Chapter 13: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The phone remained in my hand after the call ended.

I didn't move.

I couldn't.

Because two people who claimed to be protecting me had just given me two completely different versions of the truth.

Ethan Cross said Daniel Whitmore was hiding the real story.

Daniel Whitmore said Ethan Cross was responsible for my father's death.

And somewhere between those two accusations was the truth.

The worst part wasn't knowing someone was lying.

I already knew that.

The worst part was realizing that I had no idea who was telling the truth.

I looked at Ethan.

He looked back at me.

For the first time since he entered the room, I saw something different in his expression.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"You heard him.""

My voice was quiet.

Ethan nodded.

"Yes.""

"Daniel says you caused my father's death.""

The room became completely silent.

Dr. Vance looked between us.

He seemed shocked.

Not by the accusation.

By the timing.

As if this was a conversation he knew would eventually happen but hoped would happen later.

Ethan closed his eyes for a moment.

Then opened them.

"I knew this day would come.""

That answer made my stomach tighten.

"You knew?""

He looked at me.

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

He didn't answer immediately.

And that silence told me more than words could.

"You all do that.""

My voice cracked.

"Every single one of you.""

I looked around the room.

"You wait until I discover something.""

"You let me find pieces of my own life like I'm investigating a stranger.""

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no defense.

Not anymore.

Ethan lowered his head.

"You're right.""

I almost laughed.

Another person admitting they were wrong.

Another apology after the damage was already done.

"I don't want an apology.""

I looked at him.

"I want the truth.""

Ethan nodded.

"You deserve that.""

"Then start.""

He looked at the documents on the table.

"Your father didn't die because of me.""

I watched his face carefully.

"Then why did Daniel say that?""

"Because Daniel believes he knows the truth.""

"Does he?""

Ethan hesitated.

"Some of it.""

That answer frustrated me.

"Some of it?""

"Everyone involved in this story has only seen one side.""

He stepped closer.

"Your grandmother knew Richard's plans.""

Dr. Vance nodded slightly.

"Yes.""

"Your father discovered what Richard was doing.""

Ethan continued.

"Yes.""

"My mother investigated after my father's death.""

I looked at him.

"And you?""

His eyes lowered.

"I found out years later.""

"How?""

"My father.""

I froze.

"Richard?""

Ethan shook his head.

"No.""

A pause.

"My real father.""

The words stopped me.

"Real father?""

Ethan looked at the documents.

"Not everything about the Cross family is what you think.""

My mind was exhausted from trying to keep up.

"Explain.""

He took a breath.

"Richard Cross raised Julian and me.""

"Yes.""

"But he wasn't my biological father.""

Silence.

Another hidden truth.

Another secret identity.

"Then who was?""

Ethan looked at Dr. Vance.

The doctor looked away.

That reaction made my heart sink.

"You know.""

Dr. Vance was quiet.

"Ethan.""

"No.""

Ethan looked at him.

"She needs to know.""

I turned.

"Who?""

Dr. Vance looked at me.

His expression carried years of regret.

"Your father.""

My eyes widened.

"What?""

Ethan nodded.

"My biological father was your father.""

The room disappeared.

For several seconds, I heard nothing.

No machines.

No voices.

No movement.

Just those words.

My father.

Ethan's father.

A connection that made no sense.

I shook my head.

"No.""

Ethan looked at me sadly.

"I know how impossible it sounds.""

"Because it is impossible.""

I pointed at the documents.

"My father died.""

"Yes.""

"And your father?""

"Also died.""

I stared at him.

"Then explain.""

Ethan walked toward the table.

He picked up the original birth document.

"Before you were born, your father discovered Richard Cross was involved in illegal financial activities.""

I nodded slowly.

"I know.""

"But he also discovered something else.""

"What?""

"Richard had been hiding another child.""

My breath stopped.

"No.""

Ethan looked at me.

"Me.""

The word echoed.

I looked at him.

A man I had known as Julian's brother.

A man I had barely noticed at family events.

A man who was apparently connected to me by blood.

"You are saying...""

I couldn't finish.

Ethan did.

"We share the same father.""

The room was silent.

Dr. Vance finally spoke.

"Clara, your father wanted to protect Ethan.""

I turned toward him.

"Why?""

"Because Richard was using Ethan.""

Ethan nodded.

"Richard knew I wasn't his son.""

My heart tightened.

"Then why raise you?""

"Because my existence gave him leverage.""

"Against who?""

Ethan looked at me.

"Your father.""

I felt sick.

The pieces started connecting.

Richard didn't just want money.

He wanted control.

He wanted to destroy anyone who could challenge him.

And my father was one of those people.

"My father knew about you.""

Ethan nodded.

