Chapter 9: The Daughter of Two Secrets

I wanted to call the police.

Every instinct told me to.

A child was missing.

My daughter was gone.

But then I saw the second message.

A photograph attached.

Emma.

Standing beside my mother.

Both of them looking directly at the camera.

They were not afraid.

They were waiting.

The timestamp was from thirty minutes ago.

They wanted me to know she was alive.

They wanted me to follow.

And I hated that it worked.

Because whoever had taken Emma knew exactly what they were doing.

They knew I would choose my daughter over everything.

The location was the old boathouse.

The same place near the lake where my mother disappeared.

The place where my family’s biggest lie began.

When I arrived, the door was open.

Inside, I saw my mother.

Alive.

Standing beside Emma.

For a moment, everything stopped.

I didn’t care about the secrets.

The lies.

The betrayal.

I only saw my mother.

The woman I had mourned for twelve years.

“Mom.””

Her face broke.

“Robert.””

I walked toward her.

Then stopped.

Because behind her stood another person.

My father.

My whole family was there.

All the people who had destroyed my understanding of the past.

All standing in one room.

“Why?”” I whispered.

My mother looked at me.

“Because you needed to know.””

“Know what?””

She looked at Emma.

“The truth about who she is.””

I looked at my daughter.

Emma seemed calm.

Too calm.

“What happened?””

My mother knelt beside her.

“Emma remembered something.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Remembered what?””

Emma looked at me.

“The night Grandma disappeared.””

My blood turned cold.

“Emma…”

She stepped closer.

“I saw it.””

“No.””

“I did.””

Her voice was soft.

Like she had carried the memory for years.

“I was little.””

“You weren’t there.””

My mother looked at me.

“She was.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

My mother walked closer.

“When Emma was born, something happened.””

“What?””

“She stopped breathing.””

I felt sick.

“Mom…”

“She was gone for four minutes.””

The room went silent.

“Doctors brought her back.””

My mother looked at Emma.

“And when she opened her eyes…”

She paused.

“She spoke.””

I stared.

“What did she say?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said my name.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

“She had never heard my voice before.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

My mother whispered:

“I’m saying your daughter remembers things she shouldn’t.””

Emma looked at me.

“Dad.””

I knelt.

“What?””

She touched my face.

“Grandma told me not to be scared.””

My eyes filled.

“Why?””

“Because the bad people are scared of me.””

I looked at my mother.

“What bad people?””

Before anyone answered…

The lights went out.

A sound came from outside.

Cars.

Several of them.

My father moved immediately.

“They found us.””

My mother grabbed Emma’s hand.

“Robert, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“You need to take Emma and run.””

“What about you?””

Her expression changed.

The same expression from the photograph.

The same expression from seventeen years ago.

A mother protecting her child.

“I already lost twelve years.””

She smiled sadly.

“I’m not losing my granddaughter.””

The door shook.

Someone was outside.

My father reached into a cabinet.

My mother looked at me.

“Now you finally understand.””

“Understand what?””

She whispered:

“Why I came back.””

The door began to break.

And my mother said the words I would remember for the rest of my life.

“I didn’t come back to expose the truth.””

A crash.

May you like

The door splintered.

“I came back to stop it.””
