Chapter 2: The Signature That Didn't Exist
Dad walked into the garage carrying his briefcase.
He stopped when he saw me.
My cheeks were wet, my hands were shaking, and the broken remains of my mother's golden star rested on the workbench.
Then he noticed Melissa holding my prize envelope.
His smile disappeared.
"What's going on?""
Melissa recovered quickly.
"Daniel, thank goodness you're home. Naomi has been behaving terribly.""
Dad looked at me.
"Sweetheart?""
I tried to speak, but my throat felt too tight.
Chloe answered for me.
"She pushed me.""
Dad frowned.
"Why?""
"Because I moved some of her junk.""
I pointed toward the cardboard box.
"Those aren't junk, Dad.""
He approached it.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
He lifted a damaged certificate.
Then another.
A medal fell out and struck the concrete floor.
Dad crouched and picked it up.
"What happened to these?""
Melissa sighed.
"Daniel, we needed the display cabinet. Chloe has important things too.""
Dad slowly stood.
"So you put Naomi's awards in a box?""
"They were taking up too much room.""
"Why didn't you ask me?""
Melissa rolled her eyes.
"Because it's a cabinet, Daniel. Not a national monument.""
Dad ignored her.
He looked inside the box again.
Then he found the broken golden star.
His expression changed.
"Is this the one your mother gave you?""
I nodded.
He turned it over carefully.
I watched his jaw tighten.
"Chloe?""
She crossed her arms.
"What?""
"Did you break this?""
"It was already old.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Chloe glanced at Melissa.
Melissa immediately stepped forward.
"Daniel, don't interrogate her. Naomi has been hostile all afternoon.""
Dad looked at the envelope in Melissa's hand.
"And why are you holding this?""
Melissa smiled.
"Naomi won some money. I was going to keep it safe.""
"Keep it safe from whom?""
"She's a minor. Someone needs to manage these things.""
Dad extended his hand.
"Give it to me.""
Melissa hesitated.
"Daniel—"
"Now.""
She reluctantly handed him the envelope.
He read the paperwork.
His face brightened.
"Ten thousand dollars? Naomi, this is incredible!""
He turned toward me and hugged me.
"I'm so proud of you.""
For a few seconds, I forgot everything else.
I held on to him.
Then Chloe spoke.
"Mom already promised me the car!""
Dad slowly released me.
"What car?""
Chloe looked irritated.
"The blue SUV. The one we saw at the dealership last weekend.""
Dad turned toward Melissa.
"You promised her a car?""
Melissa shrugged.
"We discussed it.""
"With what money?""
Chloe answered before her mother could.
"Naomi's prize money, obviously.""
Dad stared at her.
"You're planning to buy a car with your stepsister's scholarship money?""
Chloe rolled her eyes.
"She's not going to spend ten thousand dollars on science equipment. She doesn't need all of it.""
"That's not your decision.""
Melissa stepped between them.
"Daniel, please. You're making this sound much worse than it is. We are a family. Naomi benefits from this household every day.""
Dad's voice became colder.
"She is seventeen. Her prize belongs to her.""
"Everything costs money," Melissa snapped.
"The electricity, the food, the mortgage. You cannot expect her to live here for free and keep every dollar she earns.""
I looked at Dad.
He was staring at Melissa as if he had never heard her speak that way before.
Then Chloe made another mistake.
"We won't need her prize money once the other account gets transferred anyway.""
Silence.
Dad turned his head.
"What other account?""
Chloe's face drained of color.
Melissa immediately grabbed her arm.
"Chloe, go upstairs.""
"But—"
"NOW.""
Chloe hurried out.
Dad didn't move.
He watched Melissa for several seconds.
"What account?""
Melissa shook her head.
"She doesn't know what she's talking about.""
"Then explain it.""
"It's nothing.""
"Melissa.""
She picked up her phone.
"Daniel, I've had a long day. We can discuss this later.""
Dad placed his briefcase on the workbench.
"No. We're discussing it now.""
Melissa's expression hardened.
"You are embarrassing me in front of the children.""
"Then stop giving me reasons to ask questions.""
He turned toward me.
"Naomi, go upstairs for a moment.""
I didn't want to leave him alone with Melissa.
But he gently squeezed my shoulder.
"I'll be right behind you.""
I carried the broken star upstairs.
My bedroom was the only place in the house that still felt like mine.
I sat on the edge of my bed and placed the golden star on my desk.
My mother's photograph stood beside it.
She was smiling in the picture, her dark hair falling over one shoulder.
I touched the frame.
"Mom, I wish you were here.""
A few minutes later, I heard raised voices downstairs.
Then a drawer slammed.
I opened my bedroom door.
Dad was standing in the hallway holding a thick blue folder.
He looked pale.
"Naomi, come downstairs.""
Melissa stood near the kitchen island.
Her phone was on the counter.
She was no longer smiling.
Dad placed the folder on the dining table.
"Do you know anything about an account your mother left for you?""
I shook my head.
"What account?""
He opened the folder.
Inside were bank statements, trust documents, and copies of legal correspondence.
My name appeared repeatedly.
Naomi Elizabeth Carter.
I leaned closer.
"What is this?""
Dad took a breath.
"Your mother established a trust for you before she died.""
I looked at him.
"Why didn't I know?""
"Because you were eleven. I thought we'd explain everything when you were older.""
"How much?""
He looked at the statement.
"Approximately three hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
My knees felt weak.
"What?""
"It was funded by your mother's life insurance, investments, and part of the money she inherited from her parents. She wanted it to support your education and give you a secure start in adulthood.""
I looked at Melissa.
She was staring at the floor.
Dad turned another page.
"After I married Melissa, I made sure the trust remained separate from our household finances.""
He paused.
"Or at least, I thought I had.""
He pulled out a document.
The heading read:
Request for Change of Trustee and Authorized Account Control.
Melissa's name appeared in the section requesting authority over the account.
I read it twice.
"Why is her name here?""
Dad didn't answer immediately.
Then he pointed to the bottom.
There was a signature.
Daniel Carter.
My father's signature.
But something was wrong.
I had seen Dad sign hundreds of documents.
This one looked almost identical.
Almost.
Dad leaned closer.
"I never signed this.""
Melissa finally spoke.
"Daniel, you need to calm down.""
He looked at her.
"Who submitted this?""
"It was a routine administrative form.""
"Who submitted it?""
She swallowed.
"I was trying to help.""
Dad laughed once, without humor.
"Help yourself to my daughter's inheritance?""
Melissa's voice rose.
"That's not fair! I've spent six years raising her!""
"You have never had authority over that trust.""
"I am her stepmother!""
"And that doesn't make you the owner of her mother's money.""
I stood frozen beside the table.
The broken golden star was still in my hand.
Dad picked up the paperwork.
"This signature isn't mine.""
Melissa stepped backward.
Then Chloe appeared at the top of the staircase.
Her eyes were red.
"Mom?""
Melissa looked up sharply.
"Go to your room.""
Chloe shook her head.
"You said Dad would never notice.""
Dad slowly turned toward her.
"What did your mother tell you?""
Chloe began crying.
"She said the account was already being transferred.""
Dad's face went completely still.
"Transferred where?""
Chloe looked at Melissa.
May you like
And Melissa whispered something that made my father's expression turn from anger to genuine fear.
"Daniel, please. Don't make me explain this in front of Naomi.""