"Yes.""

"And my mother?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

My parents had known.

They had protected another child.

They had protected someone connected to the family that threatened them.

"Why didn't they tell me?""

Ethan's expression softened.

"Because they wanted you to have a childhood.""

I opened my eyes.

"And you?""

"I didn't.""

That answer was heartbreaking.

"I grew up inside Richard's house.""

He looked away.

"I grew up listening to him talk about your family like they were enemies.""

A pause.

"Then I discovered the truth.""

"What truth?""

"That my entire life was built on a lie.""

I understood that feeling more than anyone.

Ethan looked at me.

"That's why I contacted you.""

"To tell me?""

"To warn you.""

"About Daniel?""

He nodded.

I looked at the phone.

Daniel's accusation.

Ethan's explanation.

Someone was lying.

The question was who.

Dr. Vance spoke quietly.

"There is something else you should know.""

I turned.

"What?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"The reason Daniel became your grandmother's attorney.""

I frowned.

"What about it?""

"He wasn't originally hired by your grandmother.""

The room went silent.

"Then who hired him?""

Dr. Vance looked at Ethan.

Ethan answered.

"Richard Cross.""

I felt cold.

Daniel.

The person who delivered my grandmother's letter.

The person who appeared to help.

The person who guided me toward the archive.

Had originally been connected to Richard Cross.

My thoughts raced.

"But he helped expose everything.""

Ethan nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

"Because people can change.""

That answer surprised me.

Because it sounded like something I needed to remember.

Not everyone was simply good or bad.

Sometimes people lived too long inside mistakes.

Sometimes they tried to repair damage after causing it.

But that didn't mean they were innocent.

"Where is Daniel now?""

Dr. Vance checked his phone.

"He left the hospital.""

My heart tightened.

"Why?""

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan spoke.

"Because he knows we found the original records.""

A terrible feeling moved through me.

"What does he want?""

Ethan looked at me.

"The archive.""

I shook my head.

"Why?""

"Because the final documents are not about the past.""

He stepped closer.

"They are about the present.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan pointed to the folder.

"Your grandmother didn't hide the archive because of Richard.""

"Then who?""

He looked directly at me.

"Because she discovered someone else was continuing Richard's work.""

The room went still.

Someone else.

Someone alive.

Someone still trying to control everything.

"Who?""

Ethan didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the documents.

"Open the final page.""

My hands moved slowly.

I turned the folder.

There was one last document.

A recent one.

Created only weeks before my divorce.

I read the title.

*Transfer Agreement Review: Bennett Foundation Ownership Protection.*

My eyes moved down.

Then stopped.

Because the signature at the bottom was familiar.

Not Marcus.

Not Daniel.

Not Julian.

Not Sienna.

Someone much closer.

Someone who had been comforting me after my divorce.

Someone who had told me they were on my side.

Someone I never suspected.

I looked up.

My voice barely worked.

"No.""

Ethan watched me.

"Yes.""

I looked at Dr. Vance.

At the document.

At the signature.

And finally, I understood why everyone had been afraid of the truth.

Because the person who wanted control of my life wasn't outside my family.

They were already inside it.

The signature belonged to:

*My mother.*

I stepped back.

"No.""

The room spun.

"My mother?""

Ethan's face changed.

"Clara...""

I couldn't breathe.

The woman who protected me.

The woman everyone described as brave.

The woman who spent her life trying to keep me safe.

Her name was on a document connected to the foundation takeover.

"Explain.""

Nobody answered.

Then Dr. Vance whispered:

"Because your mother wasn't trying to take control.""

I looked at him.

"Then what was she doing?""

He stared at the signature.

"She was trying to stop someone else from taking it.""

I froze.

Another twist.

Another truth hidden behind another truth.

"Then why does it look like she signed it?""

Dr. Vance's expression darkened.

"Because someone forged the rest of the document.""

I stared.

"Someone?""

He nodded.

"Someone who knew exactly how your family worked.""

My phone suddenly rang.

Again.

This time, the number wasn't unknown.

It was Daniel.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel's voice came through.

But he sounded different.

Afraid.

"Clara.""

"Where are you?""

A pause.

"Far enough away that they can't reach me.""

My heart tightened.

"Who?""

Daniel's voice lowered.

"The person who has been moving every piece on the board.""

I looked at the others.

"Tell me.""

Silence.

Then he said:

"You need to understand something.""

"What?""

"The person you think you are fighting...""

A pause.

"Isn't the person you should be afraid of.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Who should I be afraid of?""

Daniel answered with one sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

"The person who taught Julian how to destroy you.""

The call ended.

And suddenly...

I knew.

May you like

The enemy wasn't the person who betrayed me.

It was the person who taught them how.
