Chapter 14: The Document Richard Thought Was Destroyed

Nobody moved.

Richard had just admitted something he clearly hadn't intended to say.

Elaine looked at him.

Then at me.

Her grip tightened around the leather folder.

Margaret spoke first.

“What original document, Richard?””

He straightened his coat.

“I was referring to an old business agreement.””

“Don't lie,” I said.

He looked at me with irritation.

“Mrs. Bennett, you should really learn to stay out of matters you don't understand.””

I stepped forward.

“I've spent three months being told that. I'm finished listening.””

Elaine turned toward the elevator.

The investigator blocked her path.

“Ms. Porter, we'd like to ask you a few questions.””

She looked at Richard.

He gave her a subtle shake of his head.

That small movement told me everything.

They had rehearsed this.

They had planned what to say if someone discovered the missing document.

But they hadn't expected me to be standing there.

Margaret approached Elaine.

“What did you remove from the clock?””

“Nothing.””

“We have security footage.””

Elaine swallowed.

“Then you know I was there.””

“Where is the document?””

Elaine looked down.

Richard interrupted.

“This conversation is over.””

He reached for the elevator button.

The investigator moved between him and the doors.

“Sir, you're welcome to leave after we finish identifying everyone present.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Do you know who I am?””

The investigator didn't blink.

“Yes. That's why we're being careful.””

I looked at Elaine.

“Was the original will inside that clock?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered, “Yes.””

Margaret closed her eyes briefly.

Richard turned sharply.

“Elaine!””

She flinched.

I continued.

“Did you take it?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Elaine opened her mouth.

Richard stepped closer.

“You should speak to your attorney before saying another word.””

Elaine stared at him.

For the first time, she looked more frightened of Richard than of us.

The investigator intervened.

“Ms. Porter, you are not required to answer questions here. But if you possess estate documents belonging to Mrs. Bennett, we need to establish their location.””

Elaine looked at the folder.

Then she slowly placed it on the hood of Richard's car.

“It's not here,” she said.

“Where?”” Margaret demanded.

Elaine looked at me.

“Your husband gave me instructions.””

I frowned.

“What instructions?””

“He told me to keep the original document safe until he was certain you were protected.””

“Then why did you work with Richard?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I made a mistake.””

Richard laughed.

“A mistake? You've been paid for years.””

Elaine turned toward him.

“And you promised me that nobody would get hurt!””

Richard's face darkened.

“Be quiet.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Elaine shook her head.

“I can't explain everything here.””

“Then explain it somewhere else.””

The investigator stepped forward.

“Ms. Porter, I suggest you cooperate.””

Elaine nodded slowly.

Then she looked at me.

“Mrs. Bennett, your husband didn't leave you the mountain property because he wanted you to manage a business.””

I stared at her.

“Then why?””

“Because the property was the only thing he could protect from Richard.””

Margaret frowned.

“Explain.””

Elaine opened the leather folder.

Inside were copies of corporate records, transfer documents, and bank statements.

She pointed to a company name.

Northstar Holdings.

I recognized it from the payment Jared had shown us.

“Northstar was created to conceal payments made to several individuals involved in the property development project,” Elaine explained.

Richard stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

The investigator raised his hand.

“Stay where you are.””

Elaine continued.

“Richard wanted Thomas's land because it contained more than a lake and a forest. It contained the controlling rights to the regional water supply.””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Thomas owned the original watershed easements. Several surrounding properties depended on those rights.””

Elaine pointed to the documents.

“Richard's resort project required those easements. Without them, the development couldn't receive its final approvals.””

I looked at Richard.

“So you needed my property.””

He gave a cold smile.

“I have no intention of discussing business with you.””

Elaine continued.

“Thomas discovered that Richard's company had been using false environmental assessments to obtain preliminary approvals.””

I felt sick.

“And Thomas threatened to expose him?””

“Yes.””

Richard laughed.

“She's inventing stories to save herself.””

Elaine turned toward him.

“You paid me to change the execution records.””

“Careful.””

“You asked me to create a version of Thomas's will that would give Jared control of the estate.””

Richard's expression changed.

Margaret looked stunned.

“You forged the will?””

Elaine nodded.

“I prepared a replacement document. But Thomas discovered it before it could be finalized.””

I looked at the woman.

“Then what happened to the real will?””

Elaine opened her handbag and removed a small sealed envelope.

She held it toward me.

“Thomas gave me this himself.””

My hands began to shake.

I reached for it.

Richard suddenly moved.

He grabbed the envelope.

But the investigator caught his wrist.

“Don't touch that.””

Richard struggled.

“Get your hands off me!””

Another officer entered the garage.

He took Richard aside while the investigator retrieved the envelope.

Elaine looked as though she might collapse.

“I'm sorry, Mrs. Bennett.””

I didn't answer.

The investigator handed me the envelope.

Thomas's handwriting was on the front.

For Leah. Open only when the truth has been established.

I broke the seal.

Inside was a single page.

The title read:

*LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT — ORIGINAL EXECUTED COPY.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My name appeared as the sole beneficiary of the mountain estate, the private trust, and several additional business holdings.

Jared's inheritance was also listed.

The Miami penthouse.

A separate investment account.

And a provision requiring him to repay any unauthorized loans secured against family property.

But the final section was different.

It mentioned a charitable trust.

The Thomas Bennett Foundation.

I looked at Margaret.

“What is this?””

She read the paragraph.

Her eyes widened.

“Thomas established this foundation to protect the valley permanently.””

I looked at the signature page.

Two witnesses.

A licensed notary.

And a date.

Everything was properly executed.

Arthur's suspicions had been correct.

The document we had been shown earlier was not the real will.

This was.

I looked at Elaine.

“Why did you keep this?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Because Thomas told me that if I ever allowed Richard to get control of the estate, I would be responsible for destroying everything he had spent his life protecting.””

Richard was still arguing with the officers.

I folded the will carefully.

Then I noticed a handwritten note tucked inside the back cover.

It contained one sentence.

Leah, there is one final condition I need you to understand before you decide what to do with Jared.

I unfolded the note.

The words were short.

But they changed everything.

Your son did not inherit the penthouse outright.

I read it again.

Then I looked at Margaret.

“Does this mean the penthouse isn't his?””

Margaret examined the original document.

Her face became serious.

“No, Leah. It means Thomas placed the penthouse inside a conditional trust.””

“What condition?””

She pointed to the final paragraph.

Jared's ownership would become permanent only after he fulfilled a specific obligation.

An obligation that had to be completed within ninety days of Thomas's death.

I looked at the date.

The deadline was approaching.

“What was he supposed to do?””

Margaret read the clause aloud.

“Jared Bennett must disclose all financial arrangements made with Richard Whitmore and cooperate fully with any investigation into the attempted fraudulent transfer of family assets.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“And if he doesn't?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Ownership of the penthouse automatically reverts to the estate.””

I stared at the document.

Suddenly, Vanessa's excitement over the Miami penthouse made sense.

She believed it was theirs.

But Thomas had given Jared a chance.

A chance to tell the truth.

A chance to protect his family.

And my son had chosen to lie.

I looked toward Richard.

“Does he know about this condition?””

Elaine nodded.

“He knows.””

“Does Jared?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered, “Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

May you like

The deadline was in eleven days.

And my son had been trying to steal the one property Thomas had left me while pretending he had already secured his own inheritance.
