Chapter 8: The Man Who Stayed

Marcus ran toward the sound of Jamal's last transmission.

The corridor seemed longer than before.

Red emergency lights flashed against the concrete walls, turning every doorway into a dark mouth. Somewhere ahead, water dripped steadily. Somewhere closer, a door slammed.

"Jamal!""

His voice echoed.

No answer.

Evelyn stayed behind him, breathing hard.

"Marcus, wait.""

He didn't.

He reached the next intersection and stopped.

Three corridors.

Left.

Right.

Straight.

No sign of Jamal.

Marcus raised his flashlight.

Nothing.

Then he saw it.

A thin streak of blood along the floor.

Fresh.

Leading toward the corridor on the right.

He moved.

Evelyn followed.

"You shouldn't be going alone.""

"I'm not.""

He glanced back.

She was beside him.

For once, he didn't argue.

They reached a heavy steel door.

It was slightly open.

Marcus pushed it wider.

A body lay on the floor.

Marcus's heart stopped.

"Jamal.""

He rushed forward.

Jamal was on his back, one hand pressed against his shoulder.

Blood covered his sleeve.

But he was alive.

Marcus dropped beside him.

"Where are you hit?""

"Shoulder.""

"How bad?""

"Feels worse than it is.""

Marcus exhaled.

Evelyn knelt beside Jamal.

"Can you move?""

Jamal nodded.

Marcus looked around the room.

There were shelves along every wall.

Boxes.

Old evidence bags.

Maps.

And three monitors glowing in the corner.

On the largest screen was a live video feed.

Daniel Ward.

Marcus stood.

"Where is he?""

Jamal pointed toward another door.

"He took him.""

"Who?""

Jamal grabbed Marcus's sleeve.

"Don't.""

Marcus looked down.

"Who took him?""

Jamal's eyes were full of fear.

"Your brother.""

Marcus froze.

"Nathan?""

Jamal nodded.

"He was here.""

"Where?""

"With Daniel.""

"What happened?""

Jamal swallowed.

"I heard them arguing.""

"What were they arguing about?""

"I couldn't make out everything.""

Marcus waited.

Jamal stared at the monitors.

"Then Daniel saw me.""

"And?""

"He told me to run.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

Jamal's voice dropped.

"Because Nathan wasn't trying to save him.""

Evelyn stood.

"What was he trying to do?""

Jamal looked at her.

"Kill him.""

Silence.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Daniel appeared again.

His hands were free now.

He was standing beside a metal table.

Nathan stood behind him.

A gun was pointed at Daniel's back.

Marcus stepped toward the monitor.

"That's live.""

Jamal shook his head.

"No.""

He pointed to the timestamp.

"Look.""

Marcus leaned closer.

Three minutes earlier.

The feed was delayed.

A recording.

But where was the original?

Marcus scanned the room.

A small red light blinked beneath the desk.

A server.

He crouched.

The machine displayed a progress bar.

*UPLOAD: 92%*

Marcus frowned.

"What is this?""

Jamal looked over.

"I don't know.""

Evelyn did.

"Daniel's ledger.""

Marcus stared at her.

"The real one?""

She nodded.

"He said it wasn't paper.""

Marcus looked at the server.

"He's uploading it.""

"To whom?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Everyone.""

Marcus understood.

Daniel wasn't trying to escape.

He was trying to expose the entire operation.

"If he finishes, they can't bury it.""

Jamal looked at the progress bar.

"Then why hasn't anyone stopped it?""

Marcus stared at the monitor.

"Because they don't know where the original server is.""

A voice came from behind them.

"They do now.""

Marcus spun.

Nathan stood in the doorway.

No weapon visible.

His suit was soaked with rain.

His face was bruised.

But his eyes were steady.

Marcus raised his gun.

"Hands where I can see them.""

Nathan lifted both hands.

"Good.""

Marcus's voice shook with anger.

"You shot Jamal.""

"No.""

"He says you were here.""

"I was.""

