Chapter 15: Eleven Days to Lose Everything

I returned to Thomas Ridge Estate with the original will locked inside Arthur's briefcase.

For the first time since my husband's death, I felt that I finally possessed something more valuable than money.

The truth.

But the truth had consequences.

And those consequences were about to reach my son's front door.

Arthur spent the following morning reviewing the original will.

He confirmed that the document was valid and that the altered version prepared by Elaine could not legally replace it.

The police also began examining the forged medical authorization and the attempted property transfer.

Richard Whitmore was released pending further investigation, but his company was now under scrutiny.

Elaine agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration in her own case.

She also surrendered several additional documents.

Among them was a record of payments made to Jared.

I was sitting in the underground office when Margaret placed the report in front of me.

“There's something you need to see.””

I looked down.

The document showed a series of transfers over eighteen months.

The first was $150,000.

The second was $225,000.

Then $400,000.

There were eleven payments in total.

I looked up.

“How much?””

Margaret answered quietly.

“Approximately two million dollars.””

I closed my eyes.

“From Richard?””

“Yes.””

“What was Jared being paid for?””

Margaret pointed to the descriptions.

Consulting fees.

Property acquisition services.

Development coordination.

None of them matched Jared's actual business activities.

I shook my head.

“He was being paid to help Richard take the land.””

Margaret nodded.

“That's what the records suggest.””

I sat back.

For a moment, I remembered Jared as a little boy.

He used to bring home drawings of houses and tell me he wanted to build places where people could be happy.

Thomas would put those drawings on the refrigerator.

He used to say our son had a good heart.

I wondered when that heart had become so difficult to recognize.

My phone rang.

Jared.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Mom, I need to see you.””

His voice sounded different.

Less confident.

More urgent.

“Why?””

“Because I know you found the original will.””

I glanced at Arthur.

“How do you know?””

“Richard called me.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course he did.””

Jared continued.

“Mom, we need to talk about the penthouse.””

“What about it?””

“Dad put conditions on the inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

I almost laughed.

“Perhaps because you never asked.””

“Mom, I'm serious. Vanessa is furious.””

I looked at the clock.

“Your wife has eleven days.””

“That's exactly the problem!””

His voice rose.

“Richard says if I don't resolve this, the entire deal collapses.””

“What deal?””

“The financing. The resort. My company. Everything.””

I leaned forward.

“Then tell the truth.””

Silence.

“Mom, you don't understand. If I cooperate with the investigation, Richard will destroy me.””

“If you don't, your father’s estate will protect itself.””

“I'm your son!””

I closed my eyes.

“And I was your mother when you threw me out of your house.””

He stopped speaking.

For several seconds, I heard only his breathing.

Then he said, “Vanessa didn't mean it like that.””

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

“She told me I was a stinking old woman.””

“Mom…”

“She told me to leave because she wanted a home gym.””

“She's under pressure.””

“So was I. I had just buried my husband.””

Jared didn't answer.

I continued.

“You watched her humiliate me. You didn't defend me. You didn't even help me carry my suitcases.””

His voice became quieter.

“I know.””

“No, Jared. You don't know.””

I looked at Thomas's photograph beside the computer.

“You know what your father said about you in his final letter?””

Jared swallowed.

“What?””

“He said he hoped you would still have time to become the man he believed you could be.””

A long silence followed.

Then Jared whispered, “Can I come to the estate?””

I looked at Margaret.

She gave me a small nod.

“You can come tomorrow. But you won't be discussing a transfer of ownership.””

“Fine.””

“And Jared?””

“Yes?””

“Come alone.””

He hesitated.

“Vanessa won't like that.””

“Then she can stay in Miami.””

I ended the call.

The following afternoon, Jared arrived in a black SUV.

He looked exhausted.

His expensive clothes were wrinkled, and his eyes were red.

He entered the living room and stopped when he saw the large windows overlooking the lake.

For a moment, he seemed overwhelmed.

“Dad really owned all this?””

“Yes.””

Jared walked toward the fireplace.

“He never showed me the whole property.””

“Perhaps he didn't trust you with it.””

He flinched.

I pointed toward the sofa.

“Sit.””

He sat.

Margaret joined us with the original will and a financial report.

Jared stared at the documents.

“Is that the original?””

“Yes,” Margaret replied.

He rubbed his hands together.

“Then I guess there's no point pretending.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me everything.””

He took a long breath.

