Eight Paychecks for the Past / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Wheel

Brad's voice echoed through the motel corridor.

“Walter! Open the door!””

Nancy stood frozen beside her husband.

The man who had humiliated her at the diner.

The man who had laughed about her husband's truck.

The man who had reduced her work schedule because she needed eight more paychecks.

He had been there on the night Walter disappeared.

Walter took a slow breath.

“Don't open it.””

Mack moved toward the bathroom window.

“There's a back exit. We can get him out through there.””

Thomas was already calling the investigators.

“I'm two minutes away,” he said.

“Do not engage unless necessary.””

Outside, Brad struck the door again.

“I'm not asking twice!””

Walter leaned toward Nancy.

“Sweetheart, I need you to listen.””

“Not now.””

“Please.””

She looked at him.

“After six years, you don't get to tell me to wait.””

Walter nodded.

“Then I'll be quick.””

He took her hand.

“Brad was twenty-eight when Richard recruited him. He drove the SUV that followed me to mile marker 214. He was supposed to scare me into handing over the documents.””

Nancy stared.

“But you told me he was driving the other vehicle.””

“He was.””

“Then how did you survive?””

Walter glanced at Mack.

“Mack got there before the second vehicle arrived.””

Nancy turned.

“What?””

Mack looked away.

Walter continued.

“Mack pulled me out of the truck before the fire reached the fuel line. But he couldn't stay. Richard's men were coming.””

Nancy stared at Mack.

“You saved my husband?””

Mack nodded.

“I got him out. Daniel was already gone.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Mack looked at the floor.

“Because Walter begged me not to.””

Nancy turned back to Walter.

“You were rescued by Mack, and then you disappeared?””

Walter nodded.

“I was taken somewhere safe. I needed time to recover. But Richard had people watching your house. I couldn't risk contacting you.””

A heavy blow struck the door.

“Last chance!”” Brad shouted.

Mack moved toward the back window.

“Time's up.””

Walter grabbed the metal key and handed it to Nancy.

“Keep this.””

She closed her fingers around it.

Then he looked toward the door.

“Brad!””

The shouting stopped.

“Remember me?””

A pause.

Then Brad laughed.

“Of course I remember you.””

Walter's jaw tightened.

“You left me to die.””

“You were supposed to die.””

Nancy felt her stomach twist.

Brad continued.

“And now you're making a very expensive mistake.””

Walter stepped toward the door.

Mack grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

But Walter raised his voice.

“You spent six years letting my wife believe I was dead.””

Brad laughed again.

“Your wife? The old waitress?””

Nancy's expression changed.

Walter looked at her.

Then he smiled sadly.

“That's my Nancy.””

Brad slammed his fist against the door.

“Enough!””

A loud crash followed.

The doorframe splintered.

Mack pushed Walter toward the bathroom.

“Go!””

Nancy refused to move.

“I'm not leaving him.””

Walter took her hand.

“Then stay close.””

The door burst open.

Brad entered with two men.

His expensive jacket was wet from the rain.

He held a metal flashlight.

His eyes immediately found Walter.

For a moment, his face went completely blank.

Then he laughed.

“Well, look who's back.””

Walter stood beside Nancy.

“Brad.””

Brad stepped forward.

“You should've stayed dead.””

Mack moved between them.

“Take another step and you'll regret it.””

Brad looked at him.

“Still playing hero?””

One of his men reached into his jacket.

Mack immediately raised his hands.

“Don't.””

The man froze.

Brad looked toward Nancy.

“Give me the key.””

Nancy tightened her fist.

“What key?””

“The one Walter gave you.””

Walter stepped forward.

“Leave her alone.””

Brad smiled.

“You still don't understand, do you? That truck isn't worth anything. The key is.””

Mack glanced toward Walter.

Walter's expression changed.

He had just realized something.

Brad knew about the hidden compartment.

But there was no way he could know about it unless someone had told him.

Walter turned toward Nancy.

“Did anyone know you had the truck?””

Nancy thought quickly.

“Brad knew I was trying to get it back.””

“Who else?””

She remembered the towing yard.

The manager.

The paperwork.

Then she remembered something else.

A phone call she had received three days earlier.

Someone claiming to be from Riverside Recovery had asked her to confirm her husband's full name and date of death.

She had answered without thinking.

Walter noticed her expression.

“What?””

“I gave someone your date of death.””

Brad laughed.

“Thank you, Mrs. Miller.””

Nancy looked at him.

“You called me?””

Brad smiled.

“People are surprisingly helpful when you ask nicely.””

Walter's face darkened.

“You used my wife's grief to find the truck.””

Brad shrugged.

“Everyone has a price.””

Nancy stepped forward.

“Not everyone.””

Brad looked at her.

“You're an old woman who washes dishes for minimum wage. Don't pretend you're some kind of hero.””

Nancy stared at him.

“I'm seventy-two years old. I've buried a husband, raised a daughter, worked through pain, and survived people like you.””

She held up the key.

“You think this is about money?””

Brad's smile disappeared.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

He lunged.

Mack moved first.

He knocked Brad's arm aside, sending the flashlight clattering across the floor.

One of the other men rushed forward.

Walter grabbed a chair and shoved it between them.

Thomas's voice suddenly rang from the doorway.

“POLICE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!””

Two investigators entered.

Brad froze.

One man dropped to his knees.

The other attempted to run through the bathroom window but was immediately intercepted.

Thomas approached Brad.

“Brad Dawson, you're being detained in connection with the attempted assault, evidence tampering, and the investigation into the death of Walter Miller.””

Brad laughed nervously.

“You can't prove anything.””

Walter stepped forward.

“I can.””

He looked directly at Brad.

“You told me six years ago that nobody would believe a dead man.””

Brad's expression changed.

Walter continued.

“But I'm standing right here.””

Thomas placed handcuffs on Brad.

For the first time, the manager who had ordered a seventy-two-year-old woman to stand up had nothing to say.

An hour later, the group gathered outside the motel.

The rain had stopped.

Nancy sat beside Walter in the back of Thomas's vehicle.

She held his hand beneath the blanket covering his knees.

“Where are we going?”” she asked.

“To get the truck,” Mack replied.

Walter shook his head.

“Not yet.””

Nancy looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because the key opens the compartment, but there's another problem.””

“What problem?””

Walter reached into his jacket and removed a folded photograph.

It showed the blue Ford parked beside an old wooden bridge.

On the back were three words:

Not the real compartment.

Nancy frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Walter looked at Mack.

Mack's expression darkened.

Then Walter revealed the truth.

“The compartment beneath the spare tire is a decoy. The original registry is hidden somewhere nobody would ever think to look.””

Nancy stared.

“Where?””

Walter took her hand and pointed toward the photograph.

“Inside the diner.””

Mack slowly turned.

“The Maple Street Diner?””

Walter nodded.

“Under the floorboards.””

Nancy remembered the old storage room behind the kitchen.

The room Brad had forbidden her to enter.

The room where she had once found a loose wooden panel and been told never to touch it.

Her heart began pounding.

“Walter, why would you hide something there?””

He looked at her.

“Because Richard owned that building before you started working there.””

Nancy went pale.

Then Walter said something that made her understand why Brad had been so determined to keep her working in that diner.

“He didn't hire you because he needed a waitress, Nancy.””

Walter squeezed her hand.

May you like

“He hired you because he thought you'd eventually find what I left beneath the floor.””

*And tomorrow morning, the diner was scheduled for demolition.*
