Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Scar
Claire Beaumont had learned a rule during her years of struggling.
When someone told you not to ask questions, that was usually when you needed the answers the most.
And after what Adrian had told her, she could not stop thinking about one thing.
“The person closest to us.””
Those words followed her everywhere.
Through the halls.
Through breakfast.
Through the quiet moments when the mansion seemed too large for the number of people inside it.
Someone inside the Valtieri world had hurt them.
Someone trusted.
Someone close.
But Claire knew better than to start accusing people without proof.
She had learned that lesson the hard way.
Years ago, when she was younger and more reckless, she believed truth always protected good people.
Life had taught her differently.
Sometimes truth destroyed lives before it saved them.
So she watched.
And she waited.
The next morning, she woke before sunrise.
Not because she wanted to.
Because she was used to it.
Years of raising Rosie alone had trained her body to wake at impossible hours.
Five a.m.
Six a.m.
Anytime her daughter needed her.
Claire quietly walked downstairs expecting an empty kitchen.
Instead, she found Dominic Valtieri already there.
He stood near the window with a cup of black coffee in his hand.
No suit jacket.
No tie.
Just a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
For the first time, Claire saw something different.
Not the billionaire.
Not the feared businessman.
Just a tired man who had not slept.
He noticed her immediately.
“You wake early.””
Claire stopped.
“So do you.””
A small silence passed.
Most people would have apologized.
Most people would have looked away.
Claire did neither.
Dominic studied her.
“You always answer questions with questions?””
“Only when people ask questions they already know the answer to.””
His expression remained unreadable.
“You’re comfortable here.””
Claire almost laughed.
“Comfortable?””
She looked around the enormous kitchen.
“I have spent most of my life worrying about whether my electricity would stay on.””
Her eyes met his.
“This place makes me uncomfortable.””
For some reason, that answer seemed to interest him.
“Yet you stayed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked toward the staircase.
“Because your sons need someone.””
Dominic’s face hardened slightly.
“They have everything.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But it hit harder than anger.
“They have everything money can buy.””
She paused.
“That’s not the same thing.””
Dominic looked away.
For a moment, Claire thought she saw pain.
But then it disappeared.
“You don’t know anything about this family.””
“That’s true.””
She poured herself coffee.
“But I know children.””
“Do you?””
The question sounded almost challenging.
Claire looked at him.
“I have a daughter.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised her.
“You checked my background?””
“I check everyone.””
Of course he did.
Dominic Valtieri did not become a billionaire by trusting strangers.
Claire leaned against the counter.
“And what did you find?””
“That you work too much.””
“Fair.””
“That you have no criminal record.””
“Also fair.””
“That you refused financial help from your previous employer.””
Claire shrugged.
“I didn’t earn it.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You turned down money when you needed it.””
“I turned down charity.””
“You were struggling.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked down at her coffee.
“Because needing help and wanting to be owned are two different things.””
That answer stayed between them.
Dominic looked at her longer than necessary.
Then footsteps interrupted.
Three boys entered the kitchen.
The change was immediate.
Dominic became colder.
The boys became quieter.
Claire noticed.
The entire atmosphere changed when he appeared.
Not because they disliked him.
Because they feared disappointing him.
“Breakfast,” Dominic said.
The boys sat.
No fighting.
No throwing food.
No screaming.
The staff watching from the doorway looked shocked.
Claire almost smiled.
She knew something important had happened.
Not because she had fixed anything.
But because the boys had made a choice.
They chose trust.
Even if it was only a tiny amount.
After breakfast, Claire decided to test something.
“Today we’re going outside.””
Three heads immediately turned.
“No,” Luca said.
“No?”” Claire repeated.
“We don’t go outside.””
“Why?””
Matteo looked uncomfortable.
“Because people watch.””
Claire looked at Dominic.
He was standing near the doorway.
Watching.
Listening.
“Is that true?”” she asked.
Nobody answered.
Dominic finally spoke.
“Yes.””
Claire looked surprised.
“You admit it?””
“I don’t lie to my employees.””
“Employees?””
His expression changed.
A reminder.
She was not family.
She was hired.
Claire ignored the sting.
“Who watches them?””
Dominic’s eyes became colder.
“That’s not your concern.””
Claire crossed her arms.
“It became my concern when you hired me.””
The room went silent.
Elena, standing nearby, looked like she expected an explosion.
But Dominic did something unexpected.
He walked away.
He did not argue.
He did not threaten.
He simply said:
“Take security.””
