Chapter 4: The Enemy Inside The Mansion
Claire Beaumont had spent her entire life understanding one thing.
Danger rarely announced itself.
It didn’t always come with shouting.
It didn’t always come with threats.
Sometimes danger smiled.
Sometimes it poured your coffee.
Sometimes it stood beside you and called itself family.
And after Dominic Valtieri’s confession, Claire could no longer look at the mansion the same way.
The beautiful walls.
The expensive furniture.
The perfectly trained staff.
Everything felt different.
Because now she knew there was a secret buried underneath it all.
Someone had killed Dominic’s wife.
Someone had scared three innocent children into believing the world was always waiting to hurt them.
And that person was still somewhere close.
Too close.
The next morning, Claire woke up to find something strange.
Silence.
Not normal silence.
The kind of silence that felt planned.
She sat up immediately.
Her instincts had been developed through years of survival.
When something was wrong, she felt it before she understood it.
She walked to her door.
The hallway was empty.
No staff.
No footsteps.
No sound from the triplets.
That alone was unusual.
The boys were never quiet.
Especially not all three at once.
Claire moved quickly toward their rooms.
Before she reached the door, she heard a voice.
A whisper.
“Don’t tell her.””
Claire stopped.
It was Adrian.
She opened the door carefully.
Inside, the three boys sat on the floor.
A small box rested between them.
The moment they saw her, they froze.
“What are you doing?”” Claire asked.
Nobody answered.
Claire looked at the box.
Then at Adrian.
“Is that what your mother left?””
The boys became still.
That was enough.
She knew.
Adrian immediately grabbed the box.
“You can’t see it.””
Claire didn’t move closer.
“Okay.””
The answer surprised him.
“You’re not going to ask?””
“I want to.””
“Then why don’t you?””
“Because you’re scared.””
The boy’s expression changed.
“I’m not scared.””
Claire smiled sadly.
“Adrian, you’re holding that box like someone is going to take it away.””
He looked down.
His grip loosened slightly.
For a moment, he looked less like a feared child and more like what he really was.
A little boy trying to protect the last piece of his mother.
Claire sat on the floor.
“Do you know what I think?””
The boys watched her.
“I think your mother left you something important.””
Adrian said nothing.
“I think you found it after she was gone.””
Still nothing.
“And I think you’re afraid because whoever hurt your family might want it.””
The room became completely silent.
Then Luca whispered:
“How did you know?””
Claire’s heart tightened.
Because the answer confirmed everything.
“There are some things people only hide when they’re afraid.””
Matteo looked at the box.
“She said never give it to anyone.””
Claire nodded.
“Then don’t.””
The boys stared.
“You’re not curious?”” Luca asked.
“Of course I’m curious.””
“Then why?””
“Because trust is more important than curiosity.””
The boys exchanged a look.
That was new.
Adults usually wanted answers.
Adults usually wanted secrets.
Claire wanted them to feel safe.
A small sound came from the hallway.
The boys immediately changed.
Their bodies stiffened.
Their faces became cold.
Claire noticed.
“Who is it?””
Nobody answered.
Then the door opened.
Elena stood there.
“Mr. Valtieri wants to see the children.””
The boys relaxed slightly.
But Claire noticed something.
They were not afraid of Elena.
They were afraid of what Elena represented.
Another adult.
Another unknown.
Claire stood.
“Can I come?””
Elena hesitated.
“Mr. Valtieri asked for them only.””
Claire nodded.
“Okay.””
But when the boys walked away, Adrian looked back at her.
A silent question.
Are you still here?
Claire understood.
She gave him a small nod.
Yes.
The meeting happened in Dominic’s office.
Claire was not inside.
But she could hear enough.
Raised voices.
Not shouting.
Dominic rarely shouted.
That made it worse.
He was the kind of man who became more dangerous when he became quiet.
After twenty minutes, the door opened.
Adrian walked out first.
His face was pale.
Claire immediately stood.
“What happened?””
The boy looked at her.
“Nothing.””
Claire frowned.
She knew that word.
Nothing usually meant something.
Before she could ask again, Dominic appeared.
His eyes went to Claire.
“You were not asked to interfere.””
Claire met his gaze.
“I didn’t.””
“You were in their room.””
“They needed someone.””
His jaw tightened.
“They need discipline.””
“No.””
The word came out faster than she intended.
Dominic stepped closer.
“No?””
Claire held her ground.
“They need someone who believes them.””
A long silence followed.
Then Dominic said:
“Careful.””
Claire felt the warning.
But she didn’t back away.
“About what?””
“About assuming you know this family.””
“I don’t.””
She paused.
“But I know what scared children look like.””
That hit him.
She saw it.
The brief pain.
The memory.
Gone instantly.
Dominic walked past her.
Then stopped.
“There is a security meeting tonight.””
Claire looked confused.
“Why are you telling me?””
