Chapter 12: The Identity They Tried To Erase

The message stayed on my screen long after the phone stopped vibrating.

*Ask him why your name was never supposed to exist.*

Those words were impossible to ignore.

Not because I believed them immediately.

Because I didn't.

I had learned something over the past few days.

The truth was rarely found in one person's version of events.

Everyone had their own perspective.

Their own fears.

Their own reasons.

Julian had his excuses.

Sienna had her regrets.

Marcus had his secrets.

Dr. Vance had his promises.

And now Ethan Cross had a message.

A warning from the person who had disappeared right when the truth began surfacing.

I stared at his name.

Ethan Cross.

Julian's brother.

The man who had been present at my wedding.

The man my mother mentioned.

The man who apparently knew things about my family before I did.

"What happened?""

Julian's voice interrupted my thoughts.

I looked up.

He was watching me.

Not with anger.

With concern.

I almost forgot what that looked like.

The old Julian would have demanded to know.

The old Julian would have accused me of hiding something.

But this Julian looked uncertain.

Maybe because for the first time, he understood what it felt like to stand outside the truth.

"Nothing.""

The answer came automatically.

Then I stopped.

Because that was exactly what everyone had done to me.

They said nothing.

They hid things.

They protected me from reality.

I looked at him.

"Ethan contacted me.""

Julian immediately froze.

That reaction told me everything.

"What did he say?""

I held up the phone.

He read the message.

His face changed.

"What does he mean?""

I looked at him.

"I was hoping you could tell me.""

He looked away.

"I don't know.""

I studied him.

The frustrating thing was...

I believed him.

And somehow, that made everything more complicated.

Because Julian was guilty.

But maybe he wasn't guilty of everything.

Maybe he was a person who had been raised inside a system of secrets.

A person who had inherited a family's darkness without understanding its origin.

But understanding someone didn't erase what they did.

It only explained it.

Dr. Vance approached.

"Clara.""

I turned.

"We need to leave.""

"To St. Jude's?""

He nodded.

I looked at the others.

Marcus.

Daniel.

Olivia.

Julian.

Everyone had followed me into this nightmare.

But I realized something.

The next truth was mine.

Not theirs.

"Only Dr. Vance comes with me.""

Marcus looked surprised.

"Clara—"

"No.""

I stopped him.

"I need to see these records without another layer of explanation.""

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

The drive to St. Jude's was quiet.

The city moved outside the window.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Families going about ordinary lives.

It felt strange.

Because my entire world had changed, yet everyone else continued normally.

I wondered how many people were carrying hidden truths.

How many smiles covered complicated stories.

When we arrived, Dr. Vance didn't take me to the main patient area.

He led me through a private hallway.

A hallway I had never seen before.

"Where are we going?""

"Archives.""

"Medical archives?""

"Yes.""

I stopped walking.

"How long have my records been here?""

Dr. Vance hesitated.

"Since you were born.""

That answer made me stop.

"Since I was born?""

He nodded.

"Your mother requested special protection.""

"Why?""

He looked at me.

"Because she believed someone might try to access them.""

I felt a familiar anger.

Someone might try.

Always someone.

Always a threat.

Always a reason I wasn't told.

We reached a secured door.

Dr. Vance entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room filled with locked cabinets.

He walked to one cabinet.

Then another.

Finally, he stopped.

"This is it.""

My heartbeat increased.

A small box sat inside.

My name was written on it.

Not my married name.

Not Clara Cross.

My original name.

Clara Bennett.

I touched the box.

"Why does this feel like I'm meeting myself for the first time?""

Dr. Vance looked sad.

"Because everyone else was allowed to know parts of you that you weren't.""

That sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

I opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Birth records.

Medical history.

Family information.

Everything that should have been ordinary.

But I knew it wasn't.

I picked up the first page.

My birth certificate.

My eyes moved across it.

Then stopped.

The name of my father.

My mother's name.

Everything appeared normal.

I looked confused.

"This is my birth certificate.""

Dr. Vance nodded.

"Yes.""

"But Marcus said it was changed.""

"It was.""

"Where?""

He pointed.

"Look closer.""

I examined the document.

Then I saw it.

A faint line.

A correction.

A replacement.

Someone had altered one section.

"What was there before?""

Dr. Vance opened another envelope.

Inside was a copy.

An older copy.

The original.

I placed them side by side.

And then...

I saw the difference.

The original document contained a name I had never seen before.

Not my father's.

Not my mother's.

Another name.

A third person.

My hands went cold.

"Who is this?""

Dr. Vance didn't answer immediately.

"Clara...""

"Who is this?""

He took a breath.

"The person who was listed as your biological parent before the record was changed.""

My heart stopped.

Biological parent.

