Chapter 5: The Truth My Wife Tried to Leave Behind
I didn’t sleep after Rachel’s phone call.
Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.
Not anymore.
Fear was simple.
Fear told you to run.
But this was something different.
This was a question that had been waiting for two years.
What did Emily know?
And why didn’t she tell me?
I sat in my office until the sun came up, staring at the same photograph on my desk.
Emily was smiling in it.
The kind of smile that made everyone around her feel lighter.
She had always been the person who noticed things.
Small things.
A stranger looking sad.
A child sitting alone.
A friend pretending everything was okay.
She saw what others missed.
So the idea that she had been investigating Vanessa before she died…
It made my stomach turn.
Because Emily didn’t keep secrets from me.
Not important ones.
Unless she thought she was protecting me.
My phone was still on the desk.
Rachel’s number was saved.
I stared at it for several minutes before calling.
She answered after one ring.
“I knew you would call.””
Her voice sounded tired.
“How did you know?””
“Because if I were in your position, I would need answers too.””
I sat back.
“Rachel, start from the beginning.””
There was silence.
Then she spoke.
“I worked for Vanessa for almost three years.””
“What kind of work?””
“Personal assistant.””
I frowned.
“Why did you quit?””
A long pause.
“Because I found out what she was doing.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What was she doing?””
“She collected people.””
The words sounded strange.
“What?””
“She found people who were vulnerable.””
I said nothing.
“She didn’t just become friends with them. She studied them.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain.””
Rachel sighed.
“Vanessa was always interested in wealthy families. Families with problems. Families where one person was carrying too much responsibility.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Toward Sophia’s room.
“She looked for people who needed help.””
“Yes.””
Rachel paused.
“Because people who need help are easier to control.””
The room felt colder.
“Did she do this before?””
“Yes.””
“With who?””
“I don’t know all the details.””
“But you know something.””
“Yes.””
Her voice lowered.
“There was another family.””
My fingers pressed against the phone.
“What happened?””
“She became close to a woman named Caroline. Caroline had two children and a husband who traveled often.””
“And?””
“Vanessa slowly convinced Caroline that she wasn’t capable of handling everything alone.””
I stood up.
“What happened next?””
“Caroline started relying on her.””
“Then?””
“Then Vanessa became involved in everything.””
Rachel’s voice became quieter.
“School decisions. Medical appointments. Financial planning.””
I closed my eyes.
The pattern.
It was the same.
The same thing she had done with me.
“What happened to Caroline?””
Rachel hesitated.
“She lost custody of her children temporarily during a court dispute.””
My heart dropped.
“And Vanessa?””
“She became the person the court trusted.””
I stared at the wall.
“So Vanessa replaced her.””
“She didn’t replace her.””
Rachel corrected me.
“She positioned herself as the only reasonable person in the room.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because that was exactly what Vanessa had done.
She didn’t attack directly.
She created situations.
She planted doubts.
She waited.
Then she stepped forward as the solution.
I looked at Emily’s picture again.
“What did my wife know?””
Rachel was quiet for a long time.
Then she said:
“Emily found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Notes. Messages. Emails.””
“About Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Where are they?””
“I don’t know.””
My heart sank.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Rachel sounded frustrated.
“Emily was careful. She knew Vanessa watched people.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Watched?””
“Yes.””
“She had cameras?””
“I don’t know about cameras.””
I looked at the hidden camera footage in my mind.
“Yes, she did.””
Rachel became silent.
Then whispered:
“She actually did it?””
“What?””
“She installed cameras before.””
My breathing stopped.
“What do you mean?””
“When I worked for Vanessa, she used hidden cameras in houses where she had access.””
My hand went cold.
“She was spying on people?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To collect information.””
I thought about Vanessa looking directly at the camera.
She wasn’t surprised by cameras.
She was familiar with them.
This wasn’t new.
This was a habit.
“Rachel.””
“Yes?””
“How did Emily find out?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
“Try.””
Rachel took a breath.
“Emily contacted me.””