Then he left.
Claire looked at the boys.
“Well.””
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
“Well what?””
“I think your father just agreed with me.””
The three boys looked genuinely confused.
Because apparently, nobody ever won arguments with Dominic Valtieri.
The garden was enormous.
Trees.
Flowers.
A private walking path.
The kind of place children should have loved.
But the triplets moved carefully.
Always looking around.
Always watching.
Claire noticed Adrian touching the scar above his eyebrow.
She had seen him do it several times.
Whenever he was nervous.
Whenever something reminded him of the past.
She walked beside him.
“How did you get that scar?””
Immediately, the boys became quiet.
Claire almost apologized.
Then Adrian answered.
“An accident.””
Claire looked at him.
“What kind?””
He looked away.
“A bad one.””
She knew that was not the whole truth.
But she didn’t push.
Not yet.
Instead, she sat on the grass.
The boys stared.
“What are you doing?”” Matteo asked.
“Sitting.””
“On the ground?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire smiled.
“Because sometimes adults forget they are allowed to.””
The boys slowly sat too.
For ten minutes, nothing happened.
No arguments.
No disasters.
Just three children sitting outside.
Then a sound cut through the peaceful moment.
A loud crack.
Like something breaking.
Security immediately moved.
The guards surrounded them.
The boys dropped instantly.
Not because they were told.
Because they were trained.
Claire’s heart tightened.
This was not normal fear.
This was survival.
“Down!”” one guard shouted.
Claire moved toward the boys.
She covered them.
A second later, everyone realized the sound had come from a fallen tree branch.
Nothing more.
But the damage was done.
The boys were shaking.
Adrian’s breathing became fast.
Claire held his shoulder.
“Look at me.””
He couldn’t.
“Adrian.””
Slowly, his eyes met hers.
“You’re here.””
He said nothing.
“You’re in the garden.””
His breathing slowed.
“The sound is gone.””
A few moments passed.
Then he whispered:
“That’s what happened with Mom.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
Adrian swallowed.
“She heard something outside.””
The other boys looked at him.
Like they were afraid he was saying too much.
“She went to check.””
His fingers touched the scar.
“I followed her.””
Claire’s voice softened.
“What happened?””
Adrian looked toward the mansion.
“When I found her, she was on the floor.””
Nobody moved.
“She told me to run.””
Claire felt a chill.
“From who?””
Adrian’s eyes filled with fear.
But not for himself.
For his brothers.
“I don’t know.””
That answer broke Claire’s heart.
Because children should not carry mysteries like that.
They should carry toys.
Books.
Dreams.
Not memories of violence.
That evening, Dominic found Claire alone in the hallway.
“You asked about the scar.””
It wasn’t a question.
Claire turned.
“Yes.””
“You should not.””
“Why?””
“Because some answers are dangerous.””
Claire studied him.
“Do you know how he got it?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
Dominic knew.
Claire stepped closer.
“Your son is eight years old.””
“I know.””
“He remembers something terrible.””
“I know.””
“Then why is nobody helping him?””
Something changed.
For the first time, Dominic looked angry.
Not at her.
At himself.
“You think I haven’t tried?””
His voice dropped.
“You think I don’t wake up every night wondering what I missed?””
Claire stopped.
The emotion in his voice surprised her.
Dominic turned away.
“My wife was murdered.””
The hallway became silent.
Claire had suspected.
But hearing it was different.
“I’m sorry.””
“I don’t need your sympathy.””
“I know.””
He looked at her.
“Then why say it?””
“Because losing someone hurts.””
A pause.
“And because pretending it doesn’t only makes it worse.””
Dominic looked at her.
Really looked.
Then he said something she never expected.
“The police never found who did it.””
Claire frowned.
“Never?””
“No.””
“And you have no idea?””
His silence answered.
Then Dominic whispered:
“I have an idea.””
The temperature in the hallway seemed to drop.
“Who?””
Dominic looked toward the staircase where his sons had disappeared moments before.
“The person who betrayed us.””
Claire waited.
But he said no more.
And that was when she realized something terrifying.
Dominic Valtieri wasn’t protecting his sons from the outside world.
He was protecting them from someone who was already inside.
Someone who knew their routines.
Someone who knew their weaknesses.
Someone who had access to everything.
And as Claire stood in that mansion, she understood the truth.
The triplets were not dangerous because they were cruel.
May you like
They were dangerous because they knew a secret powerful people wanted buried.
And now Claire knew enough to become a target too.
