Chapter 15: The Bride Who Vanished

We landed in Cedar Hollow shortly after six that evening.

Daniel had spent the flight reviewing the documents from Dr. Reed.

He was convinced we had enough evidence to request an emergency investigation into the trust transactions.

But there was another problem.

My father was telling everyone that I had temporarily transferred control of the estate to him.

If we didn't act quickly, he could move the remaining assets before a court had time to intervene.

As soon as we reached the estate, Martin met us at the entrance.

"Mr. Cole, your father is in the main office.""

"Where's Grandma?""

"In her bedroom. She's safe.""

"And Elena?""

"With Mateo in the guest apartment.""

I nodded.

"Keep them there. Nobody enters without my permission.""

Martin lowered his voice.

"There's something you should know about Natalie.""

I stopped.

"What?""

"She called Elena yesterday.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She asked whether Elena still had the envelope from Patricia.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Did Elena give her anything?""

"No, sir.""

"Did she tell Natalie where we were?""

"She refused.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

Martin hesitated.

"Mrs. Warren also said something unusual.""

"What?""

"She told Elena that she had discovered the real reason Richard wanted the wedding to happen so quickly.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What reason?""

Martin shook his head.

"She wouldn't explain over the phone.""

I went straight to the main office.

My father was sitting behind the desk.

Two attorneys stood beside him. A thick folder lay open in front of them.

He looked up when I entered.

"Adrian. I was wondering when you'd return.""

I closed the door.

"What have you told everyone?""

He smiled faintly.

"That you're dealing with personal difficulties and that I've agreed to handle the estate until you're ready to resume your responsibilities.""

"I never authorized that.""

He glanced at one of the attorneys.

The man handed me a document.

It contained a signature.

Mine.

I stared at it.

The signature looked almost perfect.

Almost.

But the final stroke was wrong.

I looked at my father.

"You forged my signature.""

Richard laughed.

"Careful with accusations.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"This document will be examined by a forensic handwriting specialist.""

My father shrugged.

"Do whatever you like.""

Daniel placed a second document on the desk.

"This is a notice requesting the suspension of all pending transfers from the Cole Family Protection Trust.""

My father glanced at it.

Then he smiled.

"You don't have the authority.""

"Neither do you," Daniel replied.

Richard stood.

"Get out of my office.""

I didn't move.

"Where is Natalie?""

His expression changed.

"Why should I know?""

"She disappeared after speaking to you.""

"She's an adult. She can go wherever she likes.""

"Did you threaten her?""

My father walked around the desk.

"Adrian, you've become obsessed with this woman.""

"She has evidence against you.""

He stopped.

For the first time, I saw something close to panic cross his face.

Then he laughed.

"What evidence?""

"The medical records. The trust transfers. The forged signatures.""

His smile disappeared.

I continued.

"Dr. Samuel Reed still has the original prescription records.""

My father's face went pale.

Daniel noticed.

"Interesting reaction, Mr. Cole.""

Richard turned toward him.

"You're making a serious mistake.""

"Then explain the records.""

My father looked at me.

"Your mother was ill. You need to accept that.""

"Then why was her prescription altered?""

"Administrative error.""

"Why did your company pay for a private medical consultation on the day she died?""

He said nothing.

"Why did you collect Margaret Whitmore's letter using my forged authorization?""

His jaw tightened.

"Because I was trying to protect this family.""

"From the truth?""

He stepped closer.

"You have no idea what your mother put me through.""

I stared at him.

"What did she do?""

"She was determined to destroy everything I had built.""

"She discovered you were stealing from the trust.""

"That money belonged to this family!""

"It didn't belong to you.""

He struck the desk with his palm.

"I kept this estate alive!""

"By taking eleven million dollars?""

His expression changed.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mr. Cole, I strongly recommend that you stop speaking.""

Richard ignored him.

"You think your mother was innocent? She was preparing to turn me in. She wanted to take the entire estate away from me.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Did you change her medication?""

He stared at me.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"I didn't give her anything she wasn't already prescribed.""

The room went silent.

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

My father seemed to realize what he had said.

He stepped back.

"That is not what I meant.""

I stared at him.

"Then what did you mean?""

He grabbed his jacket.

"This conversation is over.""

He pushed past us and left.

Daniel looked at me.

"Don't follow him.""

I stood motionless.

My father had just admitted that he had been involved in my mother's medication.

It wasn't a complete confession.

But it was enough to change the direction of the investigation.

Twenty minutes later, Martin came into the office.

"Mr. Cole, we found something.""

He placed a tablet on the desk.

