Chapter 10: The Last Lie Daniel Mercer Told

The photograph stayed on my screen.

Emma.

Standing outside the hospital.

Alone.

And behind her…

Daniel.

For one second, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

Because it made no sense.

Emma was supposed to be protected.

She was supposed to be surrounded by officers.

She was supposed to be safe.

Then I remembered.

Daniel didn’t break rules.

He found ways around them.

“Call the hospital,” I said.

Marcus was already moving.

“I’m calling now.””

I stared at the photograph.

The timestamp was only three minutes old.

Three minutes.

That meant Daniel had been close.

Watching.

Waiting.

Rachel stepped beside me.

“He wanted you to see this.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“He wants you to come after him.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

“And you can’t.””

My jaw tightened.

Because she was right.

Daniel wanted an emotional reaction.

He wanted me to forget procedure.

Forget strategy.

Forget everything I had learned.

But this wasn’t just a case.

This was my sister.

My twin.

The person whose voice had whispered six words into the darkness at 3:07 in the morning.

*Come pick me up… my husband…*

I had spent years running toward danger.

But this time, danger had a face.

And that face knew exactly how to hurt me.

Marcus ended the call.

His expression told me everything before he spoke.

“The hospital lost sight of her.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean lost sight?””

“She left her room.””

“Who was with her?””

“Nobody.””

I stared.

“Nobody?””

“She asked a nurse for water. When the nurse returned, Emma was gone.””

My hands curled into fists.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Not if Daniel had help.””

The words hit me.

Help.

Someone inside.

Someone who could move through the hospital without raising suspicion.

I looked at the documents.

The names.

The connections.

The people Daniel had collected.

He didn’t operate alone.

He created a network.

People who believed they owed him something.

People who looked away.

People who helped him without understanding the damage they caused.

“We need to find her now,” I said.

Marcus nodded.

“We’re already working on it.””

My phone rang.

This time, I knew who it was.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Where is she?””

A pause.

Then his calm voice.

“Always direct.””

“Where is Emma?””

“You sound angry.””

“Daniel.””

“You should calm down.””

I almost laughed.

“After everything you’ve done, you’re telling me to calm down?””

“I’m telling you because I know you.””

“No, you don’t.””

“Yes, I do.””

His voice became softer.

“I know you better than you think.””

I looked at Rachel.

Then at the evidence.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

“I know you would sacrifice everything for your sister.””

Silence.

“And I know that’s why she’s alive.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did you do?””

“I saved her.””

“You kidnapped her.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“She came with me.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I knew what he was doing.

The same thing he had always done.

Changing reality.

Creating a new version where he was the victim.

“Put Emma on the phone.””

A pause.

Then:

“She doesn’t want to talk.””

“Let me hear her.””

“She’s scared.””

My voice became colder.

“Of you.””

Another pause.

“No.””

Then I heard something.

A sound.

A breath.

“Claire?””

My entire body froze.

Emma.

“Emma?””

“Claire…”

Her voice was shaking.

“I’m sorry.””

My heart broke.

“Where are you?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel interrupted.

“She’s confused.””

I ignored him.

“Emma, listen to me.””

“I’m listening.””

“Stay calm.””

A small sob.

“I tried.””

“I know.””

“I tried to leave.””

“I know.””

“I thought I could do it.””

“You can.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“He was right.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

“He said nobody would believe me.””

“I believe you.””

“He said I would destroy everything.””

“You didn’t.””

“He said I was weak.””

I closed my eyes.

“Emma.””

“You are not weak.””

Silence.

Then Daniel took the phone.

“She still needs me.””

My anger nearly broke through.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You need her to need you.””

A pause.

For the first time, Daniel was quiet.

Because I had finally named it.

“You don’t love Emma.””

His voice changed.

“You don’t understand love.””

“No.””

I looked at Rachel.

“I understand it perfectly.””

“Love means protecting someone.””

“Not controlling them.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You really believe that.””

“Yes.””

“That’s why you’ll never understand.””

“Understand what?””

His voice lowered.

“That people are safer when someone else makes their choices.””

I felt sick.

Because he truly believed it.

That was the most terrifying part.

He didn’t see himself as a villain.

He saw himself as necessary.

“You’re sick, Daniel.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You’re just like my mother.””

The line went quiet.

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

Rachel looked at me.

Daniel continued.

“She thought kindness would save everyone too.””

“What happened to your mother?””

A long silence.

Then:

“She learned the world isn’t kind.””

I heard something in his voice.

Something buried.

Pain.

