Chapter 6: The Night Twelve Harleys Returned

The next few seconds felt like hours.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The entire house became silent.

Then we heard footsteps.

Outside.

Slow footsteps.

Someone was approaching.

Breaker motioned toward me.

I moved behind the wall.

My hands shook.

Not because I was afraid of dying.

Because my children were outside.

I had left them with Mason.

I needed to know they were safe.

Breaker looked at me and somehow understood.

He whispered:

“They’re okay.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Mason would never let anything happen to them.””

That answer should not have comforted me.

But it did.

The front door creaked.

A shadow appeared.

Then another.

Breaker stepped forward.

The person outside stopped.

“Thomas Cole.””

The voice was familiar.

Breaker’s face changed.

“Richard Vale.””

My heart dropped.

The man from the photograph.

Daniel’s boss.

The person who had destroyed my life.

He walked inside slowly.

He looked nothing like the villain I expected.

That was the terrifying part.

He looked normal.

Gray suit.

Clean shoes.

Calm expression.

A man you would trust.

A man you would invite into your home.

“I wondered when you would figure it out.””

Breaker stared at him.

“You burned her apartment.””

Vale smiled slightly.

“I removed evidence.””

“You tried to kill a woman and two children.””

“I tried to recover what belonged to me.””

My anger exploded.

“What belonged to you?””

Vale looked at me.

And there was no emotion in his eyes.

“The information your husband stole.””

I stepped forward.

“You murdered him.””

Vale didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence said enough.

Breaker moved.

But Vale raised his hand.

Several men appeared outside.

Armed.

Waiting.

Breaker stopped.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was calculating.

“You brought backup.””

Vale smiled.

“You always were predictable, Thomas.””

Breaker laughed quietly.

“You still don’t understand me.””

“No?””

Breaker looked toward the window.

Then smiled.

“You don’t understand them.””

A loud sound filled the night.

Engines.

Many engines.

Vale’s expression changed.

The motorcycles.

Twelve Harley engines roared outside.

The bikers surrounded the house.

Not attacking.

Protecting.

Vale looked confused.

“You think these men scare me?””

Breaker shook his head.

“No.””

Then he stepped closer.

“They aren’t here to scare you.””

The doors opened.

Mason and the others entered.

One by one.

Silent.

Ready.

Vale looked around.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Breaker reached into his jacket.

He pulled out the metal piece from beneath the Thanksgiving table.

“You spent six years searching for this.””

Vale stared at it.

“Yes.””

Breaker smiled.

“You should have searched harder.””

He handed it to me.

I looked confused.

“What is this?””

Breaker looked at Daniel’s notebook.

“The key.””

I held it carefully.

Then I noticed something.

The markings on the metal matched the notebook.

A hidden message.

Daniel had planned everything.

The fire.

The attack.

The possibility that I would need help.

All of it.

But one question remained.

Where was the information stored?

Breaker looked at Vale.

“You never understood why Daniel chose Maya.””

Vale frowned.

“Why?””

Breaker looked at me.

“Because she was the only person he trusted enough to hide the truth.””

My heart stopped.

“I don’t understand.””

Breaker smiled sadly.

“You do.””

Then he pointed toward the metal key.

“Maya, your wedding ring.””

I froze.

My hand immediately went to my finger.

The ring Daniel gave me.

The ring I never removed.

The ring that survived the fire.

May you like

Breaker whispered:

“That’s where he hid everything.””
