Chapter 18: The Man Who Owned Their Lives
The hostage was Daniel Reeves.
The real Daniel.
Thomas listened to the radio report twice.
“Are you certain it's him?””
The officer answered:
“Positive. We confirmed his identity using archived fingerprints.””
Walter looked at Nancy.
“Daniel is alive.””
Thomas nodded.
“But Richard has him.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Where are they taking him?””
“County courthouse,” Thomas replied.
“Richard has demanded a meeting with the district attorney.””
Mack frowned.
“Why would he go to the courthouse?””
Thomas's expression darkened.
“Because he believes he still has enough influence to make this disappear.””
Walter shook his head.
“He wants the original registry.””
Thomas nodded.
“And he knows we have it.””
Nancy looked at Michael.
“Are you coming with us?””
Michael hesitated.
He looked at Walter.
Then at Nancy.
“I don't know if I'm ready to be part of this family.””
Nancy took his hand.
“You don't have to decide that today.””
Michael looked down at their hands.
Then he nodded.
“I'm coming.””
At 11:35 a.m., the courthouse was surrounded by police vehicles.
Reporters gathered outside.
Richard Cole stood near the entrance with Daniel Reeves beside him.
Daniel's hands were tied.
His face was bruised.
Richard held a folder against his chest.
He looked calm.
Almost bored.
When Walter stepped out of Thomas's vehicle, Richard smiled.
“Well, look who's alive.””
Walter walked toward him.
“Let Daniel go.””
Richard glanced at Nancy.
“Still protecting everyone, Walter? Even after all these years?””
Nancy stepped forward.
“You took our son.””
Richard's smile faded.
“I gave him a home.””
“You stole him from us.””
“He had a better life than you could have provided.””
Walter's voice hardened.
“You don't get to decide that.””
Richard shrugged.
“Your little diner was failing. Your family was struggling. I offered you money.””
“You offered me silence.””
“And you refused.””
Richard looked at Michael.
Then his expression changed.
“Matthew.””
Michael stepped forward.
“My name is Michael Miller.””
Richard laughed.
“That's what they told you?””
Michael held up the guardianship document.
“I know what you did.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Do you?””
He turned toward Thomas.
“Let's make this simple. You give me the original registry, and Daniel walks away.””
Thomas shook his head.
“That's not happening.””
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were several signed statements.
“Then perhaps the district attorney would like to see what your people have been hiding.””
Thomas looked at the papers.
His face tightened.
“What is this?””
“Evidence that Thomas Hale accepted money from Walter Miller to conceal the original crash investigation.””
Nancy stared.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“Your loyal friend isn't quite as loyal as you think.””
Walter turned toward Thomas.
Thomas remained still.
“That's a forged statement,” he said.
Richard shrugged.
“Prove it.””
Then Daniel spoke.
“It's not forged.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked directly at Thomas.
“Thomas did take money.””
Nancy felt her stomach drop.
Walter stared at him.
“Daniel?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“Six years ago, Thomas accepted payment from Richard to close the investigation into the crash.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Daniel, you don't know what you're talking about.””
“I know exactly what I'm talking about.””
Daniel looked at Nancy.
“I'm sorry.””
Walter's face hardened.
“You told us you were trying to help.””
“I was.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel took a breath.
“When Walter's truck went over the embankment, I found him alive. Mack pulled him out, but Walter was badly injured. I took him to a private clinic.””
Mack looked at him.
“I thought Thomas arranged that.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. I did.””
Walter stared.
“Why?””
“Because Richard's men were searching every hospital. I needed someone to hide Walter.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“And I was the one who made sure the official investigation ended.””
Nancy looked at him.
“You helped cover up my husband's death?””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I was threatened. Richard had evidence that could destroy my career. I believed if I delayed the investigation, I could protect Walter until he recovered.””
Walter's voice was cold.
“You let Nancy bury me.””
Thomas looked devastated.
“I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””
Nancy shook her head.
“Everyone made that decision for us. Everyone decided what we could survive.””
Richard laughed.
“Beautiful, isn't it? All these people claiming they were protecting you.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Why did you keep me?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because you were useful.””
Michael's expression hardened.
“You could have let me go.””
“You were the only thing Walter couldn't risk losing.””
Walter lunged toward him.
Thomas held him back.
Richard smiled.
“That's why I knew he would eventually come out of hiding.””
Daniel suddenly twisted his hands.
The rope loosened.
He struck Richard's arm.
The folder fell.
A gun dropped from inside it.
Officers shouted.
Richard grabbed Daniel and shoved him toward the courthouse doors.
Mack moved.
Walter followed.
Nancy screamed.
A gunshot echoed.
Everyone froze.
Daniel fell to the ground.
Richard ran inside.
Thomas rushed toward Daniel.
“Get medical assistance!””
Michael stood beside Nancy.
“Dad!””
Walter turned.
But Richard had already disappeared through the courthouse entrance.
Inside, the building was chaos.
Officers ran through the corridors.
A clerk shouted that Richard had entered the records archive.
Thomas followed.
Mack and Walter moved behind him.
Nancy stayed with Michael and Daniel.
Daniel's shoulder was bleeding, but he was conscious.
“Where's Richard going?”” Nancy asked.
Daniel grimaced.
“Basement.””
“Why?””
“There's a secure records room. He keeps copies of everything there.””
Michael looked at the folder on the floor.
He picked it up.
Inside was a list of names.
Property owners.
Judges.
Investigators.
Hospital administrators.
And beside each name was a payment amount.
Nancy recognized one name immediately.
Dr. Samuel Bennett.
Another was Brad Dawson.
Then she saw the final entry.
*Thomas Hale — $75,000.*
Nancy looked at Daniel.
“Did Thomas really take the money?””
Daniel nodded.
“But he returned it.””
“When?””
“After Walter disappeared. He couldn't live with what he'd done.””
Nancy looked toward the basement entrance.
A loud crash came from below.
Then Thomas's voice echoed through the stairwell.
“Richard! Drop the weapon!””
A second gunshot followed.
Michael grabbed Nancy's hand.
They ran toward the stairs.
At the bottom, they found Thomas standing outside the records room.
Mack was beside him.
Walter was on the floor, holding his side.
Richard stood inside the room with a gun pointed at him.
Nancy screamed.
“Walter!””
Richard looked up.
His smile returned.
“There's the woman who started all this.””
Nancy stepped forward.
“Let him go.””
Richard shook his head.
“You've caused me six years of trouble.””
Michael moved beside her.
“You're finished.””
Richard looked at him.
“You think these people are your family?””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
Richard laughed.
“Then ask them why they never came looking for you.””
Michael froze.
Richard lowered his gun slightly.
“Ask your father why he stopped searching.””
Walter struggled to sit up.
Nancy looked at him.
“Walter?””
Richard smiled.
“Tell him.””
Walter's face was pale.
His voice trembled.
“Michael, I did search.””
Richard shook his head.
“Not after the first year.””
Walter closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“Because I received a letter saying you were dead.””
Michael stared.
“What letter?””
Walter looked toward Nancy.
“It had your signature.””
Richard's smile widened.
“And I still have the original.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
Michael looked at it.
Then he began to shake.
May you like
Because the signature at the bottom was unmistakably his.
And the date was from a time when he was only seven years old.
