Chapter 7: The Room Beneath the House
Luca stared at the tiny pink shoe lying in the hallway.
For one terrible second, the world became silent.
No alarms.
No footsteps.
No voices.
Only that shoe.
Maya's shoe.
The left sole had been separating from the toe when she first came through the hedge.
Now it lay abandoned beneath the flickering emergency light.
“Lock the building,” Luca said.
Marco was already moving.
“Every exit?””
“Every exit.””
“She's already gone.””
“I know.””
Marco looked at the elevator.
The doors had closed less than twenty seconds earlier.
He ran toward it.
Luca followed as quickly as his chair would allow.
The elevator display showed the car descending.
Four.
Three.
Two.
Basement.
Marco pressed the call button.
Nothing.
“There's a service shaft,” he said.
Luca looked at him.
“Can we get there?””
“Not from here.””
“Then break through.””
Marco grabbed a fire extinguisher and smashed the emergency panel.
The elevator cables groaned somewhere below.
Luca's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
“Where is she?””
A child's breathing came through the line.
Then Maya's voice.
“Mr. Costello?””
Luca closed his eyes for a second.
“Maya.””
“I'm okay.””
“Where are you?””
“I don't know.””
Luca heard movement in the background.
A man's voice.
“Tell him.””
Maya's breathing quickened.
“Mr. Costello, they want you to go home.””
“Who?””
“The woman.””
Luca's stomach dropped.
“Helena?””
Maya didn't answer.
Instead, the man said, “The study.””
The call ended.
Luca lowered the phone.
Marco looked at him.
“What did they say?””
“Go home.””
“That's it?””
“They want me in the study.””
Marco stared at him.
“That makes no sense.””
Luca thought about Adrian's words.
The room beneath the house.
Your father left you something there.
The truth about why you were chosen.
He looked toward the hallway.
“It's not about me.””
“What?””
“It's about what's under the house.””
Marco understood.
“We go now.””
The return to the estate took twelve minutes.
Luca spent every second staring through the windshield.
The rain had stopped.
Fog covered the road.
His hands were steady.
His mind was not.
He kept hearing Maya's voice.
I'm okay.
Two words.
Children shouldn't have to sound brave while someone is holding them hostage.
At the estate, the gates stood open.
No guards.
No lights.
No movement.
Marco drew his weapon.
“Stay behind me.””
Luca rolled through the entrance.
The house was dark.
The massive chandelier in the foyer hung motionless overhead.
Every painting seemed to watch them.
Every hallway looked longer than it had that morning.
Then Luca noticed something.
The grandfather clock.
Its hands had stopped at eleven forty-three.
The exact time of his accident.
Luca stopped.
“Marco.””
“Yes?””
“Who reset the clock?””
Marco stared.
“I don't know.””
Luca moved toward it.
The clock had been in the house since his father was alive.
It had never worked correctly.
At least, Luca had believed that.
He pressed the wooden side panel.
Nothing happened.
He pressed again.
A click.
The clock face shifted.
A hidden compartment opened behind it.
Inside was a brass lever.
Luca stared.
“That's new.””
“No,” Marco said.
“It isn't.””
Marco looked at him.
“You recognize it?””
“My father showed me this clock when I was seventeen.””
“What did he say?””
“That someday I'd understand why it mattered.””
Luca pulled the lever.
A deep mechanical rumble echoed beneath the floor.
The study bookshelf moved backward six inches.
Then stopped.
Luca stared at it.
Marco pushed.
The bookshelf swung inward.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
Moldy stone.
Old wiring.
Darkness.
“The room,” Luca whispered.
They descended.
The air became colder with every step.
At the bottom was a steel door.
A gold keyhole was set into the center.
Luca remembered the key Helena had taken.
But there was no time to wonder where it had gone.
Marco forced the door with a crowbar.
It opened.
The room beyond was enormous.
Far larger than the footprint of the house should have allowed.
A hidden archive.
Shelves covered every wall.
Boxes stacked to the ceiling.
Old contracts.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Medical files.
Shipping manifests.
Bank ledgers.
And at the center stood a desk.
His father's desk.
Luca rolled toward it.
On the surface sat a single envelope.
His name was written across it.
*LUCA.*
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
His father's.
Luca began reading.
My son,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally forced the truth into the light.
Luca's breath caught.
You will have been told that your future depends upon your strength. That our family survives because the strongest man takes control.
That is a lie.
Our family survived because men before you learned how to hide.
Luca turned the page.
The empire is not what matters.
The information is.
Years ago, I discovered that several of our legitimate companies were being used to move money, influence contracts, and manipulate political and commercial decisions. I confronted the people responsible.
They offered me a choice.
Hand over control.
Or lose my family.
Luca's hand tightened.
The next line was underlined.
I refused.
A noise came from behind the shelves.
Luca stopped reading.
Marco raised his weapon.
“Who's there?””
Nothing.
Then a voice answered.
“Me.””
Adrian stepped from behind a row of boxes.
He looked weak but conscious.
Luca stared.
“You're supposed to be resting.””
“I've spent twelve years resting.””
Adrian limped toward them.
“I'm done.””
Luca looked at him.
“How did you get here?””
“Victor.””
“Where is he?””
“Keeping the house under surveillance.””
Luca held up the letter.
“Did you know about this?””
Adrian nodded.
“But I never read it.””
“Why?””
“Because Dad told me the room could only be opened by you.””
Luca turned toward the shelves.
“Why me?””
