Chapter 7: The Voice Below
The voice came again from the darkness beneath the warehouse.
"Marcus.""
It sounded exactly like him.
Not similar.
Not close.
Exact.
Same low pitch. Same slight roughness at the edges. Same pause before the second syllable of his name.
Jamal raised his weapon.
"What the hell?""
Evelyn stood frozen on the step below Marcus.
The underground corridor stretched ahead, lit by weak yellow bulbs spaced several yards apart. Pipes ran along the ceiling. Water dripped somewhere behind the walls.
Then the voice came again.
"Don't go any farther.""
Marcus stared into the darkness.
The voice was his.
But he knew one thing with absolute certainty.
He had not spoken.
"Who's there?"" Jamal shouted.
Silence.
Then:
"You already know.""
Jamal looked at Marcus.
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
A metal door slammed somewhere ahead.
Evelyn stepped closer.
"Daniel.""
"No," Marcus said.
"That could be him.""
"It isn't.""
"How do you know?""
Marcus looked toward the corridor.
"Because whoever that is wants me to believe it.""
They moved forward.
Jamal stayed behind Evelyn, weapon raised.
Every few steps, Marcus saw cameras mounted in the ceiling.
Small.
Black.
Watching.
The corridor ended at a glass partition.
Behind it sat a room filled with monitors.
Some screens showed the warehouse.
Others showed streets.
Police stations.
Intersections.
Apartment buildings.
Hospitals.
A feed labeled *DISTRICT 11* displayed the front entrance of a police station.
Another showed Marcus's own apartment building.
Another showed Evelyn's neighborhood.
Jamal stared.
"They've got surveillance everywhere.""
Marcus stepped closer to the glass.
A screen changed.
It displayed him walking into the academy fourteen years earlier.
Another showed him leaving the building after his father's funeral.
Another showed him receiving his lieutenant's promotion.
Another showed him standing outside the gas station that night.
Marcus went still.
"They've been recording me.""
Evelyn looked at the screen.
"Not just recording.""
She pointed.
"Look.""
One screen showed Marcus asleep.
In his bedroom.
A camera hidden in the ceiling.
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
"That's impossible.""
Jamal's voice hardened.
"Somebody was inside your apartment.""
Marcus stared at the image.
A timer appeared at the bottom of the screen.
*LIVE.*
His apartment was being watched right now.
"Turn it off," he whispered.
No one touched the controls.
The screen changed.
A new image appeared.
Evelyn's apartment.
Daniel's old bedroom.
Then a photograph of Marcus's father.
Then Nathan.
Then Thomas Reed.
A voice came through the ceiling speaker.
"You keep looking for the organization.""
Marcus looked around.
"You think there's one?""
"Isn't there?""
"No.""
The voice became almost amused.
"There never was.""
Jamal lowered his weapon slightly.
"Then who are we fighting?""
"The people who learned they could benefit from each other's secrets.""
Marcus stared at the monitors.
"So there's no leader.""
"There are many.""
"Then who gave the orders?""
A pause.
"Sometimes nobody.""
Marcus frowned.
The answer frightened him more than a name would have.
Because a system without one leader could survive losing anyone.
Mercer could die.
Benton could fall.
Nathan could disappear again.
It wouldn't matter.
The machine would keep moving.
A door opened behind them.
They spun around.
Nobody.
Just another empty corridor.
Evelyn whispered, "We're being moved.""
Marcus glanced at her.
"What?""
She pointed to a green light beside the glass.
It had just turned red.
Then a second door unlocked.
"Someone wants us in there.""
Jamal shook his head.
"We should not walk into rooms they open for us.""
Marcus looked toward the monitors.
On the largest screen, Nathan appeared.
He was sitting alone in a dark room.
"Marcus," Nathan said.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Where are you?""
"Not far.""
"What is this place?""
Nathan looked directly into the camera.
"A memory.""
Marcus frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Nathan's voice became serious.
"It's where they store what people forget.""
The screen flickered.
Another image appeared.
Marcus's childhood home.
His father in the kitchen.
