Chapter 5: The Man We Buried
The footsteps stopped outside the steel door.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Sophie was still looking at me.
"Why does that man outside sound like Uncle Richard?""
I couldn't answer her.
Not immediately.
Because there are moments when the human mind refuses to accept what the ears are telling it.
Richard Hale was dead.
At least, that was what I'd believed.
Four years earlier, after millions of dollars disappeared from company accounts and an investigation was launched, Richard had vanished.
His abandoned SUV had been found near a river outside Dallas.
His phone had been recovered from inside the vehicle.
His wallet was found on the passenger seat.
Three days later, his lawyer had contacted me and informed me that Richard had apparently fled the country.
Then came the rumor that he had died in an accident overseas.
There had never been a body.
There had never been a funeral.
But after the loss of Claire, I hadn't cared enough to chase every unanswered question.
I had been too broken.
Now that voice was on the other side of the door.
"Richard?""
No response.
Victoria said sharply, "Gideon, don't.""
I stepped toward the door.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"Wait.""
I turned toward him.
"Move.""
"We don't know what's happening.""
"I know what I'm hearing.""
"That's not enough.""
"Four years ago, Richard Hale disappeared.""
"I know.""
"And now his voice is outside that door.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Exactly.""
I pulled my arm free.
"Then open it.""
Victoria spoke from the hallway.
"You don't understand what you're walking into.""
"I understand enough.""
"No.""
Her tone had changed.
For the first time, she didn't sound confident.
She sounded afraid.
That told me more than anything else.
"Victoria," I said, "open this door.""
Silence.
Then Richard spoke.
"Gideon.""
My chest tightened.
There was no mistaking it.
The same low voice.
The same faint rasp at the end of certain words.
My former chief financial officer.
My friend.
The man who had stood beside me during the opening of my first five-star property.
The man who had carried Claire's bags into the hospital.
The man I had once trusted enough to give access to everything.
Richard spoke again.
"You need to listen to me.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That's something you should have thought about four years ago.""
"I didn't have a choice.""
"Everyone has a choice.""
"Not when people control your family.""
My expression changed.
Daniel looked at me.
"What did he say?""
I stared at the door.
"Who controlled your family?""
Richard didn't answer.
I heard Victoria whisper something.
Then Richard said, "Let me in.""
"No.""
"Then leave with your daughter.""
"Why?""
"Because this room isn't safe.""
I glanced at the surveillance monitors.
"You're telling me the room you built isn't safe?""
"I didn't build it.""
That caught me.
"Then who did?""
"Someone much higher than you think.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at the floor.
"Open the door," I said.
Daniel shook his head.
"Mr. Ashford—"
"Open it.""
"Think about Sophie.""
I did.
That's why I moved away from the door.
"Get her upstairs.""
Daniel blinked.
"What?""
"Take Sophie to the presidential suite.""
"No.""
I stared at him.
"That's not a request.""
"I won't take her away from you.""
"Then stay with her.""
"And you?""
"I'll handle this.""
Sophie looked up.
"No.""
I crouched beside her.
"What?""
"I don't want to go without you.""
Her voice trembled.
"I know.""
"You said we were going home.""
"We are.""
"Then let's go now.""
I looked at her rabbit.
One ear.
Faded fur.
Four years of memories.
The only thing she had kept from before Claire died.
I touched her cheek.
"I need to take care of something first.""
"Is it dangerous?""
I hesitated.
"Maybe.""
She looked frightened.
"But you're going to be okay?""
"I'll do everything I can.""
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
I hugged her tightly.
Then I whispered, "Remember what Mom always said?""
Sophie nodded.
"Brave doesn't mean you're not scared.""
"Right.""
"It means you do the right thing anyway.""
She pulled away.
"So do the right thing.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Exactly.""
Daniel took her hand.
"We'll stay upstairs.""
I nodded.
As they reached the door to the corridor, Sophie looked back.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Don't trust the man with the nice voice.""
I almost smiled.
"Why?""
She shrugged.
"People who are really nice don't scare you.""
Daniel led her away.
I watched until they disappeared around the corner.
Then I turned back toward the steel door.
The smile left my face.
"Open it.""
The lock clicked.
The door swung inward.
Richard Hale stood in the corridor.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray threaded through his hair.
A scar ran from his left temple toward his jaw.
But his eyes were the same.
Sharp.
Dark.
Tired.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Behind him stood Victoria Shaw and Martin Vale.
Neither looked at me.
Richard took one step into the room.
I didn't move.
He looked around.
"You found it.""
"Apparently you knew I'd find it.""
"Eventually.""
I stared at him.
"You let me believe you were dead.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"I let you believe I was gone.""
