Not yet.
Because some part of me already knew.
Some part of me was trying to protect myself from hearing a name I wasn't ready to accept.
"Daniel?""
Detective Bennett's voice came through the phone.
"Are you still there?""
I swallowed.
"Say it.""
A pause.
Then:
"Laura believes the person connected to Mercer is Diane Carter.""
My mother's name.
Again.
The words should not have surprised me.
After everything.
The hospital.
The records.
The appointments.
The lies.
The evidence.
But somehow, hearing someone else say it felt different.
Because this time, it wasn't suspicion.
It was a person who had lived through the same nightmare.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Hannah looked at me.
"What happened?""
I couldn't answer.
She saw my face.
"Daniel.""
I finally spoke.
"Laura thinks my mother was involved.""
Hannah closed her eyes.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then she whispered:
"I was afraid of that.""
I looked at her.
"You thought she was?""
"Not exactly.""
"Then what?""
Hannah looked toward Noah.
"I thought she knew more than she admitted.""
That was the hardest part.
Not that my mother had made mistakes.
Not that she had been manipulated.
But that everyone around me seemed to know pieces of my life before I did.
My own family had become a mystery.
I stood up.
"I need to talk to her.""
Hannah grabbed my hand.
"Daniel.""
I looked back.
"What?""
"Be careful.""
I nodded.
Because now I understood something.
The truth could hurt.
But the wrong person knowing you were searching for it could be dangerous.
My mother was sitting in the waiting area outside the maternity ward.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Smaller.
For the first time, I didn't see the woman who raised me.
I saw someone who was afraid of what she had done.
She looked up when I approached.
"You know.""
It wasn't a question.
I stopped.
"Detective Bennett talked to me.""
My mother's face changed.
"What did she say?""
"She said Laura Bennett believes you were connected to Mercer.""
My mother closed her eyes.
"I knew this would happen.""
"What does that mean?""
She didn't answer.
"Mom.""
"I knew eventually everyone would think I was the monster.""
My anger rose.
"Are you?""
She looked at me.
The question hurt.
I saw that.
But I needed to ask.
"Did you help Mercer?""
My mother looked away.
"I helped him.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
Even though I had suspected.
Even though I knew.
Hearing her admit it was different.
"What did you help him do?""
She took a shaky breath.
"I helped him get access.""
"To what?""
"Your family.""
I stared.
"Explain.""
"He told me he needed information.""
"What information?""
"Medical history.""
"Why?""
"He said there were risks.""
"Risks to who?""
She looked toward the hallway.
"Noah.""
I shook my head.
"You keep saying that.""
"Because I believed it.""
"But you don't anymore.""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"I don't.""
I sat down across from her.
"Then tell me the truth.""
She nodded.
"I met Mercer years ago.""
I frowned.
"Years?""
"Before Hannah.""
That surprised me.
"Why?""
"He helped your father.""
My heart stopped.
"My father?""
"Yes.""
"What does that mean?""
My mother looked down.
"When your father got sick, we searched for answers everywhere.""
I remembered.
The hospitals.
The appointments.
The endless hope.
"He was one of the doctors we consulted.""
I felt cold.
"Mercer knew Dad?""
"Yes.""
"And you trusted him because of that.""
"Yes.""
Everything shifted.
This wasn't about Noah.
Not originally.
It started years ago.
With my father.
"What happened?""
My mother looked away.
"Your father died believing the doctors had done everything possible.""
"And?""
She swallowed.
"But I always wondered.""
"About what?""
"Whether we were told the whole truth.""
I stared.
"So Mercer used that.""
"Yes.""
"He knew you were looking for answers.""
"Yes.""
"He knew you were afraid.""
"Yes.""
"And he used that fear to control you.""
My mother nodded.
"I thought he was the only person who understood what I had been through.""
I shook my head.
"He wasn't helping you.""
"I know.""
"He was using your pain.""
"I know.""
The honesty almost made me angrier.
Because she understood now.
But only after Hannah nearly died.
Only after Noah was endangered.
Only after everything fell apart.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was ashamed.""
I looked at her.
"Shame doesn't explain what you did.""
"I know.""
"Mom...""
"I thought if I admitted I was wrong, I would lose you.""
I looked away.
"You almost did.""
"I know.""
The two words followed us everywhere.
I know.
I know.
I know.
But knowing wasn't enough.
Not anymore.
"What was Mercer trying to prove?""
My mother hesitated.
"I don't know.""
"Think.""