Nathan at seventeen.
Marcus at eleven.
Their mother laughing behind the camera.
Marcus hadn't seen the photograph in years.
Then another image appeared.
The same kitchen.
Years later.
Marcus's father stood alone at the table.
A stranger sat across from him.
The stranger was Frank Mercer.
Marcus leaned closer.
He had never known Mercer knew his father.
Nathan's voice returned.
"That's where it started.""
Marcus stared.
"What happened?""
"My father discovered the ledger.""
"You said that already.""
"He didn't find a list of names.""
Nathan paused.
"He found proof that police cases were being manipulated before arrests ever happened.""
Marcus felt his jaw tighten.
"Meaning?""
"Suspects were created.""
Jamal stared at the screen.
"Created how?""
"Evidence.""
Nathan's answer was simple.
"Anonymous tips. Planted weapons. Witnesses who suddenly remembered things they had never seen.""
Marcus felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because certain people needed certain people arrested.""
"Why would anyone want that?""
Nathan looked directly into the camera.
"Money.""
The word seemed almost too ordinary for the horror surrounding it.
"Property. Contracts. Settlements.
Political favors. Protection. Every arrest created leverage.""
Marcus looked at the screens.
"And the people who disappeared?""
"People who knew too much.""
"Like Daniel?""
Nathan's expression changed.
"Daniel did more than know.""
The screen went black.
A second later, Daniel's face appeared.
He was sitting in a chair beneath a bare light.
Alive.
Alone.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"Daniel.""
His eyes moved toward the camera.
"I know you're watching this.""
Marcus stepped closer.
Daniel spoke directly to him.
"Don't trust Nathan.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then Jamal.
The message continued.
"He'll tell you the truth.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"But he'll leave out the part that matters.""
The video froze.
Marcus stared.
"What part?""
The speaker crackled.
A different voice answered.
"That he was one of them.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Nathan.
No.
Another voice.
Older.
Then the screen changed.
It showed Nathan standing beside several men.
Mercer.
Benton.
Another two faces Marcus didn't recognize.
And Daniel.
All of them in the courthouse.
Marcus stared at the timestamp.
Eleven years earlier.
Jamal whispered, "Nathan worked with them.""
Marcus couldn't speak.
Evelyn was crying silently.
"They used him," she said.
Marcus looked at her.
"How do you know?""
"Daniel told me.""
"When?""
"Before he disappeared.""
Marcus looked back at the screen.
Nathan appeared again.
This time his expression was different.
Tired.
Almost broken.
"You've seen it.""
Marcus stepped toward the camera.
"Why were you with them?""
Nathan answered through the speaker.
"Because I thought I could destroy them from inside.""
Marcus clenched his fists.
"You lied to me.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"You let me think you were dead.""
"I had no choice.""
"You always have a choice.""
Nathan's voice cracked.
"Not when they have your family.""
Marcus stopped.
Nathan continued.
"They took Dad.""
Marcus's heart lurched.
"What?""
"They didn't kill him.""
Marcus stared.
"What did you say?""
"They took him.""
"Where?""
"I don't know.""
"You expect me to believe that?""
Nathan shook his head.
"I expect you to believe what you can prove.""
The screen changed.
A file appeared.
*HALE, THOMAS — STATUS: TRANSFERRED*
Marcus stepped backward.
"No.""
Beneath it:
*LOCATION: UNKNOWN*
Then another line.
*TRANSFER AUTHORIZED BY: MARCUS HALE*
Jamal stared.
"That wasn't you.""
Marcus couldn't breathe.
"I was sixteen.""
The screen flickered.
A signature appeared.
Marcus's name.
Perfect.
Except for one detail.
The date.
Three years before Marcus was born.
Jamal frowned.
"That's impossible.""
Nathan's voice came through.
"Exactly.""
Marcus stared at the signature.
Someone had been using his identity long before he existed.
The organization hadn't recruited Marcus.
They had built a file around him.
A false identity.
A future operative.
Someone they could control before he even knew there was something to control.
"Why?""
Nathan answered.