Adrian didn't answer.
Luca looked back.
“Tell me.””
“Because he knew they would target you.””
“Why?””
Adrian walked toward the desk.
“Because you were the one person in the family who didn't know how to keep secrets.””
Luca almost laughed.
“That sounds like an insult.””
“It wasn't.””
Adrian pointed toward the letter.
“Dad believed you would expose them.””
Luca stared.
“Then why didn't he?””
“Because he died before he could.””
The answer settled heavily over the room.
Luca looked at the rest of the letter.
Adrian knows enough to survive.
You do not.
That is why I made him promise never to tell you until the time came.
Luca looked up.
“You knew.””
Adrian nodded.
“I was nineteen.””
“You let me believe you betrayed me.””
“I let you believe I was protecting myself.””
“Why?””
“Because if they thought we trusted each other, they'd kill both of us.””
Luca looked at him for a long moment.
Then something on the desk caught his eye.
A photograph.
It showed three figures outside the house.
His father.
Helena.
And a fourth person.
Luca picked it up.
His hands stopped moving.
The fourth person was Victor Shaw.
But the date on the photograph was fifteen years before Luca's accident.
Luca stared at Adrian.
“Victor knew Dad.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Before you were born.””
Luca looked closer.
Something was written on the back.
He turned it over.
*Project Lazarus — subject selected.*
The words meant nothing.
Then he saw a second line.
*Luca Costello.*
His stomach dropped.
“What is Project Lazarus?””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“I never found out.””
“You're telling me all of this and you never found out?””
“I found fragments.””
“Where?””
Adrian pointed to a locked cabinet.
Luca rolled toward it.
Inside were medical files.
Hundreds of them.
Not only his.
Children.
Adults.
Politicians.
Executives.
Names Luca recognized.
Some had died.
Some had disappeared.
Some were still alive.
Each file contained neurological examinations, genetic information, medication records, and psychological assessments.
Luca looked sick.
“What did my father build?””
“Not this,” Adrian said.
“Then who?””
Adrian opened one file.
“The Meridian.””
Luca looked through the documents.
“This is experimentation.””
“That's what I think.””
“You think?””
“I spent twelve years hiding. I didn't have access to the whole picture.””
Luca scanned another page.
Then he froze.
The page contained his own name.
*Neurological response greater than expected.*
He read the next line.
*Subject may retain capacity for motor recovery if treatment is discontinued.*
Luca stared.
The words blurred.
He had been able to recover.
Twelve years ago.
Maybe not completely.
Maybe not quickly.
But there had been a chance.
Someone had known.
Someone had deliberately prevented it.
A sound came from the staircase.
Footsteps.
Adrian turned.
Marco raised his gun.
A woman appeared at the entrance.
Helena Costello.
She wore a dark coat.
Her face was wet with rain.
She looked at Luca.
Then Adrian.
Then the file in Luca's hands.
Her expression broke.
“It's over.””
Luca's voice was cold.
“Where is Maya?””
Helena said nothing.
“Where is she?””
“You don't understand.””
“I understand enough.””
Helena looked at Adrian.
“You were supposed to stay hidden.””
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“You were supposed to be dead.””
Helena closed her eyes.
Luca moved toward her.
“Why did you do this?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“My husband.””
“Your husband was my uncle.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“He was a monster.””
Luca stared.
Helena continued.
“Your father wasn't fighting The Meridian.””
Silence.
“He was part of it.””
Luca's world seemed to stop.
Adrian whispered, “Mom…”
Helena looked at him.
“I tried to get you both out.””
Luca shook his head.
“You ordered the accident.””
“I ordered the sabotage.””
Adrian stepped forward.
Helena began crying.
“I thought it would frighten you into giving up control.””
Luca's expression hardened.
“You destroyed my life.””
“I know.””
“And Adrian?””
“I thought they killed him.””
“You knew.””
“No.””
She wiped her face.
“I found out years later.””
“Then why keep pretending?””
“Because by then they were watching every move I made.””
Luca looked toward the door.
“Maya.””
Helena's face changed.
“She wasn't supposed to be involved.””
“Where is she?””
“With someone you trust.””
Luca stared.
“Who?””
Helena didn't answer.
A gunshot echoed from somewhere above them.
Marco looked toward the stairs.
Then another.
Adrian grabbed Luca's chair.
“Someone found us.””
Helena backed away.
“No.””
Luca looked at her.
“Who?””
She whispered a name.
“Richard Bell.””
Luca froze.
The attorney.
The man who had worked beside him for twelve years.
The man who had been inside his bedroom.
The man who had access to every legal document, every account, every secret.
Helena looked directly at Luca.
“He was never working for us.””
A phone rang in the darkness.
Luca answered.
Richard's voice came through calmly.
“Mr. Costello.””
Luca's eyes hardened.
“Where is Maya?””
Richard laughed softly.
“She's exactly where she needs to be.””
“Tell me.””
“You've spent twelve years asking why you couldn't walk.””
Luca said nothing.
Richard continued.
“Tonight, you finally get your answer.””
A pause.
“But the answer comes with a choice.””
Luca's grip tightened around the phone.
“What choice?””
Richard's voice became almost gentle.
“Your empire…”
Another pause.
“Or the little girl.””
The call ended.
Luca looked at Adrian.
Then at Helena.
Then at the files bearing his own name.
May you like
For twelve years, someone had controlled the story of his life.
Tonight, they had finally given him a chance to control how it ended.
