Chapter 7: The Memory Emma Buried Seven Years Ago

The drive back to the hospital felt endless.

Every red light felt like a warning.

Every second felt like a chance Daniel had to do something worse.

Rachel sat in the passenger seat, clutching the folder of evidence against her chest.

She hadn’t said a word since Daniel’s call.

Neither had I.

Because we were both thinking the same thing.

How much of Emma’s life had been controlled by him?

And how much of the truth had she been forced to forget?

I called the hospital again.

Still no answer.

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

“Claire.””

Rachel’s voice was quiet.

“He wanted you to panic.””

I glanced at her.

“What?””

“Daniel.””

She looked out the window.

“He knows exactly what he’s doing.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You know he manipulates people.””

I stayed silent.

“But you still think he acts emotionally.””

I looked at her.

“He doesn’t.””

Rachel’s voice hardened.

“He plans.””

That word stayed with me.

Plans.

Daniel didn’t react.

He calculated.

He didn’t lose control.

He created situations where everyone else lost theirs.

And now he had called me because he wanted me afraid.

But why?

What did he think I would find?

When we arrived at the hospital, I was out of the car before Rachel had even opened her door.

I ran inside.

“Emma Mercer’s room?””

The nurse looked up.

“Family?””

“Yes.””

Her expression changed slightly.

“She was moved.””

My heart dropped.

“Moved where?””

“She requested a private room.””

“Who approved that?””

The nurse checked the computer.

“Her husband.””

Everything inside me went cold.

“Her husband?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About twenty minutes ago.””

Twenty minutes.

Exactly after Daniel called.

I turned toward the elevator.

Rachel followed.

“He’s here.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

The elevator doors opened.

We stepped inside.

Neither of us spoke.

When the doors opened on the second floor, I immediately saw him.

Daniel stood outside a room.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Like he belonged there.

Like he wasn’t the reason my sister was in the hospital.

Like he hadn’t spent the last twenty-four hours destroying everything around him.

His eyes moved toward me.

Then Rachel.

And for the first time…

I saw genuine fear.

Not because of me.

Because of her.

“You.””

Rachel froze.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You’re alive.””

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“Disappointed?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped between them.

“Where is Emma?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She needs space.””

I almost laughed.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

“She’s my wife.””

“Not your property.””

His jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I moved closer.

“Funny.””

I looked at Rachel.

“She said the same thing about you.””

Something flashed in his eyes.

Anger.

Real anger.

For a moment, the mask slipped.

Then it returned.

“You believe her?””

“I believe evidence.””

“Evidence?””

He smiled.

“You think a few documents make you understand my life?””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“I think your actions do.””

Before he could respond, the door behind him opened.

Emma stood there.

She looked pale.

But she was standing.

My first instinct was relief.

My second was fear.

Because the expression on her face wasn’t confusion.

It was recognition.

She was looking at Rachel.

And she knew exactly who she was.

“Emma?””

Her eyes stayed on Rachel.

“No.””

Rachel stepped forward slowly.

“Emma…”

My sister shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel immediately moved closer to her.

“You see?””

His voice was soft.

“She’s scared of her.””

I looked at Emma.

But something was wrong.

Not fear of Rachel.

Something else.

A memory.

A painful one.

“Emma,” I said gently.

“Tell me what you remember.””

Her breathing became uneven.

Daniel interrupted.

“She’s tired.””

I turned sharply.

“No one asked you.””

Emma closed her eyes.

And then she whispered:

“I met Rachel before.””

The hallway went silent.

Daniel’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You did?””

Emma nodded.

“I forgot.””

My stomach tightened.

“Forgot what?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t forget.””

Her voice shook.

“I buried it.””

Those words were heavier than anything else she could have said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, you don’t know what you’re saying.””

She looked at him.

And something changed.

The woman who had spent years afraid of him was still afraid.

But underneath that fear was something else.

Anger.

“You told me she was crazy.””

Daniel went quiet.

“She wasn’t.””

“Emma.””

“She wasn’t crazy.””

Her voice became stronger.

“She was trying to warn me.””

I looked at Rachel.