"Because Dad was trying to expose them.""
"And me?""
"You were insurance.""
Marcus's stomach turned.
Evelyn suddenly looked toward the floor.
"Listen.""
A faint sound echoed through the corridor.
Metal scraping.
Then a voice.
Not through the speakers.
Close.
Very close.
"Marcus.""
This time the voice sounded like his father.
Marcus went rigid.
He hadn't heard that voice in nineteen years.
Jamal grabbed his arm.
"Don't.""
The voice came again.
"Son.""
Marcus's eyes filled.
Evelyn whispered, "It's not him.""
"I know.""
But his body didn't.
His feet moved before his mind could stop them.
He walked toward the sound.
At the end of the corridor stood a steel door.
A narrow window crossed the center.
Inside, someone sat in a chair.
Marcus approached slowly.
"John?""
No.
He had almost said Dad.
The figure inside raised his head.
The light was too dim to see his face.
Then he smiled.
Marcus stopped.
The man stood.
He walked toward the window.
And Marcus saw a face he hadn't seen since childhood.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray hair.
But unmistakable.
His father.
Thomas Hale.
Alive.
Marcus's weapon dropped to his side.
"That's not possible.""
Thomas placed his hand against the glass.
"Marcus.""
Marcus touched the glass from the other side.
His breathing broke.
"Dad?""
Thomas nodded.
For one impossible second, every lie in Marcus's life seemed to collapse into one truth.
His father had survived.
The accident had been a lie.
The funeral had been a lie.
The death certificate had been a lie.
His entire childhood had been built around a disappearance.
Then Thomas looked behind Marcus.
His expression changed to fear.
"Who did you bring with you?""
Marcus turned.
Jamal stood several feet away.
Evelyn was beside him.
Thomas shook his head.
"Not her.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"What?""
Thomas pressed both hands to the glass.
"She can't be here.""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Why?""
Thomas stared at her.
"Because Daniel was wrong.""
Marcus turned back.
"Wrong about what?""
Thomas's voice dropped.
"The person you're trying to save isn't Daniel.""
The overhead lights went out.
A red emergency light began flashing.
Thomas shouted:
"RUN!""
A gunshot shattered the glass.
Marcus threw himself sideways.
Jamal dragged Evelyn behind a concrete pillar.
Thomas disappeared into darkness.
Another gunshot.
Then another.
Marcus crawled toward the steel door.
"Jamal!""
"I'm here!""
"The door!""
Jamal reached it.
Locked.
Marcus searched the wall for a release.
Nothing.
Then Evelyn screamed.
Marcus turned.
A man had appeared behind her.
Black coat.
Gloves.
Gun raised.
Jamal fired.
The man ducked.
Marcus tackled him.
They crashed into the wall.
The gun skidded away.
The attacker struck Marcus across the jaw.
Marcus staggered.
The man ran.
Jamal gave chase.
Marcus looked through the shattered window.
Thomas was gone.
The room beyond was empty.
No chair.
No table.
No door.
Just a blank concrete wall.
Marcus stared.
He could barely breathe.
Evelyn touched his shoulder.
"Marcus.""
He turned.
She was holding something.
A small photograph.
It must have fallen from the attacker.
Marcus took it.
His father's face was on the front.
On the back were six words.
*DON'T TRUST THE MAN WHO SAVED YOU.*
Marcus looked toward the corridor where Jamal had disappeared.
Then his radio crackled.
Jamal's voice came through.
"Lieutenant!""
Marcus grabbed it.
"Where are you?""
Static.
Then Jamal whispered:
"I found Daniel.""
Marcus's heart slammed against his ribs.
"Where?""
Silence.
Then Jamal said:
"No.""
His voice changed.
"He's not alone.""
A gunshot exploded through the radio.
Then nothing.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
She was staring at him.
"Jamal?""
No answer.
Marcus raised his weapon.
Together they ran into the darkness.
May you like
And somewhere ahead, behind a door marked with the number 316, a man was waiting for them.
A man Marcus had trusted more than anyone else alive.