“Richard approached me about the property two years ago. He said Dad was getting older and would eventually sell.””

“Your father refused.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you continue?””

Jared looked at the floor.

“Because my company was failing.””

He explained that several major contracts had collapsed. His business had accumulated debt, and the investors were demanding repayment.

Richard offered financial assistance.

At first, Jared believed it was a normal business arrangement.

Then Richard began asking questions about Thomas's land.

“He wanted to know whether Dad had transferred the property into a trust,” Jared said.

“And what did you tell him?””

“That I thought the property would eventually come to me.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

“Because I assumed Dad would leave me the business assets and you the house.””

Margaret interrupted.

“Your father had already explained the estate structure to you.””

Jared looked at her.

“He told me he was changing things. He didn't explain everything.””

“Did he tell you about the water rights?””

“No.””

“Did he tell you about the conservation foundation?””

“No.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“Then you never bothered to ask what your father was protecting.””

Jared looked away.

I studied him.

“Did Richard tell you to make me sign the property over?””

He nodded.

“He said you would never understand the business. He told me to convince you that maintaining the estate would be too expensive.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She agreed.””

I waited.

Jared continued.

“She said you would eventually become lonely up here and ask us to take you back.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“So you planned to make me feel unwanted until I gave you the land.””

He nodded.

I looked at my son.

“Do you understand what that means?””

“Yes.””

“Do you understand what your father would have thought?””

Jared's eyes filled.

“Please don't.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

I didn't want to cry in front of him.

After a moment, he spoke again.

“Mom, I can fix this.””

I turned.

“How?””

“I'll cooperate with the investigation. I'll give them the emails and financial records. I'll tell them everything Richard asked me to do.””

Margaret nodded.

“That would be a start.””

Jared looked at the will.

“But I need the penthouse.””

I stared at him.

There it was again.

Even now.

After everything.

He was still thinking about the property.

I sat opposite him.

“Why do you need it?””

“Because it's my home.””

“You have a company. You have investments. You have a career.””

“Not anymore if this goes public.””

I looked at the financial report.

“Your father gave you an opportunity to inherit the penthouse. He asked you to tell the truth. That's all.””

Jared lowered his head.

“I know.””

I reached across the table and placed my hand over his.

He looked surprised.

“Jared, I don't want to destroy your life.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Then help me.””

I gently withdrew my hand.

“I can help you tell the truth. I cannot help you escape the consequences.””

He nodded slowly.

Then Margaret opened the last page of the report.

“There is one more issue.””

Jared looked up.

“What?””

“Your wife has been accessing the estate's financial information.””

His expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret turned the laptop toward him.

A series of unauthorized login attempts appeared on the screen.

The most recent one had occurred that morning.

The account belonged to Vanessa.

Jared stared.

“That's impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Your wife has been trying to access my accounts?””

Margaret nodded.

“And she wasn't just looking at the property valuation.””

She opened another file.

It contained a request to transfer funds from the private beneficiary trust.

The amount was five million dollars.

The intended destination was a company registered in Florida.

I read the company name.

Then I looked at Jared.

He went completely pale.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He stared at the screen.

“That company belongs to Vanessa's father.””

I felt my heart sink.

Margaret enlarged the authorization.

There was a second name listed beneath the company.

*AUTHORIZED SIGNATORY: VANESSA BENNETT.*

I looked at my son.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was loud enough for all of us to hear.

“Jared, where are you? Your father-in-law is here, and he's furious!””

Jared stood.

“What happened?””

“Your mother is trying to ruin everything!””

He looked at me.

“What did you do?””

I stared at him.

“Nothing.””

Vanessa continued shouting.

“Dad says the transfer failed. He says the bank froze the account. Do you understand what that means?””

Jared's face drained of color.

Then Vanessa said something that made him slowly lower the phone.

“Your mother has no idea what she's dealing with. If she won't sign the property over, we'll make sure she loses it another way.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Jared looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

“Mom,” he whispered, “I think Vanessa and her father have been planning something without telling me.””

Margaret closed the laptop.

“Then we need to find out what they were planning.””

She opened the final attachment.

It was a confidential development agreement.

The document had been signed by Richard Whitmore, Vanessa, and one additional person.

I leaned closer.

The third signature belonged to someone I never expected.

*Dr. Martin Hale.*

May you like

Thomas's attending physician.

And beneath his signature was a payment authorization dated two days before my husband's death.
