Chapter 12: The First Family

The address on the back of the photograph felt heavier than a simple location.

It wasn't just a place.

It was a doorway.

A doorway into everything we didn't know.

I stared at the picture in my hand.

A baby.

A woman holding that baby.

A doctor standing beside them.

A moment that looked ordinary.

Almost happy.

Until you looked closer.

Until you realized someone had saved that photograph for a reason.

"Daniel?""

Hannah's voice brought me back.

I looked at her.

"What is it?""

I handed her the picture.

She studied it.

Then looked at the back.

Her face changed.

"Another family.""

I nodded.

My mother moved closer.

When she saw the photograph, all the color left her face.

"You know them.""

It wasn't a question.

My mother didn't answer.

That was enough.

"Mom.""

She looked away.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

"Who are they?""

My mother's hands started shaking.

"I don't know everything.""

I almost laughed.

Nobody in this nightmare knew everything.

Everyone just knew enough to hurt us.

"Tell me what you know.""

She sat down.

"The woman's name was Laura Bennett.""

My stomach tightened.

"She was a patient of Mercer's?""

"Yes.""

"And the baby?""

"My son.""

I froze.

"No.""

My mother looked at me.

"Not my son.""

She pointed at the picture.

"Her son.""

I exhaled.

For a second, I thought she meant something impossible.

Something connected to me.

But no.

This was another story.

Another family.

Another child.

"Who was the father?""

My mother looked down.

"I don't know.""

Hannah looked confused.

"Why would Mercer care about them?""

My mother didn't answer.

I did.

"Because he found a way to create doubt.""

Everyone looked at me.

"That's what he does.""

I held the photograph.

"He finds something people are afraid of.""

Then I looked at my mother.

"And he uses it.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

"Tell us everything.""

She was quiet.

Then she began.

"Laura came to Mercer when she was pregnant," my mother said.

"She was young.""

"How young?""

"Twenty-four.""

Hannah listened carefully.

"What happened?""

"Mercer told her there were concerns with the pregnancy.""

"What concerns?""

"My mother shook her head.

"He never gave specific answers.""

The same pattern.

Always vague.

Always enough fear.

"He told her that the baby's medical information didn't make sense.""

"Meaning?""

"That something didn't match.""

I looked at Hannah.

"Like Noah.""

She nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

My mother continued.

"He convinced Laura that someone had hidden information from her.""

"Who?""

"The father.""

I felt sick.

"So he turned her against him.""

"Yes.""

"Then what?""

"He convinced her to run tests.""

"What kind?""

"Genetic tests.""

The room became quiet.

"But the results...""

My mother swallowed.

"Changed.""

Hannah whispered:

"He changed the results?""

"We don't know for certain.""

"But you suspect.""

My mother nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Did Laura ever find out?""

My mother looked at me.

"Yes.""

"What happened?""

"She disappeared.""

My chest tightened.

"Disappeared?""

"She left town.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed everyone had betrayed her.""

I felt anger rising.

"Because of Mercer.""

My mother didn't respond.

She didn't need to.

"Where is she now?""

"I don't know.""

"How do you know all this?""

Another silence.

Then my mother said:

"Because I met her.""

Hannah looked surprised.

"When?""

"Before Noah was born.""

I stared.

"You knew her?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"Mercer introduced us.""

The room went cold.

"Why?""

"He told me she needed support.""

I shook my head.

"Support?""

My voice became sharper.

"He introduced you to another woman whose life he was destroying?""

My mother looked down.

"I didn't know.""

"But you should have.""

She accepted that.

"I should have.""

For the first time, I saw my mother without excuses.

Not the woman who always had an explanation.

Just someone who realized she had helped create a disaster.

"What happened after you met Laura?""

My mother looked at the photograph.

"She trusted me.""

That hurt.

"Why?""

"Because she thought I understood.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

Her voice cracked.

"I thought I was helping her.""

"Helping her do what?""

"Find the truth.""

"And?""

"I helped Mercer convince her there was a problem.""

The confession sat in the room.

Heavy.