"You were holding Daniel.""

"I was.""

"You were trying to kill him.""

Nathan shook his head.

"I was trying to stop him from being killed.""

Jamal laughed bitterly.

"Those sound exactly the same right now.""

Nathan looked at him.

"You were shot by Benton.""

Jamal frowned.

"What?""

"Benton fired the weapon.""

Marcus studied Nathan.

"How do you know?""

"Because I took the gun away from him.""

Marcus tightened his grip.

"Where is Benton?""

"Dead.""

Evelyn inhaled sharply.

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"You killed him?""

Nathan didn't answer directly.

"He was going to kill Daniel.""

"You expect me to trust you?""

"No.""

Nathan lowered his hands.

"I expect you to verify everything.""

He pointed toward the server.

"That's the important part.""

Marcus glanced at the upload.

94%.

"What happens when it reaches one hundred?""

Nathan's expression changed.

"Everything changes.""

The progress bar climbed.

95%.

Nathan continued.

"Names go public. Financial records. Surveillance logs. Internal messages.

Judges. Detectives. Contractors. The people who ordered disappearances.""

"And Daniel?""

"He's the one who collected it.""

"Why would he trust you?""

Nathan's face hardened.

"He doesn't.""

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

"Then why did he work with you?""

Nathan answered.

"Because he had no one else.""

The server beeped.

96%.

A loud alarm sounded somewhere deeper in the facility.

Nathan's head turned.

"They found the backup line.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Who?""

"The people who don't want the upload finished.""

Jamal tried to stand.

Marcus stopped him.

"Stay down.""

"I can walk.""

"Later.""

Nathan moved toward the server.

Marcus raised his weapon.

"Don't.""

Nathan stopped.

"Then do something useful.""

He pointed toward the screen.

The upload had stalled.

*96% — CONNECTION INTERRUPTED*

Evelyn looked terrified.

"What happened?""

Nathan stared at the server.

"They cut the external line.""

"Can you restore it?""

"Not from here.""

Marcus looked around.

"Where?""

Nathan pointed upward.

"Roof antenna.""

Jamal groaned.

"You want us to go outside?""

"No.""

Nathan looked at Marcus.

"I want you to go to the old radio room.""

"Where is it?""

"Above us.""

Marcus studied the floor plan.

"There isn't an upper level.""

"There is now.""

A tremor shook the building.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Everyone looked up.

Nathan's voice became urgent.

"They're coming.""

Marcus moved toward the door.

"Jamal, can you move?""

Jamal forced himself upright.

"Apparently I can.""

Evelyn grabbed his good arm.

"Lean on me.""

Nathan pointed toward a stairwell.

"Third door.""

Marcus stopped.

"You're coming.""

Nathan looked at him.

"You still don't trust me.""

"No.""

"Good.""

He started walking.

Marcus followed.

They moved quickly through the underground corridors.

The building seemed to awaken around them.

Doors locked.

Lights changed.

Alarms screamed.

At the end of the hall, they reached an old elevator.

Nathan opened the panel.

"There.""

He pulled two wires.

The doors opened.

Inside was a narrow service lift.

Jamal stared.

"That thing looks older than my father.""

Nathan pressed a button.

The elevator began to rise.

Nobody spoke.

Halfway up, the lights went out.

The elevator stopped.

Evelyn gasped.

Marcus raised his flashlight.

Nathan looked at the ceiling.

"We're between levels.""

"What now?"" Jamal asked.

Nathan smiled faintly.

"We climb.""

The hatch opened.

Marcus climbed first.

They crawled into another corridor.

This one looked different.

Newer.

Clean walls.

Modern cameras.

White lights.

Marcus stared.

"This is inside the courthouse?""

Nathan nodded.

"They built it after the building officially closed.""

"How many people know this exists?""

"More than you think.""

They reached the radio room.

Nathan opened the door.

Inside was a wall of communications equipment.

Old radios.

Modern transmitters.

Signal boosters.

A central console dominated the room.

