Chapter 13: The Person My Mother Chose
Dad stared at the handwritten instruction.
Eleanor leaned closer.
Rebecca adjusted her glasses.
And I stood behind them, trying to understand why everyone suddenly looked so surprised.
"Who is it?"" I asked.
Dad turned the paper toward me.
The name was Eleanor Brooks.
My aunt.
I looked at her.
"What does this mean?""
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"Oh, Claire.""
Dad read the instruction again.
"If Naomi cannot safely inherit this money, it must be transferred to the person who has protected her without expecting anything in return.""
He looked at Eleanor.
"Claire wanted you to control the money?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Not exactly. She wanted me to protect it until Naomi could receive it safely.""
Rebecca examined the document.
"There's a legal distinction. This appears to be a protective contingency clause. It doesn't necessarily make Eleanor the owner. It gives her temporary authority to prevent unauthorized transfers.""
I looked at my aunt.
"Mom trusted you that much?""
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"She trusted me to love you the way she did.""
I hugged her.
For the first time in days, I felt like someone had finally given me something that couldn't be taken away.
A sense of safety.
But Rebecca wasn't finished.
She turned the document over.
"There's another section.""
Dad leaned forward.
"What?""
Rebecca read the paragraph carefully.
"Claire specified that the original beneficiary designation could only be changed through a signed instruction witnessed by two independent parties and confirmed by the estate attorney.""
Eleanor nodded.
"That's why she gave me the letter.""
Rebecca continued.
"Which means the document Melissa and Martin submitted was not valid.""
Dad exhaled.
"Then the money is still Naomi's?""
"Based on what we have seen, yes. But we need the bank to confirm the complete account history.""
I looked at the document again.
"Why did Mom write that I might not be safe inheriting the money?""
Eleanor squeezed my hand.
"Because she was afraid someone would try to take it from you.""
I swallowed.
"She knew.""
"Yes, sweetheart.""
"And she knew it might be someone in our family.""
Eleanor didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Rebecca placed the documents into a folder.
"I want everyone to understand what happens next. We have evidence of attempted unauthorized transfers, falsified documents, and possible financial fraud. We will preserve everything and let the appropriate authorities investigate.""
Dad nodded.
"Whatever it takes.""
That afternoon, the bank confirmed that the larger investment account remained intact.
The balance was $487,326.
The primary trust contained another $285,000 after the reversed transaction and adjustments.
The original $35,000 had been restored before my mother's death.
No legitimate distribution had been made to Melissa, Chloe, or Richard.
But the attempted transfers had left a trail.
And that trail was about to catch up with them.
The following morning, Dad and I met Rebecca at the family house.
Richard had agreed to provide the original beneficiary document.
He insisted on meeting Dad alone.
Rebecca refused.
"If he has a legitimate document, he can hand it over in front of everyone.""
Richard finally agreed.
At eleven o'clock, a black sedan pulled into the driveway.
Richard stepped out wearing a charcoal suit.
He looked exactly as I remembered.
Confident.
Well-groomed.
Smiling as though nothing had happened.
"Daniel.""
He extended his hand.
Dad didn't take it.
Richard glanced at me.
"Naomi. You've grown up.""
I stared at him.
"Not enough to forget what you did.""
His smile disappeared.
Rebecca opened the front door.
"Mr. Carter, please come inside.""
We sat around the dining table.
Richard placed a brown envelope on the table.
"This contains the document Claire signed.""
Rebecca didn't touch it.
"Before we examine it, I want to clarify something. Are you claiming that this document was legally executed?""
"Absolutely.""
"Who witnessed it?""
Richard glanced at Dad.
"That isn't relevant.""
"It is extremely relevant.""
Richard sighed.
"Dr. Price.""
Rebecca opened the envelope.
Inside was a document dated three days before my mother's death.
It stated that my mother wanted to transfer control of her investment accounts to a new administrator.
The signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
Rebecca studied it.
Then she placed it beside the original letter.
"These signatures are not identical.""
Richard leaned back.
"Claire was sick. Her handwriting had changed.""
"That's possible. But the witness section is incomplete.""
Richard's expression tightened.
"Dr. Price witnessed it.""
"Where is his signature?""
Richard looked at the document.
For the first time, he seemed unsure.
Rebecca pointed to the bottom.
"There's no signature.""
Richard cleared his throat.
"He was supposed to complete it later.""
"Then it wasn't properly executed.""
Richard leaned forward.
"You're making this unnecessarily complicated.""
Dad finally spoke.
"You stole from my daughter.""
Richard turned toward him.
"I was trying to protect the family.""
"By transferring nearly half a million dollars?""
"By consolidating assets!""
"Into your company?""
Richard's face hardened.
"Daniel, you have no idea what your wife wanted.""
Dad stood.
"I know exactly what she wanted. She wanted Naomi protected.""
Richard's eyes shifted toward me.
"Your mother wasn't always honest with you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What does that mean?""
Richard opened his mouth.
But Rebecca interrupted.
"Any further allegations should be made through proper legal channels.""
Richard stood.
"Fine. If you want to destroy the family, go ahead.""
Dad pointed toward the door.
"You destroyed it when you decided my daughter's inheritance belonged to you.""
Richard grabbed the envelope.
Rebecca stopped him.
"The document stays here.""
He glared at her.
"You can't keep that.""
"We have a copy. The original is already part of the evidence review.""
Richard released it.
Then he looked at Dad.
"You're going to regret this.""
Dad didn't move.
Richard walked outside.
Through the window, I watched him take out his phone.
He made a call.
A few seconds later, Dad's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice came through.
"Mr. Carter? My name is Laura Mitchell. I was Claire's nurse.""
Dad looked at Rebecca.
"We spoke yesterday.""
"I know. I need to tell you something else.""
"What is it?""
Laura took a breath.
"I found an additional page in the hospital archive. It was attached to the medical authorization.""
Dad straightened.
"What page?""
"The page identifying who requested Dr. Price's involvement.""
Rebecca immediately motioned for the phone to be placed on speaker.
Laura continued.
"It was Richard Carter.""
Dad looked through the window.
His brother was still standing beside his car.
"Are you certain?""
"Yes. His signature is on the request.""
Dad slowly turned away from the window.
Then Laura added:
"But there's something else. The request was submitted before Claire was admitted to the hospital.""
Silence.
Rebecca closed her eyes.
Richard hadn't simply taken advantage of my mother's illness.
He had planned his involvement before she was even hospitalized.
May you like
And suddenly, the question wasn't whether he had betrayed our family.
It was how long he had been waiting to do it.