Hannah looked away.

I couldn't blame her.

My mother had become part of the machine.

Even if she didn't understand it.

"Why are you telling us now?""

My mother looked at Noah.

"Because when I saw Hannah on the floor...""

She stopped.

"I realized I had become the kind of person I was afraid of.""

Nobody spoke.

Detective Bennett arrived twenty minutes later.

I showed her the photograph.

Her expression changed immediately.

"Where did you get this?""

"Someone left it.""

"Who?""

"We don't know.""

She examined the picture.

"Do you recognize this woman?""

She nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"You know her?""

"Laura Bennett.""

My heart stopped.

"You've heard of her?""

Detective Bennett placed the photograph down.

"Yes.""

"What happened to her?""

She hesitated.

"Officially?""

"What does that mean?""

"Officially, she moved away.""

"And unofficially?""

Detective Bennett looked at us.

"There were concerns about how her case was handled.""

"What concerns?""

"Medical records.""

Again.

Always records.

"What kind?""

"Missing information. Conflicting information.""

I leaned forward.

"About the baby?""

"Yes.""

"What happened to the child?""

She was quiet.

"I don't know.""

That answer bothered me.

Not because she was hiding something.

Because she truly didn't know.

"Can you find her?""

"We can try.""

"Try harder.""

She looked at me.

"I understand.""

"No.""

My voice lowered.

"You don't.""

I pointed toward Noah.

"My son almost died because people were playing games with information.""

I looked around the room.

"My wife almost died.""

My eyes landed on my mother.

"People I trusted were manipulated.""

Then back to Detective Bennett.

"I need answers.""

She nodded.

"We'll find Laura.""

That evening, Hannah and I sat together.

For the first time in days, nobody was shouting.

Nobody was threatening us.

Nobody was lying.

At least not in that moment.

But the silence felt strange.

"Hannah.""

"Yes?""

"Do you regret anything?""

She looked at me.

"About what?""

"Not telling me about Mercer earlier.""

She was quiet.

Then:

"Yes.""

I nodded.

"I understand.""

"But I don't regret protecting Noah.""

I looked at her.

"I know.""

"I was scared.""

"I know.""

"I thought if I could handle it myself...""

"You couldn't.""

She smiled sadly.

"No.""

I held her hand.

"Neither could I.""

She looked at me.

"What do you mean?""

"I thought being a husband meant having all the answers.""

"And now?""

"Now I know it means staying when there are no answers.""

She squeezed my hand.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then Noah started crying.

We both looked toward him.

A simple sound.

A normal sound.

But after everything, it felt like a reminder.

This was what mattered.

Not the lies.

Not the people who tried to control us.

Him.

Our family.

Later that night, Detective Bennett called.

"Daniel.""

Her voice was serious.

"What happened?""

"We found Laura Bennett.""

My heart jumped.

"Where?""

"Alive.""

I exhaled.

"Thank God.""

"But there's a problem.""

"What?""

"She doesn't want to talk.""

"Why?""

"Because she says everyone who tried to uncover the truth ended up worse.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can you convince her?""

"We're trying.""

"What did she say?""

Detective Bennett paused.

Then:

"She said Mercer isn't the person you should be afraid of.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"She said he is only the person who carries out someone else's plan.""

I looked at Hannah.

She noticed my expression.

"What is it?""

I ignored her for a second.

"Who does she say is behind it?""

Detective Bennett was silent.

Then she said:

"She gave us a name.""

My grip tightened.

"Who?""

A pause.

Then:

"Someone you know.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who?""

Detective Bennett lowered her voice.

"She says the person controlling Mercer is...""

The line crackled.

Then the answer came.

A name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made my entire body go numb.

Because it wasn't Mercer.

It wasn't my mother.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone who had been beside my family from the beginning.

Someone who had held Noah.

Someone who had smiled in our home.

Someone I had trusted.

I looked at Hannah.

And before Detective Bennett even finished explaining, I already knew.

May you like

Our nightmare had never been about finding the person behind the lies.

It was about discovering that person had been standing in front of us the entire time.
