Chapter 11: The Company Behind the Wedding

Madison sounded terrified.

I could hear a door closing somewhere in the background.

"Daniel, I need you to promise me something.""

"What?""

"Don't tell Ryan where I am.""

"I won't.""

"And don't tell my father.""

"Madison, I need to know what you found.""

She took a breath.

"Ryan has another company. It's called Miller Carter Ventures.""

Rebecca immediately opened her laptop.

"Is your father involved?"" she asked.

"Yes. He's listed as a director. Ryan handles operations.""

"Does your father know you're speaking with Daniel?""

"I don't think so.""

Rebecca gestured for me to continue.

"Madison, how did you find the company?""

"I was looking for the original investment agreement. Ryan had another folder hidden inside a filing cabinet. It contained bank statements, loan correspondence, and a list of properties.""

"Can you send copies?""

"Yes. I photographed everything before I left.""

A moment later, my phone received a series of images.

The first showed a company registration document.

The second showed a spreadsheet.

The third showed a bank statement.

I opened the spreadsheet.

It contained a list of liabilities.

Northbridge Capital: $400,000 proposed loan.

Private lender: $180,000.

Contractor debt: $95,000.

Property taxes and maintenance: $42,000.

I added the figures.

More than $700,000.

My brother and Gregory had been attempting to secure financing for a company that was already buried in debt.

I looked at Rebecca.

She was studying the documents.

"Daniel, these records need to be authenticated. We shouldn't assume every figure is accurate, but they are important leads.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed another entry.

A transfer of $35,000.

The date was two months earlier.

The recipient was listed as Robert Carter.

My father.

"What is this payment?""

Madison answered.

"Ryan told me it was repayment for a personal loan.""

I frowned.

"Did my father lend him money?""

"That's what I was told.""

Rebecca examined the statement.

"There's no description beyond 'consulting advance.''"

I scrolled further.

Another payment.

$18,500.

Recipient: Gregory Miller.

Another.

$12,000.

Recipient: Robert Carter.

The money was moving between the company and my family.

But nobody had ever told me about any of it.

"Madison," I asked, "did you know the company was in financial trouble before the wedding?""

She began crying.

"I knew there were some problems. Ryan told me he had a few outstanding business expenses. He said your investment would help everything move forward.""

"Did he tell you about the $700,000 in liabilities?""

"No.""

"Did your father?""

"No.""

There was a long silence.

Then she said, "I think my father has been helping Ryan hide the debts.""

Rebecca leaned toward the phone.

"Madison, do you have access to the original files?""

"Not anymore. Ryan changed the office lock code after I left.""

"Do you have any copies stored elsewhere?""

"Some are in my email. Others are in a cloud folder.""

"Please don't delete or modify anything. We'll arrange a secure way to preserve them.""

Madison agreed.

After the call ended, Rebecca opened the company registration records.

Miller Carter Ventures had been incorporated eleven months earlier.

Its registered address was Gregory's office.

Its directors were Gregory Miller and Ryan Carter.

The company had also registered a second business name: Carver Ridge Holdings.

I stared at the screen.

"They're the same people behind both companies.""

"Apparently," Rebecca said.

"We'll need a corporate records review to understand their relationship.""

Then she opened the lender correspondence.

There was a letter from Northbridge Capital addressed to Carver Ridge Holdings.

It referred to a proposed $400,000 loan.

Another document referenced a separate $600,000 facility.

But the most disturbing attachment was a projected cash-flow statement.

The first planned use of funds was:

*Repayment of existing private obligations.*

Not renovations.

Not property improvements.

Not purchasing new equipment.

Repaying old debts.

I leaned back.

"So the property was just the excuse.""

"It may have been part of the proposed arrangement," Rebecca replied.

"But we need the complete records before reaching a conclusion.""

At noon, she contacted Northbridge Capital again.

She formally disputed the personal guarantee and requested preservation of the application materials.

She also asked whether the lender had any record of my direct consent.

Andrew Collins called back twenty minutes later.

"Mr. Carter, we have reviewed the information submitted with the application.""

"And?""

"We cannot confirm that the guarantee was executed by you.""

"Has any money been released?""

"No.""

I let out a breath.

"Thank you.""

Andrew continued.

"However, the company has made repeated requests for an expedited decision. The most recent request was submitted yesterday.""

"By whom?""

"Mr. Robert Carter.""

I looked at Rebecca.

"Did he provide additional documents?""

"Yes. A family financial declaration and a statement claiming that you had already committed to the project.""

I closed my eyes.

"Please send those documents to my attorney.""

"Certainly.""

After the call, Rebecca sat back.

"Daniel, we need to consider notifying the appropriate authorities about the disputed guarantee and the apparent use of your identity.""

"Do it.""

She nodded.