Not an excuse.

Not a justification.

Just a wound he turned into a weapon.

“Where are you?””

He ignored the question.

“Do you know why Emma was perfect?””

I said nothing.

“Because she reminded me of her.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He continued.

“Someone who believed people could change.””

I felt a chill.

“And you hated that.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I hated that she was weak.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She was kind.””

“Kind people get hurt.””

“Cruel people hurt them.””

Silence.

Then Emma spoke again.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was different.

Not afraid.

“Let me go.””

The line became completely silent.

“Emma.””

“I’m done.””

I held my breath.

Because I knew what that meant.

She wasn’t just talking to him.

She was finally talking for herself.

“I spent years thinking I needed you.””

Her voice trembled.

“But I didn’t.””

“Emma.””

“I needed myself.””

Daniel’s breathing changed.

The calm mask cracked.

“You don’t mean that.””

“I do.””

“No.””

“I do.””

“You’re confused.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m awake.””

Those two words changed everything.

Because Daniel’s greatest weapon had been keeping her asleep.

Keeping her trapped inside his version of reality.

But now she was awake.

And he knew it.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

Emma didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“You think this changes anything?””

“Yes.””

“You think one brave moment fixes years of damage?””

“No.””

I looked at Rachel.

“It starts something.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“You really think you won.””

“No.””

I looked outside.

Police vehicles were arriving.

“We’re coming.””

Daniel laughed.

“Come.””

The call ended.

Immediately, Marcus began tracing.

“We have a location.””

“Where?””

“An abandoned property outside the city.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“Which one?””

Marcus told her.

And she went pale.

“What?””

“I know that place.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Daniel took me there once.””

The room became silent.

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to show me where he grew up.””

A pause.

“But he was lying.””

“What was it?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“His father’s old house.””

The same place connected to his past.

The same place where everything began.

We moved fast.

The drive felt shorter this time.

Because there was no uncertainty anymore.

We knew who Daniel was.

We knew what he wanted.

And we knew Emma was fighting back.

When we arrived, the house stood alone.

Old.

Abandoned.

Forgotten.

Just like the secrets buried inside it.

Officers surrounded the building.

Marcus looked at me.

“You stay behind us.””

I nodded.

For once, I didn’t argue.

Because this wasn’t about proving I was strong.

It was about bringing my sister home.

The door opened.

Inside, Daniel stood in the center of the room.

Emma was behind him.

But she wasn’t tied up.

She wasn’t trapped.

She was standing.

Daniel looked at us.

Then smiled.

“You came.””

I looked at Emma.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“I’m okay.””

Those words meant everything.

Daniel looked disappointed.

“She doesn’t understand.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked at Emma.

“She understands more than anyone.””

His expression hardened.

“You think this ends here?””

“Yes.””

“You think people will believe you?””

Emma stepped forward.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You need me.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“I protected you.””

“You controlled me.””

“I loved you.””

“You loved owning me.””

The words destroyed the last piece of his mask.

For the first time, Daniel Mercer looked like what he really was.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man terrified of losing control.

The officers moved forward.

Daniel didn’t fight.

He just stared at Emma.

“You’ll regret this.””

Emma looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice was steady.

“I regret staying.””

That was the end.

Not the arrest.

Not the paperwork.

Not the courtroom.

This moment.

The moment Emma stopped believing his lies.

Months later, the world knew the truth.

The files Daniel kept became evidence.

The records Rachel saved became evidence.

The voices he tried to silence became evidence.

And finally, after years of fear, the people he controlled were heard.

Daniel Mercer was held accountable for what he had done.

But healing wasn’t immediate.

It never was.

Some wounds didn’t disappear just because justice arrived.

Emma still had difficult days.

Days when memories returned.

Days when she questioned herself.

Days when fear tried to come back.

But now she had something she didn’t have before.

Choice.

Freedom.

A voice.

Rachel rebuilt her life too.

For years, she believed Daniel had stolen her future.

But eventually, she realized something.

He had taken years.

Not her entire life.

And me?

I learned something I never expected.

Being strong didn’t mean carrying everything alone.

Sometimes strength was asking for help.

Sometimes strength was admitting you were hurt.

Sometimes strength was simply surviving long enough to tell the truth.

I still think about that night.

3:07 a.m.

The phone call.

The six words that changed everything.

“Come pick me up… my husband…”

I used to think that was the moment I saved Emma.

I was wrong.

May you like

That was the moment Emma saved herself.

I was just lucky enough to be there when she finally found the courage to walk away.
