Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Beneath Twelve Years of Lies

The truth did not come all at once.

That would have been easier.

Instead, it came in pieces.

Small pieces that slowly destroyed everything I thought I knew.

The file inside Daniel’s ring contained years of evidence.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Records.

People who had disappeared after asking questions.

Richard Vale was not just a businessman.

He was the center of everything.

The security company he controlled had been used as a cover.

Money was moved through fake contracts.

Weapons were redirected.

People were paid to stay silent.

And Daniel found it all.

A man who only worked with numbers had uncovered a machine built on lies.

I sat at the farmhouse table while Breaker reviewed the files.

My children were sleeping in the next room.

They didn’t know.

They didn’t understand.

And maybe that was a blessing.

They still believed the world was simple.

Good people.

Bad people.

Right and wrong.

Adults knew better.

Sometimes bad people wore expensive suits.

Sometimes good people wore leather vests and looked terrifying.

Breaker noticed me watching him.

“What?””

I shook my head.

“I judged you.””

He looked confused.

“At the restaurant.””

A small smile appeared.

“I scared everyone.””

“You looked like you were attacking my daughter.””

“I know.””

“And I hated you.””

He nodded.

“I know that too.””

I looked down.

“But you saved her.””

Breaker leaned back.

“Grace reminded me of someone.””

“Who?””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then:

“My daughter.””

I didn’t know he had one.

“What happened?””

Breaker looked toward the window.

“I wasn’t there when she needed me.””

His voice became lower.

“I spent my life protecting strangers and forgot the people closest to me.””

I didn’t interrupt.

Some pain needs silence.

“She died before I got another chance.””

I felt my heart ache.

“I’m sorry.””

Breaker nodded.

“Daniel knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That I carried guilt.””

He looked at the floor.

“He told me saving people was not about fixing the past.””

A small smile crossed his face.

“He said it was about making sure someone else didn’t lose their future.””

That sounded like Daniel.

Exactly like him.

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

Breaker stood immediately.

The mood changed.

“What is it?””

Mason entered.

“We have movement.””

My heart dropped.

“Vale?””

Mason nodded.

“He escaped.””

Breaker grabbed his jacket.

“How?””

“He had help.””

The room became tense.

“From who?””

Mason hesitated.

Then answered:

“One of ours.””

Everyone looked at each other.

The realization hit hard.

There was a traitor.

Someone inside their group.

Someone who had helped Vale.

Breaker didn’t react emotionally.

That scared me more.

He simply said:

“Lock everything down.””

The bikers moved.

But before he left, I grabbed his arm.

“Breaker.””

He stopped.

“What if Daniel was wrong?””

He looked at me.

“What if trusting you gets us killed?””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he answered:

“Then I’ll be the one standing there when it happens.””

I stared at him.

“You can’t promise that.””

“Yes.””

His voice was calm.

“Because Daniel asked me to protect you.””

He walked away.

And I realized something.

Breaker Cole was not protecting us because he felt responsible.

He was protecting us because he loved my husband like a brother.

Minutes later, we heard the sound.

A motorcycle engine.

Then another.

Then another.

The bikers were leaving.

Not running away.

Going toward the danger.

I looked outside.

Twelve Harleys disappeared into the darkness.

And for the first time, I understood why they had followed Breaker.

They weren’t criminals.

They were soldiers without a battlefield.

May you like

And tonight…

They had one.