Marcus looked at Nathan.

"What do I do?""

"Connect the server to the uplink.""

"How?""

Nathan pointed.

"Blue cable. Port seven.""

Marcus found it.

He connected the cable.

The server beeped.

*97%.*

Then—

*98%.*

Nathan exhaled.

"Come on.""

A gunshot shattered the window.

Everyone ducked.

Another bullet struck the equipment.

Marcus dropped behind the console.

Jamal pulled Evelyn down.

"Sniper?""

Nathan shook his head.

"No.""

He looked through the broken window.

"Too close.""

A voice shouted from the hallway.

"Marcus Hale!""

Marcus recognized it.

Raymond Cole.

"Step away from the equipment.""

Marcus stared at the door.

Cole continued.

"You're out of time.""

Marcus looked at Nathan.

"What happens if we refuse?""

Nathan's eyes stayed on the upload.

99%.

"They come through that door.""

"Then we fight.""

Nathan looked at him.

"That's what they want.""

"Then what do they want you to do?""

Nathan smiled.

"Me?""

He picked up a radio.

"They want me to choose.""

The upload reached 99.8%.

Cole shouted again.

"Marcus, your father is waiting.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

Cole's voice softened.

"Thomas Hale is alive.""

Nathan looked at Marcus.

"He doesn't know.""

The upload reached 100%.

Every monitor in the room flashed.

*TRANSFER COMPLETE.*

For one second, the building went completely silent.

Then every telephone in the room began ringing.

One after another.

Then every monitor.

Messages appeared.

*FILE RECEIVED.*

*FILE RECEIVED.*

*FILE RECEIVED.*

*FILE RECEIVED.*

Thousands of confirmations.

Daniel had succeeded.

Marcus stared at the screens.

The truth was no longer trapped underground.

It was everywhere.

The door behind them exploded inward.

Cole entered with two armed officers.

Marcus raised his weapon.

Cole stopped.

He looked at the monitors.

The confirmation messages.

His face collapsed.

"It's done.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Yes.""

Cole lowered his weapon.

"Then you have no idea what you've started.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"I've already started.""

Cole looked at Nathan.

Then Evelyn.

Then Jamal.

Finally Marcus.

"Your father isn't the only one who's alive.""

Marcus frowned.

Cole smiled sadly.

"Your mother is too.""

Marcus stopped breathing.

That was impossible.

She had died twelve years earlier.

Cancer.

Hospice.

A funeral.

A grave Marcus visited every year.

Cole looked at his face and knew the answer before Marcus spoke.

"You lied.""

Cole shook his head.

"They lied to you.""

He turned toward the door.

Marcus grabbed him.

"Where is she?""

Cole looked back.

"Where all the people who've been erased go.""

"Where?""

Cole's eyes moved toward Nathan.

"Ask your brother.""

Marcus turned.

Nathan was gone.

The window behind the radio room stood open.

Rain blew across the floor.

Marcus ran to it.

Far below, headlights disappeared into the night.

Nathan had escaped.

But on the console, beneath the completed upload report, Marcus found one final message.

It had been scheduled to appear only after the transfer finished.

He opened it.

A video.

Daniel's face filled the screen.

"Marcus, if you're seeing this, Nathan has probably left.""

Marcus stared.

Daniel looked exhausted.

"But I need you to know something.""

He paused.

"The people behind Continuity don't care about the ledger anymore.""

Marcus felt a chill.

"Because they already know the information is public.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Now they're going after something much more important.""

Evelyn stepped closer.

Daniel whispered:

"They're going after the people who can prove who started it.""

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Three people stood outside the courthouse nineteen years earlier.

Marcus's father.

Frank Mercer.

And a woman.

Marcus stopped breathing.

His mother.

Daniel's voice continued.

"Your parents didn't discover Continuity.""

A pause.

"They created it.""

The screen went black.

Evelyn whispered Marcus's name.

He couldn't answer.

May you like

The truth had finally come.

And somehow, it was worse than every lie.