The phrase didn't make sense.

"My father is my father.""

Dr. Vance nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

He looked at the document.

"Because there was a legal arrangement made before your birth.""

I stared.

"What kind of arrangement?""

He hesitated.

And that hesitation made me afraid.

"Your grandmother was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

He looked at me.

"From a custody battle.""

My mind raced.

"Custody?""

"Yes.""

"Before I was born?""

He nodded.

I looked at the documents again.

The name.

The changes.

The hidden records.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

"What was my grandmother afraid of?""

Dr. Vance didn't answer.

Because someone else did.

"She was afraid of losing you.""

I turned.

A voice behind me.

A voice I recognized.

My entire body froze.

"Ethan.""

He stood in the doorway.

Older than before.

Tired.

But alive.

Dr. Vance stepped forward.

"You shouldn't be here.""

Ethan ignored him.

His eyes were on me.

"I knew you would find this eventually.""

I stared.

"You sent the message.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

His expression changed.

"Because you deserved to know before everyone else decided what you should believe.""

The irony wasn't lost on me.

A Cross family member saying that.

I walked toward him.

"You know about this.""

"Yes.""

"How long?""

He looked away.

"My entire life.""

The words hit me.

My entire life.

Another person who knew.

Another person who watched.

"What is happening?""

Ethan took a breath.

"Your birth wasn't supposed to be hidden.""

I frowned.

"Then why was it?""

"Because Richard Cross found out.""

The name again.

Always him.

"What did he find out?""

Ethan looked at the document.

"That you were the legal heir to something more important than the foundation.""

"What?""

He looked at me.

"Control.""

I shook my head.

"Control over what?""

"The Bennett family archive.""

I stared.

The archive again.

Everything came back to that.

"But my grandmother created the archive.""

"No.""

Ethan shook his head.

"Your grandmother protected it.""

"What do you mean?""

He stepped closer.

"The archive existed before your grandmother.""

I froze.

"Before?""

"Yes.""

"Who created it?""

He looked at me.

"Your biological grandfather.""

I frowned.

"My biological grandfather?""

The words felt strange.

Ethan nodded.

"Your family history is not what you were told.""

I felt dizzy.

Too many truths.

Too many pieces.

"Then tell me.""

Ethan looked at Dr. Vance.

Then back at me.

"Your mother was not the only person protecting a secret.""

My heart raced.

"What secret?""

He spoke slowly.

"The Bennett family name was changed generations ago.""

I stared.

"What?""

"Because someone wanted to erase your connection to another family.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Which family?""

Ethan looked at me.

"The Cross family.""

Silence.

Impossible.

No.

I shook my head.

"That makes no sense.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

"You're saying I'm related to you?""

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

The walls.

The documents.

Everything seemed unreal.

"Why would nobody tell me?""

Ethan's expression was full of regret.

"Because Richard Cross spent his entire life trying to hide that connection.""

"Why?""

"Because the truth would mean you had a claim.""

"A claim to what?""

Ethan looked at the original document.

"The Cross inheritance.""

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was too much.

"I thought this was about the Bennett foundation.""

"It was never only about that.""

He looked at me.

"The foundation was the beginning.""

My hands trembled.

"And the rest?""

Ethan's voice lowered.

"The rest is why your marriage was destroyed.""

I stared.

"Julian knew?""

Ethan looked away.

"No.""

That surprised me.

"Then who?""

He answered quietly.

"Someone else.""

"Who?""

Ethan hesitated.

Then said:

"The person who has been guiding every move from the beginning.""

My heart started beating faster.

"Who?""

He looked at me.

And whispered:

"Your grandmother's attorney.""

I froze.

Daniel.

The man who carried the letters.

The man who helped uncover the truth.

The man who said he was protecting my family.

"No.""

Ethan nodded.

"Yes.""

I stepped back.

"Why?""

"Because he knows what happens if the archive is opened completely.""

"What happens?""

Ethan looked at me.

"The truth doesn't just destroy Julian Cross.""

A pause.

"It destroys the person who helped create the entire system.""

I looked at the documents.

The secrets.

The names.

The hidden history.

Then I understood.

The reason everyone was afraid of the archive wasn't because it contained money.

It contained responsibility.

It contained proof.

And someone had spent decades making sure nobody opened it.

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke.

A voice I recognized immediately.

Daniel Whitmore.

"Clara.""

My heart stopped.

"Where are you?""

Silence.

Then:

"I know Ethan is with you.""

I said nothing.

His next words made my blood run cold.

"Do not trust him.""

I looked at Ethan.

Then back at the phone.

Daniel continued.

"Because Ethan is the reason your father died.""

The call ended.

May you like

And for the first time...

I didn't know which side the truth was on.