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“You remember.””

Emma nodded slowly.

“Not everything.””

She looked down.

“But enough.””

I guided her back into the room.

“Sit down.””

Everyone followed.

For the first time, Daniel was not controlling the situation.

He was surrounded.

And he hated it.

Emma sat on the bed.

“I met Rachel three months before my wedding.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t understand what was happening.””

She looked at Rachel.

“She came to my apartment.””

Rachel nodded.

“I did.””

“What did you say?””

Rachel looked at Emma.

“I told you to leave him.””

Emma closed her eyes.

“I thought you were obsessed.””

Daniel had told her that.

Of course he had.

“He showed me messages.””

Rachel looked down.

“Fake messages.””

Emma nodded.

“I know now.””

My hands curled into fists.

“How did you know?””

“Because that night…”

She stopped.

Her voice became quieter.

“That night was the first time Daniel scared me.””

The room became still.

“What happened?””

Emma stared at the floor.

“I told him Rachel came to see me.””

“And?””

“He wasn’t surprised.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?””

“He already knew.””

Rachel looked at me.

“He always knew.””

Emma nodded.

“He asked me exactly what she said.””

“Exactly?””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“Not what happened.””

“What do you mean?””

“He didn’t ask why she came.””

My skin prickled.

“He asked what words she used.””

A silence followed.

Because that was the kind of detail that mattered.

Someone who cared would ask if you were okay.

Someone who wanted control would ask what information you had.

“I remember being scared,” Emma said.

“Then why did you marry him?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Emma looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I think because I wanted to believe him.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I loved the person he pretended to be.””

Daniel shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.””

Nobody looked at him.

Emma continued.

“The night before our wedding…”

She stopped.

Her hands started shaking.

Rachel immediately noticed.

“Emma.””

“What happened?”” I asked.

She took a deep breath.

“Daniel and I fought.””

“About Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

Emma looked at me.

“He showed me something.””

“What?””

“A video.””

My expression changed.

“What kind of video?””

“Of Rachel.””

Rachel went still.

“He recorded me?””

Emma nodded.

“But now I know it wasn’t what he said.””

“What did he say?””

“He said Rachel attacked him.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Liar.””

Emma whispered:

“But in the video…”

“What?””

“I saw Rachel crying.””

Nobody moved.

“She wasn’t attacking him.””

Emma looked terrified.

“She was begging him to leave her alone.””

The truth finally surfaced.

Not all at once.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Daniel’s entire story was falling apart.

“You knew,” I said to Daniel.

He stared at me.

“You knew Rachel was trying to warn her.””

Silence.

“You knew.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“She was trying to ruin my life.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“She was trying to survive yours.””

His eyes became cold.

For the first time, he stopped pretending.

“You think you’re better than me?””

The question surprised me.

I stared.

“What?””

“You.””

He pointed at me.

“You think because you wear a badge, you’re different.””

I didn’t answer.

“You think you can save everyone.””

His voice became sharper.

“But you can’t.””

Emma looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He turned toward her.

And the fear returned to her face.

But she didn’t look away.

“You hurt me.””

The words were quiet.

But powerful.

“You made me believe I was the problem.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You are my wife.””

“No.””

Emma shook her head.

“I was your victim.””

The room became silent.

And something inside me shifted.

Because that was the moment Emma took back the power he had stolen.

Not when she left.

Not when she reported him.

Right there.

When she named what happened.

Daniel looked at all of us.

Then smiled.

A small, controlled smile.

“You still don’t know everything.””

I stepped closer.

“What else?””

He looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“Ask her why she really stayed.””

Emma froze.

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel walked toward the door.

“You’ll find out.””

I moved to stop him.

But he was already gone.

I looked back at Emma.

Her face had turned pale.

“Emma?””

She didn’t answer.

“Emma, what did he mean?””

She stared at the floor.

And then she whispered:

“There’s something I never told you.””

I sat beside her.

“What?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The reason I couldn’t leave Daniel…”

She looked at me.

“…was because he threatened someone else.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

May you like

Emma’s voice barely came out.

“You.””
