Chapter 3: The Footage That Revealed a Second Betrayal
I waited until everyone was asleep before I watched the footage.
The house was quiet.
The kind of quiet that used to make me feel peaceful.
But now every sound felt different.
The ticking clock in the hallway.
The hum of the refrigerator.
The soft footsteps of Sophia moving in her room.
Everything reminded me that there had been another life happening inside my home.
A life I knew nothing about.
I sat alone in my office with three monitors in front of me.
The security company had connected everything that afternoon.
Every hallway.
Every entrance.
Every room except the bedrooms.
I didn’t want cameras because I wanted to spy on people.
I wanted them because I no longer knew who I could trust.
My finger hovered over the playback button.
For a moment, I hesitated.
Because a part of me was still hoping I was wrong.
A part of me wanted Vanessa to have some reasonable explanation.
Some misunderstanding.
Some mistake.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting something painful.
I had failed to protect my daughter.
I pressed play.
The footage began at 8:14 in the morning.
Vanessa walked into the kitchen.
Sophia followed behind her.
At first, everything looked normal.
Sophia was holding a stuffed rabbit.
Her favorite toy.
The one Emily bought her before she passed away.
I watched my daughter walk toward the table.
She climbed into her chair.
Then Vanessa placed a bowl in front of her.
My heart tightened.
For one second, I thought maybe I had misunderstood everything.
Maybe Vanessa had fed her.
Maybe there was an explanation.
Then I saw what happened next.
Vanessa took the bowl away.
Sophia looked confused.
She reached for it.
Vanessa shook her head.
The audio was clear.
“No.””
Sophia looked up.
“Why?””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Because you didn’t listen.””
My hands tightened.
The footage continued.
Sophia lowered her eyes.
“But I’m hungry.””
Vanessa picked up the bowl.
“You should have thought about that before.””
The little girl became quiet.
Then she whispered:
“Can I have just a little?””
Vanessa walked toward the trash can.
I stopped breathing.
She threw the food away.
The same macaroni I had seen.
Fresh.
Untouched.
Then she looked back at Sophia.
And said something that made my entire body go cold.
“Maybe now you’ll understand.””
I paused the video.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
Not because I didn’t want the truth.
Because I already had it.
Seeing it happen was different.
Hearing about cruelty was painful.
Watching it was something else.
I closed my eyes.
My daughter had stood there.
Watching her own food disappear.
Learning that asking only made things worse.
I forced myself to continue.
Because I needed everything.
Every second.
Every piece of evidence.
The next footage showed something I didn’t expect.
Maria.
She entered the kitchen ten minutes later.
She looked worried.
She immediately went to Sophia.
But Vanessa stopped her.
The two women argued.
No sound at first.
I increased the volume.
Maria’s voice came through.
“She needs breakfast.””
Vanessa responded.
“She needs discipline.””
Maria shook her head.
“She’s a child.””
Vanessa smiled.
That smile.
The same one she had worn when I walked into the kitchen.
The same one that disappeared when she saw me.
“She’s Daniel’s weakness.””
I froze.
I replayed that sentence.
“She’s Daniel’s weakness.””
Vanessa continued.
“He lets guilt control him.””
Maria said something I couldn’t hear clearly.
Then Vanessa answered.
“He thinks he’s protecting her. He doesn’t understand that I’m the only one strong enough to fix her.””
I leaned closer.
Fix her.
That word kept repeating in my mind.
Who gave Vanessa the right?
Who made her believe my daughter needed fixing?
The footage continued.
Then something happened that made me stop again.
Vanessa looked directly at the camera.
Not accidentally.
Not briefly.
She looked straight at it.
My blood ran cold.
How did she know?
I checked the date.
This footage was from three weeks earlier.
Before the cameras were installed.
That wasn’t possible.
Then I realized.
She wasn’t looking at my new cameras.
She was looking at something else.
Something hidden.
Something I didn’t know existed.
I searched through the security settings.
There was an old device connected to the system.
A camera I had never approved.
A camera installed by someone else.
I called the security company immediately.
The technician answered after two rings.
“Mr. Anderson?””
“I need information about an old camera.””
There was a pause.
“What camera?””
“That’s what I’m asking you.””
I gave him the device number.
He checked.
Then his voice changed.
“Sir…”
“What?””
“This camera wasn’t installed by our company.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who installed it?””
“I don’t know.””
“Find out.””
A few minutes later, he called back.