Then she said, "I also want you to stop speaking directly with your father and brother about this matter.""

I agreed.

But at 1:35 p.m., my father called.

I declined.

He called again.

I declined again.

Then a text appeared.

"Daniel, your grandfather's letter is being misunderstood. Call me immediately.""

I stared at it.

A second message followed.

"Elaine had no right to show you private family documents.""

I forwarded both messages to Rebecca.

She replied:

"Don't respond.""

Five minutes later, Ryan sent me a voice message.

I almost deleted it.

Then I decided to listen.

"Daniel, I know you're angry, but you're making this impossible. Dad says you've seen the old letter. Fine.

Grandpa wrote that years ago. He didn't understand how complicated things have become.""

Ryan paused.

Then he continued.

"Look, the company needs help. That's all. The property is a good opportunity, and everyone has money tied up in it. If the lender pulls out, we're all screwed.""

I listened again.

Everyone has money tied up in it.

Not everyone.

I had no money in it.

Not one dollar.

Ryan continued.

"You've got savings. You've got investments. You can handle this.

We can't. That's why Dad thought you'd help.""

I deleted the message only after forwarding it to Rebecca.

At 3:00 p.m., Madison called again.

"I need to tell you something about the wedding.""

"Go ahead.""

"Ryan told me he was going to cancel the ceremony if you didn't agree to the investment.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He said the wedding expenses were already tied to the company. He said if the investment didn't happen, everything would collapse.""

I stared at the floor.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""

"I thought he was exaggerating. Then I found the financial documents.""

She took a shaky breath.

"I also found a list of people who were supposed to attend the private reception.""

"Who?""

"Your father. My father. Ryan.

A few business associates. And you.""

I remembered the guest list.

I remembered the banner.

The supposed family investment reception.

"Did anyone else know about the loan?""

"My father knew. I'm certain of it.""

"How?""

"Because I found an email from him to Ryan. It said the lender was waiting for your guarantee.""

She sent the screenshot.

I opened it.

Gregory had written:

"Make sure Daniel is present after the ceremony. We need his signature before Monday. Don't let him leave without completing the paperwork.""

My stomach turned.

They had planned to corner me at my brother's wedding.

They wanted me surrounded by relatives, guests, and witnesses.

They wanted me embarrassed enough to sign whatever they put in front of me.

I forwarded the email to Rebecca.

She read it and shook her head.

"This is another reason not to attend.""

"I wasn't planning to.""

At 5:15 p.m., my mother called.

I answered because I wanted to hear what she knew.

"Daniel, your father says you have been speaking with Madison.""

"Yes.""

"She's upset. She's confused.""

"She's found documents showing the companies are in debt.""

My mother sighed.

"Business can be difficult.""

"Did you know Dad and Ryan were trying to get me to guarantee a $400,000 loan?""

Silence.

Then she whispered, "Your father said it was temporary.""

I closed my eyes.

"Mom, do you know what a personal guarantee means?""

"Not exactly.""

"It means if the company doesn't repay the money, the lender can pursue me.""

She began crying.

"Your father said it would never come to that.""

"Then why didn't he guarantee the loan himself?""

She didn't answer.

I continued.

"Why didn't Ryan?""

"Daniel, please.""

"Why was I the only person expected to take the risk?""

My mother whispered, "Because you're the one who can afford it.""

I felt something inside me break.

Not because she had said it.

Because she had said it so naturally.

As if my ability to pay made my consent unnecessary.

I ended the call.

That evening, Rebecca received a new set of documents from Northbridge Capital.

One of them was a communication log.

It showed that the lender had repeatedly requested direct confirmation from the proposed guarantor.

Each time, someone had responded on my behalf.

The responses were sent from a newly created email account using my full name.

I stared at the address.

It looked almost identical to my old email.

Only one character was different.

Rebecca pointed to the timestamps.

"These messages were sent while you were working in your office.""

"Yes.""

"Do you recognize the recovery phone number?""

I checked the number.

It belonged to my brother.

I sat very still.

Then another document opened.

It was a scanned copy of a text message supposedly sent by me.

It read:

"I authorize my father, Robert Carter, to handle all financing matters related to Carver Ridge Holdings. I trust him to act in my best financial interests.""

Below it was my name.

My brother hadn't just copied my signature.

He had created an entire communication history pretending to be me.

Rebecca closed the file.

"Daniel, we need to act quickly.""

"What's next?""

She looked directly at me.

"We need to establish who controlled that email account and how they obtained your personal information.""

Before I could respond, Madison sent one final photograph.

It showed a printed message from Ryan.

The message was dated two weeks before the wedding.

May you like

And it contained a sentence that made me realize how carefully everything had been planned.

"Once Daniel is publicly committed as a founding partner, he won't be able to walk away without admitting he lied to the entire family.""
