Chapter 5: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Luca stopped breathing.
For twelve years, he had carried one image of his brother into every nightmare: Adrian lying motionless beneath the white hospital sheets, his face pale, his lips blue, a doctor standing beside him telling Luca there had been nothing anyone could do.
That image had become sacred.
It was the last thing Luca had allowed himself to remember without questioning it.
Now a man stood at the bottom of the underground passage with Adrian's eyes.
Not similar eyes.
Not eyes that reminded Luca of him.
Adrian's eyes.
The same dark brown.
The same slight crease beneath the left eye.
The same habit of tilting his head when he was trying to determine whether someone was lying.
Luca's hand slipped from the wheel.
“No.””
The man took one step closer.
“Hello, Luca.””
Luca stared.
His throat refused to work.
Marco raised his weapon.
“Identify yourself.””
The man smiled.
“That depends on whether you want the truth.””
Victor Shaw stood beside him.
The doctor looked terrified.
Not of Luca.
Of the man beside him.
Luca saw it immediately.
“You,” Luca whispered.
The stranger continued upward.
He was older than Adrian had been, obviously. Twelve years had changed him.
There was gray at his temples.
A scar ran from beneath his right ear toward his jaw.
He walked with a slight limp.
But the face was unmistakable.
Luca's chest tightened.
“Adrian?””
The man stopped.
For a moment, nothing existed except the two brothers staring at each other.
Then Adrian said, “Yes.””
Luca's mind rejected the word.
His body moved before his thoughts could catch up.
He rolled forward.
Marco tried to stop him.
Luca pushed his hand away.
He moved faster.
Adrian climbed the final steps.
They were three feet apart.
Luca reached for him.
His fingers touched Adrian's face.
Warm.
Human.
Real.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Neither brother spoke.
Then Luca struck him.
The slap echoed through the tunnel.
Adrian's head turned.
Maya gasped.
Marco stared.
Luca's hand shook.
“You're alive.””
Adrian slowly looked back.
“Yes.””
“You're alive.””
“I know.””
“For twelve years.””
Adrian's eyes filled with something that looked like shame.
“Yes.””
Luca hit him again.
This time Adrian didn't move.
“You let me bury you.””
“I couldn't come back.””
“You could have called.””
“I did.””
“When?””
“More times than I can count.””
Luca stared at him.
“Then why didn't I hear you?””
Adrian looked toward Victor.
“Because every message went through him.””
Victor closed his eyes.
Luca turned toward the doctor.
“You blocked him?””
Victor swallowed.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
“You lied to me for twelve years.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victor looked at Adrian.
“Because they would have killed him.””
Luca's expression hardened.
“Who?””
No answer.
He turned back to Adrian.
“You watched me.””
“Every day.””
“You watched me believe you were dead.””
“Yes.””
“You watched me lose everything.””
Adrian's jaw trembled.
“I watched you survive.””
“You call this surviving?””
Adrian looked at Luca's wheelchair.
Something painful crossed his face.
“You're alive.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“It was the only thing that mattered.””
Luca wanted to scream.
Instead, he asked, “Why did they paralyze me?””
Adrian's expression changed.
“Because killing you was too easy.””
The warehouse seemed to grow colder.
“They needed you alive,” Adrian continued.
“Alive, angry, isolated, and dependent on people they controlled.””
“Who?””
Adrian looked toward the steel cabinet filled with evidence.
“Your father's partners.””
Luca frowned.
“My father had no partners after retirement.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That's what he wanted people to believe.””
He walked to the table and opened another folder.
Inside was a list of names.
Bankers.
Shipping executives.
Politicians.
Lawyers.
Two former police commissioners.
And several people Luca recognized as men who had helped expand his empire after his accident.
“They had been siphoning money for years,” Adrian said.
“Your father discovered it.””
Luca scanned the list.
“Helena?””
“Helena knew some of them.””
“Some?””
“Enough.””
“And Victor?””
Adrian looked at the doctor.
“Victor wasn't one of the architects.””
Luca laughed bitterly.
“That's supposed to comfort me?””
Victor spoke quietly.
“I thought your paralysis was temporary.””
Luca stared.
The doctor continued.
“Your spinal cord had suffered damage, but your tests showed responses. Very weak, but real.””
“Then why didn't I recover?””
Victor looked at Adrian.
“Because someone made sure you didn't.””
Luca's pulse hammered.
“What did they do?””
Victor hesitated.
Then he said, “They gave you medication that interfered with neurological recovery.””
Maya looked confused.
Luca didn't.
“How long?””
“Approximately six months.””
“Six months?””
Victor nodded.
“Enough to convince your body—and everyone else—that recovery was impossible.””
Luca closed his eyes.
He remembered those months.
The endless exhaustion.
The muscle weakness.
The numbness.
The doctors telling him progress required patience.
The days when he could barely remain awake.
He had believed he was failing.
He had believed his body was simply refusing to heal.
Now he understood.
Someone had been helping it fail.
Luca opened his eyes.
“Who prescribed the drugs?””
Victor answered immediately.
“I did.””
Silence.
Luca looked at him with naked hatred.
Victor didn't defend himself.
“I was threatened,” he said.
“That doesn't excuse it.””
“No.””
“What did they threaten?””
“My daughter.””
Victor's voice cracked.
“They had her.””
Luca's anger flickered.