"That's not the same thing.""
"No.""
"It isn't.""
Martin stepped inside.
I turned toward him.
"Get out.""
He smiled faintly.
"This isn't your meeting.""
I walked straight toward him.
"It became my meeting the second you threatened my daughter.""
Victoria stepped between us.
"Gideon.""
"Move.""
She didn't.
"Listen to Richard.""
"I'll decide who I listen to.""
Richard raised one hand.
"Let him speak to me.""
Martin looked at him.
"Richard—"
"Enough.""
The authority in Richard's voice surprised me.
Martin backed away.
I noticed that.
Richard still had influence.
Maybe more than I realized.
I looked at him.
"Start talking.""
He nodded.
"Four years ago, I found a series of transfers hidden inside the company's acquisition accounts.""
"What kind?""
"Payments to shell companies.""
"For what?""
"Properties that didn't exist.""
I waited.
Richard continued.
"The money wasn't going toward construction.""
"Where was it going?""
"To a private network of holding companies.""
"Whose?""
"I didn't know.""
"That's a lie.""
"No.""
He looked directly at me.
"That was the problem.""
I studied his face.
"Then what did you know?""
"I knew the money passed through three banks, two jurisdictions, and six corporations before coming back into accounts connected to Ashford Hospitality.""
"Why?""
"To inflate valuations.""
"Why inflate valuations?""
"To make the company look more profitable than it was.""
I frowned.
"So someone was preparing to sell.""
"Yes.""
"Without my approval.""
"Yes.""
I looked toward Victoria.
She wouldn't meet my eyes.
"Who was the buyer?""
Richard shook his head.
"That's where Claire got involved.""
The room went still.
I took a step toward him.
"Don't use her name unless you're going to tell me everything.""
"I am.""
"Then start.""
Richard breathed deeply.
"Claire found the transfers.""
My heartbeat increased.
"How?""
"She was reviewing one of your charitable foundation accounts.""
I frowned.
"Claire never handled company finances.""
"Not officially.""
"Then why was she looking?""
"Because she noticed a donation had been made in Ashford Hospitality's name.""
"What donation?""
"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
"Where?""
Richard's eyes moved toward Martin.
"An organization called Northbridge Children's Initiative.""
I recognized the name.
Claire had volunteered with a children's charity under that name.
My wife had told me several times that she wanted to support them.
I felt a chill.
"Northbridge was legitimate.""
"It was.""
"Was?""
Richard nodded.
"For years.""
"What changed?""
"Someone gained control.""
"Who?""
"That's what Claire was trying to find out.""
I remembered that time.
Claire had become unusually distracted.
I had assumed she was worried about her health.
She had started making phone calls in private.
She had stopped discussing work around me.
One evening, she'd asked me something strange.
"Do you trust Richard?""
I'd laughed.
"Of course.""
She had looked at me for several seconds.
Then said, "You should ask him about Phoenix.""
At the time, I hadn't understood.
Now I did.
"The Phoenix accounts.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What happened after Claire found them?""
Richard looked away.
"She confronted me.""
"You?""
"She thought I was involved.""
"Were you?""
"No.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was trying to protect her.""
"From whom?""
Richard's answer was quiet.
"From the people who were watching her.""
Silence.
I looked at the photographs on the desk.
Claire outside the hospital.
Claire entering a restaurant.
Claire sitting in her car.
Claire talking to someone.
I felt sick.
"How long were they watching her?""
"Months.""
"Who?""
Richard looked directly at me.
"People inside your company.""
I closed my eyes briefly.
"Victoria?""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
"Martin?""
"No.""
"Then who?""
Richard reached into his jacket and removed a small flash drive.
He placed it on the table.
"This contains the records.""
I didn't touch it.
"What records?""
"Everything Claire found.""
"And you kept this for four years?""
"I had no choice.""
"You disappeared.""
"Because they tried to kill me.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
"The same people who caused your wife to die.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"You said her death wasn't simple.""
Richard nodded.
"Her illness was real.""
That surprised me.
"What are you saying?""
"I'm saying they didn't poison her.""
"Then what?""
"They manipulated the circumstances around her treatment.""
I stared at him.
"Explain.""
Richard struggled to find the words.
"Claire had a condition that required careful monitoring. Her physicians adjusted her medications several times.""
"I know.""
"But someone interfered with the information being sent between her doctors.""
I felt my pulse in my ears.
"How?""
"False medical records.""
I stepped backward.
"That's impossible.""
"I saw them.""
"Where?""
"In the file.""
"What file?""
"The one Claire discovered.""
I looked down at the flash drive.
"You're saying someone altered my wife's medical records?""
"Not all of them.""
"Which ones?""