"I don't know.""
"Then why Noah?""
She looked toward the nursery.
"Because he said Noah was the beginning.""
My stomach tightened.
"The beginning of what?""
"I don't know.""
Again.
But this time, I believed her.
Because she looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
Detective Bennett arrived twenty minutes later.
She had an update.
"Laura agreed to meet.""
I stood.
"Where?""
"At a private location.""
"Why not here?""
"She doesn't trust hospitals.""
Nobody could blame her.
"Who is coming?""
"Just us.""
I looked at my mother.
"Not her.""
My mother nodded.
"I understand.""
But before we left, my mother stopped me.
"Daniel.""
I turned.
She looked at me.
"I need you to know something.""
"What?""
"Whatever happens...""
She took a breath.
"Don't let Mercer make you hate people who were manipulated.""
I stared at her.
"Are you saying forgive you?""
"No.""
That surprised me.
"I'm saying don't let him turn you into someone who only sees enemies.""
I didn't answer.
Because despite everything...
That was the first thing she had said that sounded like my mother again.
Not the woman Mercer created.
The person underneath.
The meeting with Laura happened in a small coffee shop outside the city.
No dramatic location.
No abandoned building.
No secrets hidden in the dark.
Just a woman sitting alone near the window.
When she saw me, she immediately looked away.
Detective Bennett introduced us.
"Laura, this is Daniel Carter.""
Laura looked at me.
Her eyes were tired.
Not angry.
Just tired.
"You have a baby.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
She looked down.
"Then you understand.""
"Understand what?""
"What it feels like when someone makes you question something you know.""
I sat across from her.
"Tell me what happened.""
She looked at Detective Bennett.
Then back at me.
"How much do you know?""
"Not enough.""
A small sad smile crossed her face.
"Nobody ever knows enough.""
She took a breath.
"Mercer found me when I was vulnerable.""
"Like my mother.""
Laura looked surprised.
"Your mother?""
"She was involved.""
Laura closed her eyes.
"Then he did it again.""
"What?""
"He found another person who wanted to protect a child.""
I leaned forward.
"What did he tell you?""
"That my baby's records had problems.""
"What problems?""
"He said the father information was suspicious.""
My stomach tightened.
"The same thing?""
"Yes.""
"Did you believe him?""
"At first, no.""
"What changed?""
Laura looked out the window.
"He showed me documents.""
"Real documents?""
"I thought they were.""
I understood immediately.
The records.
The changes.
The lies.
"What happened after?""
"He convinced me to test everything.""
"And?""
"The results showed something impossible.""
"What?""
She looked at me.
"That my baby's father was not who I believed.""
Silence.
"What did you do?""
"I left.""
"Why?""
"Because I thought everyone had lied to me.""
"And later?""
"I discovered the results had been altered.""
My chest tightened.
"How?""
"Someone contacted me.""
"Who?""
Laura hesitated.
"Dr. Amelia Ross.""
The same name.
Again.
"What did she tell you?""
"That Mercer had done this before.""
"How many times?""
Laura looked at me.
"I don't know.""
Then she whispered:
"But Noah wasn't his first.""
I felt cold.
"Why Noah?""
Laura looked at me.
"Because Mercer needed someone new.""
"Someone new for what?""
She stared at me.
"To prove he could still control people.""
The answer was worse than I expected.
This wasn't medicine.
This wasn't protection.
This wasn't concern.
It was power.
Before I could ask another question, Laura reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
"I kept this.""
"What is it?""
"The thing Mercer never knew I had.""
She handed it to me.
Inside was a document.
An original genetic report.
Not altered.
Not changed.
Real.
I looked at the name.
The patient.
The date.
Then I saw something that made my blood freeze.
The report wasn't about Laura's child.
It was about Noah.
My son.
My hands started shaking.
"How did you get this?""
Laura looked at me.
"Because before Mercer started manipulating your family...""
She paused.
"He was already preparing for Noah's birth.""
I stared at the document.
A date.
A date from months before Noah was born.
Someone had planned this.
Before the delivery.
Before the complications.
Before my trip.
Before everything.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Mercer.
Only one sentence.
*You finally found the first piece.*
Then another.
*Now ask yourself why Dr. Ross gave it to Laura instead of you.*
I looked up.
Because suddenly I understood.
Even when we found answers...
Mercer was already waiting.
He wasn't afraid of us discovering the truth.
He was prepared for it.
May you like
And that meant one terrifying possibility.
He wanted us to find it.