It showed footage from the estate's rear entrance.

At 2:14 that afternoon, Natalie had entered the property.

She was carrying a small suitcase.

At 2:19, she left.

But she hadn't come alone.

A man had been waiting in a black vehicle.

The camera captured his face.

I recognized him immediately.

It was my father's personal driver.

"Where did they go?""

Martin checked the vehicle's location records.

"The car was driven to the old warehouse district.""

Daniel stood.

"Let's go.""

We arrived at the warehouse shortly before eight.

The building was one of the properties listed in the trust records.

It had been empty for years.

A single light was visible through a second-floor window.

I entered through the side door.

The hallway smelled of dust and damp concrete.

Then I heard a voice.

"Adrian?""

Natalie stepped out from behind a metal storage rack.

Her hair was disheveled, and her eyes were red.

I approached her.

"What happened?""

She looked at Daniel.

"Can we speak privately?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not until we establish that you're safe.""

Natalie nodded.

Then she handed me a small brown folder.

"I found this in Richard's office.""

I opened it.

Inside were documents relating to the trust.

But the last page was something different.

A marriage agreement.

My name appeared at the top.

Natalie's name was beneath it.

The document stated that upon marriage, certain estate assets would be transferred into a private holding company.

I recognized the company.

It belonged to Richard.

I looked up.

"Why did you give me this?""

Natalie wiped her cheeks.

"Because I finally understood what he intended to do.""

"What?""

She swallowed.

"He wasn't planning to give me four million dollars.""

I frowned.

"Then what was he planning?""

She pointed toward the last page.

"Read the final clause.""

I scanned it.

The wording was complicated, but one sentence stood out.

If the marriage was legally completed, the beneficiary would become subject to an irrevocable financial arrangement involving the protected estate.

I looked at Daniel.

He read it again.

Then his face hardened.

"Adrian, this is not merely an asset transfer.""

"What is it?""

Daniel pointed to a paragraph.

"It's a liability assumption agreement.""

I stared at him.

"Explain.""

"Your marriage would have triggered a transfer of financial responsibility for certain outstanding debts and disputed transactions.""

I looked back at Natalie.

"How much?""

She whispered:

"Twenty-three million dollars.""

The room seemed to spin.

My father had planned to transfer twenty-three million dollars of debt into my name through my marriage.

And the four million dollar payment to Natalie's company was only part of the arrangement.

"Why would he do that?"" I asked.

Natalie looked at me.

"Because the original trust agreement prevented him from taking the money directly. If you married me and signed the post-marital agreement, he could make the debt appear to be your responsibility.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"This changes everything.""

I turned toward Natalie.

"Why did you agree to marry me?""

She began crying.

"At first, I thought it was just a financial arrangement. Richard told me the marriage would protect both families.""

"And later?""

"Later, I fell in love with you.""

I looked away.

She stepped closer.

"Adrian, I know I don't deserve forgiveness. But there's one more thing you need to know.""

I turned back.

"What?""

She reached into her pocket and removed a small flash drive.

"Richard has the original agreement from your mother.""

I stared at it.

"Where?""

"In the old family bank vault.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Which bank?""

Natalie looked at him.

"The one your grandfather used before he died.""

I recognized the name.

It was a private bank in downtown Cedar Hollow.

"Can we access it?""

Natalie nodded.

"Not without Richard's authorization.""

I looked at the flash drive.

"What's on this?""

"An audio recording.""

"Of whom?""

She looked toward the warehouse entrance.

"Richard and the bank manager.""

Daniel immediately took the drive.

"Why didn't you give us this earlier?""

Natalie's eyes filled with tears.

"Because the recording contains something about Patricia.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She swallowed.

Then she spoke in a trembling voice.

"Richard wasn't the only person who knew about your mother's medication.""

She paused.

"Someone at the bank helped him obtain it.""

Before I could respond, Daniel's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his face changed.

"Adrian, we have a serious problem.""

"What?""

"The court has accepted your father's emergency petition.""

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel lowered his phone.

"It means your father has temporarily been granted authority to manage the estate pending a hearing.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"And the hearing?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

He paused.

"He's also requested that you be declared legally incompetent to manage your inheritance.""

I looked at Natalie.

Then at the twenty-three-million-dollar agreement.

My father had stolen the documents, manipulated the wedding, and threatened the people who knew the truth.

Now he was using the legal system to remove me from control of my own family.

But as Daniel opened the flash drive, another file appeared on the screen.

It was titled:

May you like

*PATRICIA COLE — FINAL TELEPHONE CONVERSATION.*

And the recording date was the night my mother died.
