Chapter 11: When the World Turns Against You

By sunrise, Ashford Crown was everywhere.

Not in advertisements.

Not on luxury travel lists.

Not in glowing reviews.

Every major news outlet carried the same story.

*ASHFORD CROWN EXPOSED: SECRET GUEST PROFILING SYSTEM REVEALED*

Gideon watched the coverage from his office.

Every sentence felt heavier than the last.

Some reports focused on Thomas.

Some focused on his father.

But most focused on him.

The owner.

The face of the company.

The man who had built a reputation around fairness.

The question repeated everywhere:

*How much did Gideon Ashford know?*

That question hurt more than any accusation.

Because he had asked himself the same thing.

How much should he have known?

How much had he ignored?

How much responsibility belonged to him?

Evelyn entered the room.

“They're requesting an interview.””

“Who?””

“Everyone.””

Gideon looked back at the television.

“No.””

She frowned.

“No?””

“Not yet.””

“Gideon, if you don't speak, people will decide the story without you.””

“I know.””

“Then why wait?””

“Because I don't want to explain.””

He turned.

“I want to fix.””

Evelyn studied him.

“That may not be enough.””

“I know.””

“Public opinion moves quickly.””

“I know.””

“Investors may panic.””

“I know.””

She sighed.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I do know.””

His voice softened.

“But knowing doesn't mean I can pretend everything is fine.””

Employees began receiving messages from angry customers.

Some guests canceled reservations.

Some demanded refunds.

Some said they would never stay at an Ashford Crown property again.

The damage spread quickly.

But something unexpected happened too.

Employees began defending the company.

Not because they denied the problems.

Because they knew the truth was more complicated.

A housekeeper posted:

The system existed. It hurt people. But many employees fought against it.

A former receptionist wrote:

Don't blame workers who were trapped by policies they didn't create.

The public response became divided.

Some people wanted punishment.

Others wanted reform.

And Gideon knew both sides had a point.

That afternoon, the board demanded an emergency meeting.

This time, they were afraid.

“We need to consider stepping aside,” Richard Hale said.

Gideon looked at him.

“Who?””

“Leadership.””

“Meaning?””

“You.””

The room became silent.

Gideon expected anger.

Instead, he felt tired.

“Do you believe I should resign?””

Richard hesitated.

“That isn't the question.””

“It is.””

Richard looked down.

“The company needs stability.””

Gideon nodded.

“I agree.””

“Then?””

“Stability doesn't come from pretending the problem isn't real.””

A board member interrupted.

“But the market won't wait.””

“No.””

Gideon looked around.

“The market won't.””

He paused.

“But people shouldn't have to wait either.””

Nobody spoke.

That evening, Gideon did something nobody expected.

He visited every department.

Housekeeping.

Security.

Front desk.

Kitchen.

Maintenance.

He didn't bring cameras.

He didn't bring executives.

He simply listened.

A young employee named Daniel stopped him.

“Can I ask something?””

“Yes.””

“Why are you still here?””

Gideon looked surprised.

“Because this is my company.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked around.

“Because everyone else is running away.””

The words stayed with him.

Because that was true.

Many leaders disappeared during crises.

They blamed others.

They protected themselves.

Gideon couldn't do that.

Not anymore.

At midnight, Gideon received a message from Caroline Mercer.

She wanted to meet.

Alone.

He agreed.

They met in a quiet parking structure.

Caroline looked nervous.

“I shouldn't be here.””

“Why did you come?””

“Because someone needs to know the truth.””

Gideon studied her.

“You worked for Sterling Vale.””

“No.””

“You infiltrated them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because my father worked for them.””

Gideon said nothing.

“He discovered what they were doing years ago.””

“What happened?””

“They destroyed his career.””

A pause.

“He tried to expose them.””

“And?””

“They made him look unstable.””

Gideon understood.

The same pattern.

Destroy credibility.

Silence the person.

Caroline continued.

“When I joined Ashford Crown, I thought you were different.””

Gideon looked away.

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were different.””

“Then why did this happen?””

“Because they didn't need to change you.””

She looked at him.

“They only needed to change the people around you.””

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

Because it explained everything.

A leader did not need to become corrupt.

Sometimes corruption simply needed access.

Caroline handed him a small device.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

“Who actually ordered Project Hawthorne.””

Gideon looked at the device.

“Sterling Vale?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Someone inside Ashford Crown.””

His expression changed.

“Who?””

Caroline looked terrified.

“Someone you never suspected.””

“Tell me.””

She shook her head.

“Listen first.””

Gideon pressed play.

A voice filled the silence.

A voice he recognized.

Immediately.

His heart stopped.

Because the recording was not Thomas.

Not his father.

Not a competitor.

It was someone currently sitting inside Ashford Crown.

Someone still in power.

The voice said:

“Gideon will never destroy the company himself. He loves the idea too much.””

A second voice laughed.

“Then we make him choose between the company and the truth.””

Gideon's face went cold.

The first voice continued:

“When the scandal breaks, he will either resign or become the villain.””

The recording ended.

Caroline looked at him.

“I found this three days ago.””

“Why didn't you release it?””

“Because I needed to know who I could trust.””

Gideon stared at the device.

“Who is it?””

Caroline swallowed.

Then said:

“The person who has been controlling the board for years.””

Gideon already knew.

Before she spoke the name.

But hearing it still hurt.

“Richard Hale.””

The board member.

The man who had just suggested Gideon step down.

The man pretending to save the company.

The man who had helped create the crisis.

Gideon returned to the hotel before dawn.

He walked through the lobby alone.

The same lobby where Sophie had awakened surrounded by security.

The same place where everything started.

But now he understood.

The hoodie was never the real reason.

The sleeping child was never the real issue.

The real battle had always been about something bigger.

Who controlled the story.

Who controlled the company.

Who controlled the future.

And now Gideon knew the enemy wasn't outside the walls.

It was inside.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Richard Hale.

*We need to talk before the board meeting.*

Gideon stared at the message.

Then typed one reply.

*Yes. We do.*

Because tomorrow, the man who tried to remove him from his own company would discover something important.

He was fighting to take his company back.