"The ones related to her medication.""
I shook my head.
"The doctors said there were complications.""
"There were.""
"And they said her condition deteriorated unexpectedly.""
"It did.""
"Then what are you telling me?""
Richard's voice dropped.
"That somebody made sure nobody understood why.""
I couldn't breathe.
For four years I'd blamed bad luck.
A sudden illness.
A cruel turn of fate.
A body that had betrayed a woman who had done everything right.
Now a different possibility stood in front of me.
Not murder.
Something more calculated.
Something hidden behind legitimate paperwork.
I looked at Richard.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because the moment I tried, someone sent you a forged email saying I had stolen money.""
"They did steal money.""
"Yes.""
"From the company.""
"To create the appearance that I had.""
I remembered the evidence.
The missing funds.
The offshore accounts.
The investigators.
Everything had pointed toward Richard.
But what if the money had been planted?
I looked at Martin.
He was standing silently near the door.
"Did you know?""
Martin didn't answer.
I walked toward him.
"Did you know about Claire?""
He looked at me.
For the first time, I saw something in his expression I hadn't seen all night.
Shame.
"I knew there was an investigation.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"I didn't know the details.""
"Did you know she had found the Phoenix accounts?""
He said nothing.
"Martin.""
"I knew.""
The confession hit harder than I expected.
"You knew.""
"Yes.""
"Did you know she was being watched?""
"Yes.""
"Did you warn me?""
"No.""
"Why?""
Martin's eyes dropped.
"Because I was told she'd be safe.""
"By whom?""
He hesitated.
Then answered.
"Your board.""
My blood ran cold.
"Which members?""
Martin looked toward Victoria.
She finally spoke.
"There are only two people left who know exactly what happened.""
"Who?""
"Richard.""
She paused.
"And me.""
I stared at her.
Richard looked at Victoria.
"You don't know everything.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
Then she looked at me.
"But I know enough.""
"Enough for what?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know Claire called me the night before she went into the hospital.""
I froze.
"What did she say?""
Victoria swallowed.
"She said she had proof.""
"Of what?""
"She said she knew who was stealing from the company.""
"Who?""
Victoria's voice broke.
"She never got to tell me.""
"Why?""
"Because the call ended.""
"How?""
Victoria looked at Richard.
He answered for her.
"The line went dead.""
I stared at both of them.
"Then what happened?""
Victoria whispered, "We received a message the next morning.""
"What message?""
She looked straight into my eyes.
"Claire is no longer a problem.""
The words shattered something inside me.
I didn't realize I had stepped backward until my shoulders hit the wall.
For four years, I'd thought grief was the deepest pain a person could experience.
I was wrong.
The deepest pain was learning that the story you had built your entire life around might have been a lie.
I looked at the flash drive.
Then at Richard.
"What's on it?""
"The truth.""
"About Claire?""
"About the company.""
"Same thing.""
Richard nodded.
"Exactly.""
I picked up the drive.
It was smaller than a fingernail.
Yet somehow it felt heavier than everything in the room.
Then the lights went out.
All of them.
The monitors.
The hallway.
The ceiling.
Every light vanished at once.
Sophie screamed somewhere upstairs.
"Daddy!""
I spun toward the door.
Daniel shouted from the corridor.
"Mr. Ashford!""
Then came the sound of a security alarm.
Not the normal fire alarm.
A sharp electronic warning.
*UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS.*
Martin cursed.
Victoria backed away.
Richard grabbed my arm.
"Listen to me.""
I pulled free.
"My daughter.""
"You can't go upstairs.""
"Watch me.""
"The elevators are locked.""
I ran toward the corridor.
"Then I'll use the stairs.""
Richard followed.
"You're making a mistake.""
"I've made plenty tonight.""
I reached the stairwell door.
Before opening it, I heard a phone ringing somewhere in the darkness.
Not mine.
Not Daniel's.
A landline.
I followed the sound.
It was coming from the hidden room.
Richard was staring at the desk.
The phone continued ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
I answered.
"Hello?""
Silence.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
"Mr. Ashford?""
"Who is this?""
"You need to listen carefully.""
"Where is my daughter?""
"She's safe.""
I closed my eyes.
"Who are you?""
The woman breathed shakily.
"I worked with Claire.""
My heart stopped.
"What's your name?""
A pause.
"Dr. Emily Carter.""
The name meant nothing.
Until she said one more sentence.
"Your wife wasn't trying to expose the people who stole your money.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then what was she trying to expose?""
Her answer came barely above a whisper.
"She was trying to expose the people who own the people stealing it.""
Then the line went dead.
May you like
And somewhere above us, an elevator began moving upward.
Toward my daughter.
