Chapter 8: The Wedding They Expected Me to Finance
Saturday morning arrived with a bright blue sky.
At 8:00 a.m., I was sitting in my apartment wearing sweatpants and an old gray T-shirt.
My brother was getting married in six hours.
I wasn't invited.
I wasn't expected.
And, for the first time in months, I wasn't paying for anything.
I made coffee, opened my laptop, and checked my email.
There was a message from Rebecca confirming that formal notices had been sent to Northbridge Capital and the relevant vendors.
The disputed loan application remained on hold.
The venue had also confirmed that no additional charges would be accepted under my name without direct authorization.
I should have felt relieved.
Instead, I felt strangely empty.
I had spent months imagining this day.
I had pictured my brother standing at the altar, my mother crying, my father smiling, and the entire family gathering for photographs.
I had even imagined giving a toast.
I had written a few lines on my phone.
Nothing extravagant.
Just a story about two brothers growing up together.
I deleted the draft.
At 9:30, my cousin Kevin called.
I answered because I wanted to hear what he had to say.
"Daniel, are you coming?""
"No.""
"Come on, man. It's wedding day.""
"Ryan told me I'm not invited.""
Kevin laughed awkwardly.
"That was just anger talking.""
"Was it?""
"Look, everyone is stressed. You know how weddings get.""
I walked to the window.
"Kevin, did you know they were trying to put a $400,000 loan in my name?""
Silence.
"What?""
I repeated the question.
"Did you know?""
"No. What are you talking about?""
I explained briefly.
Kevin didn't interrupt.
When I finished, he said, "That's crazy.""
"Yes.""
"Are you sure?""
I looked at the documents on my desk.
"I have the application.""
He exhaled.
"Wow.""
Then, after a few seconds, he added, "Still, maybe today isn't the day to bring this up.""
I closed my eyes.
"That's exactly what everyone keeps saying.""
Kevin sighed.
"Just don't make a scene.""
I ended the call.
At 10:45, Madison sent me a message.
"Are you awake?""
I replied.
"Yes.""
"Can I call you?""
"Of course.""
She called immediately.
Her voice sounded exhausted.
"I haven't slept.""
"What's happening?""
"Ryan is furious. My father is telling everyone there's a misunderstanding. Your mother keeps asking me to convince you to come.""
"Why?""
"Because they want a family photograph.""
I stared at the coffee mug in my hand.
"A family photograph?""
"Yes. My father says it would look strange if your side of the family had no older brother present.""
I almost laughed.
"They don't want me at the wedding, but they want my face in the photograph.""
Madison didn't laugh.
"I'm sorry.""
I believed her.
She sounded genuinely upset.
"Daniel, I need to ask you something.""
"Go ahead.""
"Did you really never agree to invest in the property?""
"No.""
"Not even verbally?""
"No.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Ryan told me you had promised your father months ago.""
I looked at the ceiling.
"Madison, I rejected that property before your engagement. I told my father it was a terrible investment.""
She was silent.
"Why would Ryan tell you otherwise?""
"I don't know.""
Then she whispered, "I think I know.""
I waited.
"Last night, I overheard Ryan talking to your father. He said once the wedding was over, you would have no choice but to cooperate because the company would already have the property under contract.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Did he say how?""
"No. But he sounded confident.""
I glanced at Rebecca's email.
"Madison, please don't sign anything today. Not financial documents, not business agreements, nothing.""
"I won't.""
"Are you safe?""
"Yes. I'm just confused.""
She paused.
Then she said, "I wish I had asked more questions before all this.""
I didn't know what to say.
After the call, I received a notification from the wedding venue.
The final guest list had been updated.
I opened the attachment.
There were 186 guests.
My name wasn't anywhere.
But at the bottom, under special attendees, I saw:
*Daniel Carter — Family Investment Representative.*
I stared at it.
They had removed me from the guest list but added me to the business program.
I forwarded the document to Rebecca.
She replied:
"Do not attend or participate in any activity you have not authorized. Keep the document.""
At 12:20 p.m., my father called.
I answered.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"Home.""
"Good. Listen carefully. We need you at the venue by two.""
"No.""
He ignored me.
"Gregory has arranged a private meeting before the ceremony. We need to finalize the investment documents.""
"I've already told you I won't sign.""
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Then let me make it.""
He lowered his voice.
"Your mother is devastated. Your brother is under enormous pressure. You can fix all of this with one conversation.""
"Why don't you ask Ryan to apologize?""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"Why doesn't he send me a message saying he shouldn't have called me a loser?""
My father became irritated.
"Are we really going to discuss childish insults on his wedding day?""
I laughed.
"Apparently, the $600,000 loan isn't childish.""
He went quiet.
Then he said, "You don't understand what you're interfering with.""
I stared at the phone.
"That's what I'm beginning to understand, Dad.""
I ended the call.
At 1:05 p.m., Rebecca contacted me.
"Daniel, we received an update from Northbridge.""
"What happened?""
"The lender received another document this morning. Someone attempted to replace the disputed guarantee with a revised authorization.""
My stomach tightened.