“Because you are now involved.””
The words sent a chill through her.
“Involved how?””
Dominic looked back.
“Someone broke into the mansion last night.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
“They didn’t steal anything.””
“Then what did they do?””
Dominic’s expression darkened.
“They entered my sons’ room.””
For the first time since meeting him, Claire saw something close to fear.
Real fear.
Not for himself.
For them.
“Are they okay?””
“Yes.””
“But?””
Dominic looked away.
“But whoever entered knew exactly where to go.””
Claire felt cold.
The mansion was supposed to be the safest place in the city.
Yet someone walked inside.
Someone bypassed security.
Someone reached the children.
And nobody knew how.
That evening, Claire attended the security meeting.
She sat quietly in the corner.
The room was filled with serious-looking men.
Security experts.
Private investigators.
People who looked like they had handled dangerous situations before.
Dominic stood at the front.
“Review everything.””
A large screen showed camera footage.
The mansion.
The gates.
The halls.
Every angle.
A security officer spoke.
“No forced entry.””
“Impossible,” Dominic said.
“We checked everything.””
“Then someone let them in.””
Silence.
Everyone understood what that meant.
An inside job.
Claire watched the room carefully.
One by one, she studied the reactions.
Some looked shocked.
Some looked angry.
Some looked afraid.
Then she noticed someone.
A man standing near the back.
He wasn’t reacting.
Not because he was calm.
Because he already knew.
His name was Victor Moretti.
Dominic’s longtime business advisor.
Claire had seen him before.
Always nearby.
Always trusted.
Always present.
Victor noticed her watching.
He smiled.
A polite smile.
The kind powerful people used when they wanted you to feel small.
“Ms. Beaumont,” he said.
Everyone looked at her.
“Yes?””
“I hear you are the new miracle worker.””
Claire smiled slightly.
“I don’t think that’s accurate.””
Victor chuckled.
“Twenty-two nannies failed. You lasted two days.””
“I’m still here.””
“That is impressive.””
The words sounded like a compliment.
But Claire felt something underneath.
A warning.
Dominic stepped between them.
“That’s enough.””
Victor looked at him.
“Of course.””
The meeting continued.
But Claire’s attention stayed on Victor.
Because she had learned something important.
People who were innocent usually wanted to prove it.
People who were guilty usually wanted to appear normal.
And Victor Moretti looked very normal.
Almost too normal.
Later that night, Claire returned to her room.
She found something waiting on her bed.
A small envelope.
No name.
No message.
Her heart immediately started beating faster.
She opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A picture of Dominic’s wife.
Standing beside the three boys.
On the back, there were five words.
*Leave before you become next.*
Claire stared at the message.
For a moment, fear took over.
She thought about Rosie.
Her daughter.
The reason she had accepted this job.
The reason she could not afford to take risks.
She should leave.
Any reasonable person would.
A normal person would pack their things.
Return home.
Forget the Valtieris.
But then she remembered Adrian’s face.
The way he held the box.
The way he asked without speaking if she would stay.
And Claire knew something.
She had spent her life fighting for people who had no one else.
That was who she was.
So she folded the note.
Placed it back in the envelope.
And walked out of her room.
She went straight to Dominic’s office.
He looked up when she entered.
“What happened?””
Claire placed the photograph on his desk.
His expression changed instantly.
“Where did you get this?””
“My room.””
The billionaire stood.
For the first time, he looked completely shaken.
“Impossible.””
Claire watched him carefully.
“You said nobody could enter.””
“No one can.””
She nodded.
“Then someone inside your security system helped them.””
Dominic stared at the photograph.
Then at Claire.
“You need to leave.””
The answer surprised her.
“You’re telling me to leave?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because they are coming after anyone close to me.””
Claire looked at him.
“Then why did you hire me?””
Silence.
A painful silence.
Finally, Dominic answered:
“Because my sons needed someone.””
Claire softened.
“Then I’m not leaving.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand the danger.””
“No.””
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward the rooms where three boys were sleeping.
“But I understand children.””
Dominic said nothing.
Claire stepped closer.
“And your sons have spent their entire lives watching people leave.””
A pause.
“I won’t be another person who walks away.””
For several seconds, Dominic simply stared at her.
Then something unexpected happened.
The billionaire who trusted almost nobody said quietly:
“Then you need to know the truth.””
Claire waited.
Dominic looked at the photograph.
“The night my wife died…”
His voice became heavier.
“She wasn’t killed because of me.””
Claire listened.
“She was killed because she discovered who was betraying our family.””
The room went cold.
“Who?””
Dominic looked directly at her.
“The person who raised my children when I wasn’t there.””
Claire felt her stomach drop.
“Are you saying…”
Dominic’s voice was almost a whisper.
“The enemy was never outside this house.””
May you like
He looked toward the hallway.
“It was inside from the beginning.””