Not sympathy.
Understanding.
“She's alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Victor has spent twelve years trying to find her.””
Luca looked at him.
“And you?””
“I found her.””
Victor looked at Adrian sharply.
“You did?””
“Six months ago.””
“Where is she?””
“Safe.””
Victor's knees nearly gave way.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she was being watched.””
Luca rubbed his forehead.
The room seemed to contain too many truths at once.
Then he remembered something.
“Maya.””
He looked around.
The girl was standing beside Elena now.
Luca's expression softened.
“Maya, did you see the symbol on the van?””
She nodded.
Adrian turned toward her.
“What symbol?””
She described it.
A crescent.
Three vertical lines.
Adrian's face changed.
“You're certain?””
“Yes.””
Adrian walked to the table.
He opened a small metal box.
Inside was a piece of black fabric carrying the same symbol.
He placed it beside Maya's description.
“That symbol belongs to a group called The Meridian.””
Marco frowned.
“I've heard the name.””
Adrian nodded.
“They don't officially exist.””
“Then why should we believe they do?””
“Because they don't need to officially exist.””
Adrian pointed to the list of names.
“They control money through shell companies, influence through intermediaries, and people through secrets.””
Luca stared at the names.
“And they wanted my empire.””
“No.””
Adrian looked directly at him.
“They wanted what your empire could give them.””
“What?””
“Access.””
“To what?””
Adrian hesitated.
“Your father's ports.””
Luca's eyes narrowed.
“My ports were just shipping operations.””
“Not all of them.””
Adrian opened a map.
Several locations were marked in red.
Luca stared.
“They connect to military contracts.””
Adrian nodded.
“Your father's company handled restricted cargo before he died.””
“Illegal cargo?””
“No.””
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Sensitive cargo.””
Luca stared at the map.
Suddenly, the empire his father had built looked different.
There had always been hidden warehouses.
Unusual clients.
Containers that were never opened by ordinary employees.
Contracts that had required government signatures.
Luca had assumed secrecy came with wealth.
Maybe it had come with something else.
Then Maya spoke.
“Mr. Costello?””
Everyone turned.
She pointed to a photograph on the table.
“This man was outside my mom's apartment.””
Luca looked.
The photograph showed a security camera image.
A dark figure standing across from Elena's building.
Luca enlarged it.
His expression changed.
It was Victor's former assistant, Daniel Reese.
A man who had died seven years earlier.
“That's impossible,” Marco whispered.
Adrian's face became grim.
“No.””
He touched the photograph.
“That's not Daniel.””
“Who is it?””
Adrian looked at Luca.
“His brother.””
Luca stared.
“Daniel had no brother.””
“He did.””
Adrian reached into his coat.
He removed an old identity card.
“Ethan Reese.””
Marco took it.
His face hardened.
“Ethan disappeared fourteen years ago.””
Adrian nodded.
“Exactly.””
The pieces were coming together.
Too quickly.
Too perfectly.
Luca looked at his brother.
“You knew all of this.””
“I knew enough.””
“You could have stopped them.””
“I tried.””
“For twelve years?””
“Yes.””
“Then why come back now?””
Adrian looked toward Maya.
“Because she found the photograph.””
Luca's eyes narrowed.
“You were watching the estate.””
“I was watching you.””
“Why?””
“Because someone inside your house has been feeding information to The Meridian.””
Marco immediately looked toward the guards.
Luca stared at him.
“You're saying there's a mole.””
“I'm saying they always knew what you were doing.””
“Then someone here talks.””
Adrian nodded.
“Someone very close.””
The lights suddenly went out.
A gunshot exploded.
Glass shattered.
Elena screamed.
Marco dragged Maya behind cover.
Luca heard a body hit the floor.
Emergency lights flickered red.
Adrian grabbed Luca's chair and pushed him behind a concrete pillar.
“Stay down.””
Luca shouted, “Who fired?””
No answer.
Then a second shot.
Adrian moved toward the sound.
Luca grabbed his arm.
“Don't.””
Adrian looked at him.
For a second, they were boys again.
Brothers.
Not enemies.
Not ghosts.
Brothers.
Then the warehouse doors slammed open.
A dozen armed men flooded inside.
Marco returned fire.
Chaos erupted.
Luca looked through the red emergency light.
One of the attackers raised his weapon.
Not at him.
At Maya.
Luca shouted.
Adrian moved.
He stepped between the gun and the child.
The shot cracked.
Adrian fell.
“Adrian!””
Luca pushed forward.
Blood spread across Adrian's shirt.
Maya screamed.
Marco eliminated the shooter.
The remaining attackers disappeared into the tunnels.
Luca reached his brother.
“Stay with me.””
Adrian's fingers closed around Luca's wrist.
“Listen.””
“Don't talk.””
“Luca.””
“Stop.””
Adrian forced the words out.
“The person inside your house…”
Luca leaned closer.
“Who?””
Adrian's eyes lost focus.
“He's not one of your men.””
Luca froze.
“Then who?””
Adrian's lips moved.
“Your family.””
Then his eyes closed.
Luca looked toward the blood beneath his brother.
For twelve years, he had mourned Adrian.
May you like
Now, after five minutes of having him back, Luca was forced to confront the possibility of losing him again.
And somewhere above them, inside the Costello estate, someone who had been hiding for twelve years was already preparing the next move.