"Under my name?""
"Yes. The document contains a different signature image, but the same false contact information.""
"Can they release the loan?""
"Not while the application is on hold. We have reiterated the dispute.""
I walked toward the window.
"Who submitted it?""
"The lender hasn't confirmed the identity of the person who uploaded it.""
Then Rebecca added:
"However, the document includes a reference to today's wedding ceremony as the date of final authorization.""
I felt sick.
They were still planning to use the wedding as leverage.
At 1:30, my phone began buzzing with messages from relatives.
My aunt Linda:
"Your mother is crying. Please don't do this to her.""
Kevin:
"Bro, Ryan says you're trying to destroy the business. What's going on?""
Another cousin:
"Can't you two settle this after the honeymoon?""
Then a photograph arrived from my mother.
It showed the wedding venue.
The courtyard was decorated with white roses, candles, and an enormous floral arch.
At the front stood Ryan in a tailored black suit.
Madison was beside him in a white dress.
They looked beautiful.
For a moment, I felt the familiar sadness return.
That should have been a happy day.
Then I noticed something behind them.
A large display board.
It read:
*THE CARTER-MILLER LEGACY PROJECT*
Underneath were photographs of the commercial property.
And there, in gold lettering, were the names of the supposed founding partners.
Robert Carter.
Gregory Miller.
Ryan Carter.
Daniel Carter.
I zoomed in.
My name was directly beneath the heading:
*Founding Investor — $250,000 Commitment.*
My mother had sent the photograph with a message.
"Your father says everything will be fine once you come.""
I put the phone down.
Then I picked it up again.
I called her.
"Mom, who approved that display board?""
She sounded confused.
"What board?""
"The one showing me as a founding investor.""
"Oh, that. Your father said it was part of the presentation.""
"Did you tell him I never agreed to invest?""
She sighed.
"Daniel, I don't know anything about business.""
"Then why are you allowing them to use my name?""
"Please don't start again.""
I closed my eyes.
"Mom, listen to me. I never agreed to invest $250,000. I never guaranteed a $400,000 loan.
I never approved a $600,000 loan. And I am not going to sign anything today.""
She whispered, "But the guests are already arriving.""
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
"Then perhaps they should enjoy the wedding.""
I ended the call.
At 2:15, I received a message from Madison.
"Daniel, something is happening. My father just told Ryan that the investment presentation is ready.""
I replied immediately.
"Don't sign anything.""
She answered:
"I won't.""
Then she sent another message.
"Ryan just told the wedding planner to prepare a second envelope for you.""
"What envelope?""
"I don't know. He said it contains the document you need to sign before the ceremony.""
I stared at the screen.
A second envelope?
Before I could ask another question, a photograph appeared.
It showed a cream-colored envelope sitting on the head table.
My name was written across the front.
Daniel Carter.
Underneath, someone had written:
*FINAL FAMILY AGREEMENT.*
I enlarged the photograph.
A small label had been attached to the bottom.
"To be opened in front of witnesses.""
My phone rang.
It was Ryan.
I answered.
"Why are you sending documents with my name on them?""
His voice sounded cheerful, almost theatrical.
"Because I want to end this nonsense.""
"What nonsense?""
"All this fighting. Come to the wedding. We'll put everything behind us.""
"I'm not invited.""
"You're my brother. Of course you're invited.""
I looked at the original message still saved on my phone.
"That's interesting. You called me a loser and told me goodbye.""
Ryan laughed.
"Come on. Don't be dramatic.""
"What is in the envelope?""
"Just something that will fix everything.""
"Is it another investment agreement?""
He paused.
Then he said, "You'll see.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Ryan, I'm not signing anything.""
"Nobody said you had to.""
"Then why is my name on it?""
He lowered his voice.
"Because, Daniel, once everyone sees what you've been hiding, you'll understand why you need us.""
The call ended.
I sat motionless.
What had I been hiding?
I hadn't hidden anything.
Unless they had created something that made it look as though I had.
I immediately forwarded the photograph and call details to Rebecca.
She called me back.
"Daniel, don't go there without legal advice. And absolutely do not sign or acknowledge anything in that envelope.""
"I wasn't planning to.""
"Good.""
At 3:05 p.m., the ceremony began.
I knew because my cousin posted a photograph in the family group chat.
Ryan stood beneath the floral arch.
Madison walked toward him.
Everyone was smiling.
My mother was crying.
My father stood proudly in the front row.
For a brief moment, I watched the photograph and wondered how two people who had grown up in the same house could end up so far apart.
Then a new message appeared.
It was from Madison.
"Daniel, please call me.""
I called immediately.
She was whispering.
"The envelope is not an investment agreement.""
"What is it?""
"It's a statement claiming you voluntarily withdrew money from a family trust and used it to pay for the wedding.""
I sat upright.
"What?""
"Your father just told everyone that you had taken money that belonged to the family and that the wedding payments were supposed to be your way of making things right.""
My hands went cold.
I looked at Rebecca's number.
May you like
Before I could call her, Madison whispered something else.
"Daniel, they're about to read it aloud.""