I froze.
“When?””
“Two months before she died.””
The room went completely silent.
“She contacted you?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
My chest tightened.
“What did she say?””
Rachel’s voice became emotional.
“She said if anything happened to her, I needed to protect Sophia.””
I stood there, unable to move.
My wife.
My wife had been worried.
She had known something was wrong.
And I had no idea.
“Did Emily think Vanessa would hurt her?””
“I don’t know.””
“Rachel.””
“I don’t know.””
Her voice cracked.
“But she was scared.””
Those words hurt more than anything else.
Emily was not someone who scared easily.
She faced problems.
She fought.
She protected people.
If she was scared…
Then something was very wrong.
“Did she tell you why?””
Rachel whispered:
“She said Vanessa wanted her life.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“She said Vanessa didn’t want to help her family.””
A pause.
“She wanted to become her family.””
I ended the call.
Not because I was done.
Because I couldn’t hear anymore.
I sat down.
And for the first time since Emily died, I felt something besides grief.
I felt guilt.
Because while I was mourning my wife…
Someone else was slowly stepping into her place.
And I never noticed.
Later that morning, I went through Emily’s belongings.
Not the things I had already organized.
The things I had avoided.
The boxes I couldn’t open.
The memories I wasn’t ready to face.
One box contained old photographs.
Another contained letters.
Then I found a small journal.
Emily’s handwriting was on the cover.
My heart raced.
I opened it.
The first pages were normal.
Thoughts.
Plans.
Notes about Sophia.
Then I found a page dated three months before her death.
My hands shook as I read.
“Something about Vanessa feels wrong.””
I stopped.
I continued.
“She says all the right things, but something feels calculated.””
I turned the page.
“She asks too many questions about Daniel’s finances.””
Another page.
“She wants to know everything about our trust, our insurance, our plans for Sophia.””
My breathing became heavier.
Emily knew.
She knew.
Then I found the final entry.
The handwriting was rushed.
Different.
Like she wrote it quickly.
“Daniel cannot know yet.””
I froze.
“Not until I have proof.””
The next line made my heart break.
“If I am wrong, I don’t want to destroy a friendship.””
The next line:
“If I am right, I need to protect my daughter.””
I closed the journal.
Emily had been trying to protect Sophia.
And she had been trying to protect Vanessa too.
Because that was who Emily was.
She looked for the good in people.
Even when they didn’t deserve it.
But the final page had something else.
A name.
A name I had never seen before.
“Thomas Reed.””
Under it was one sentence:
“He knows the truth.””
I searched my memories.
Nothing.
I didn’t know anyone named Thomas Reed.
I immediately called Michael.
When he answered, I didn’t say hello.
“I found something.””
His tone changed.
“What?””
“A name.””
“Whose?””
“Thomas Reed.””
Silence.
Then:
“Daniel…”
“You know him?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
“You know him.””
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Michael sighed.
“He was an investigator.””
“Investigator?””
“Emily hired him.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“My wife hired a private investigator?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Emily told me not to.””
The same words again.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except me.
“Michael.””
“Yes?””
“What did he find?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I know he gave Emily something.””
“What?””
“I never saw the contents.””
“Where is he now?””
Michael was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Michael.””
“He disappeared.””
The words hit me.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Two weeks before Emily’s accident.””
I looked at the journal.
At Thomas Reed’s name.
At the truth my wife had been chasing.
Something was happening.
Something bigger than Vanessa hiding food.
Bigger than a cruel woman controlling a child.
Vanessa had a history.
Emily found it.
Thomas Reed discovered something.
Then both disappeared from my life.
I looked toward Sophia’s room.
My daughter was still sleeping.
She had no idea how much had happened around her.
No idea how many people had failed her.
But I knew one thing.
I was done reacting.
I was done waiting.
I was going to find Thomas Reed.
May you like
Because somewhere, he had the missing piece.
And I had a feeling that piece would reveal exactly how far Vanessa was willing to go to take my daughter away from me.