“Mr. Anderson, the installation request came through a third-party contractor.””
“Name?””
Another pause.
“Vanessa Blake.””
I sat frozen.
Vanessa had installed a camera in my house.
Without telling me.
Why?
The answer was obvious.
She had been watching.
But why would someone who claimed to care about my daughter need secret surveillance?
I opened the footage from that camera.
The angle was different.
It showed the hallway near Sophia’s room.
And then I saw something worse.
Vanessa entering Sophia’s bedroom while my daughter slept.
She walked quietly.
She opened drawers.
She looked through toys.
She searched.
I leaned forward.
What was she looking for?
Then she found something.
A small notebook.
Sophia’s notebook.
The one I bought her because she loved drawing.
Vanessa opened it.
The pages were filled with scribbles.
Childlike drawings.
A house.
A family.
A woman with brown hair.
My wife.
Emily.
Vanessa stared at the picture.
Then she tore the page out.
I stood up so quickly my chair fell backward.
“No.””
I watched again.
She tore out my dead wife’s picture.
Then she whispered:
“You don’t need her anymore.””
I felt sick.
This wasn’t discipline.
This wasn’t misunderstanding.
This was something much darker.
Vanessa wasn’t just controlling Sophia.
She was trying to erase pieces of her life.
Pieces of Emily.
Pieces of me.
Pieces of the family she already lost.
I kept watching.
The next few minutes revealed something even more disturbing.
Vanessa opened another drawer.
Inside was a small box.
A box I recognized.
It belonged to Emily.
After she died, I kept some of her personal things for Sophia.
Her letters.
Her jewelry.
Her photographs.
Things I planned to give Sophia when she was older.
Vanessa took the box.
She opened it.
And she smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A satisfied one.
Then she removed a necklace.
Emily’s necklace.
The one she wore every day.
I grabbed my phone.
I almost called Vanessa immediately.
Almost.
But something stopped me.
Anger was not enough.
I needed to think.
People like Vanessa didn’t destroy themselves easily.
They built stories.
They manipulated.
They made themselves victims.
If I confronted her now, she would deny everything.
She would cry.
She would say I misunderstood.
And without enough evidence, she might still find a way to hurt Sophia.
I needed a plan.
The next morning, I woke up early.
Sophia was already awake.
She was sitting on my bed.
Waiting.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are you leaving today?””
The question hurt.
“No.””
She looked surprised.
“You’re staying?””
I nodded.
“I’m staying.””
She smiled.
A small smile.
But it was the first real one I had seen in days.
Then she asked:
“Can we eat breakfast together?””
I smiled.
“Yes.””
We went downstairs.
Maria had prepared pancakes.
Sophia sat at the table.
She looked at the plate.
Then at me.
“Can I?””
I knew what she meant.
Can I eat?
My chest tightened.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
She picked up her fork.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like she was afraid someone would take it away.
I sat beside her.
And I made another promise.
I would not just remove Vanessa from the house.
I would find out why she did this.
Because people rarely risk everything without a reason.
There had to be something behind her obsession.
Something bigger.
After breakfast, Michael arrived.
I showed him the footage.
He watched silently.
When it ended, he looked at me.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“You need to check your finances.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“People who secretly control access to a child often want more than control.””
I shook my head.
“Vanessa doesn’t have access to my money.””
“Are you sure?””
The question bothered me.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure about anything.
Michael opened his laptop.
“Before your wife passed away, did she create any documents for Sophia?””
“Yes.””
“A trust?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Michael looked serious.
“Who manages it?””
I answered immediately.
“I do.””
He looked at me.
“And who was listed as the backup guardian if something happened to you?””
The room became silent.
I slowly realized something.
Something I had never thought about.
A document from two years ago.
A decision made when I was grieving.
A decision I trusted someone else to help organize.
“Daniel?””
I looked at Michael.
“Who?””
I swallowed.
“Vanessa.””
Michael’s expression changed.
And in that moment, I understood.
The food.
The lies.
The control.
It wasn’t about punishment.
It wasn’t about discipline.
Vanessa had a reason.
A reason connected to my daughter.
And maybe…
A reason connected to everything I owned.
I looked toward Sophia.
She was laughing quietly with Maria.
For the first time in days, she looked like a child again.
But I knew something now.
The person who hurt her had not done it randomly.
May you like
She had a plan.
And I was about to uncover exactly what Vanessa wanted.
