Chapter 6: Beneath the Floorboards

For several seconds, Martha couldn't move.

“Under my floorboards?””

Daniel nodded.

“The evidence is there.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Frank told me.””

“When?””

“The night before he disappeared.””

Martha looked at the captured man.

He was no longer smiling.

That frightened her more than anything.

He had been confident when he believed they were confused. Now that Daniel had revealed the location, the man's face had gone completely blank.

Wade noticed.

“So it's true.””

The man said nothing.

Wade grabbed his collar.

“What's underneath her house?””

Still nothing.

Martha stepped toward him.

“What are you afraid I'll find?””

His eyes moved to her.

“You have no idea what that house contains.””

“Then tell me.””

“You'll be safer not knowing.””

Martha stared at him.

“For thirty years, everyone has told me what was safer.””

Her voice trembled.

“Frank disappeared. People lied. Records vanished.

Men watched my house. Now someone breaks into a dealership and shoots at us.””

She stepped closer.

“I am finished being protected by lies.””

The man looked away.

Wade tightened his grip.

“Who are you?””

A smile returned.

“Ask Daniel.””

Martha turned.

Daniel's expression was haunted.

“I know his name.””

“Then say it.””

Daniel didn't answer.

The man laughed softly.

“You see?””

He looked at Martha.

“He's still protecting the person who betrayed Frank.””

Daniel snapped.

“Enough.””

The man raised an eyebrow.

“You know exactly who I'm talking about.””

Martha looked between them.

“Who?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not here.””

“Why not?””

“Because this room isn't safe.””

Wade glanced toward the broken windows.

“He's right.””

Martha stared at the old photograph still lying on the desk.

Frank and Daniel.

Two brothers.

One key.

A secret hidden beneath her own house.

She suddenly remembered a sound from thirty years ago.

Three knocks.

Always three.

Frank used to knock on the basement wall whenever he wanted her attention while she was upstairs.

Three knocks.

Never two.

Never four.

Three.

Martha's eyes widened.

“Wait.””

Wade looked at her.

“What?””

“The floor.””

“What about it?””

“I know where.””

Daniel stared.

“Where?””

“In the kitchen.””

Everyone looked at her.

Martha swallowed.

“When we bought the house, there was a loose board.””

Wade frowned.

“You never mentioned that.””

“Because Frank fixed it.””

Daniel's face changed.

“When?””

“Two days before he disappeared.””

The captured man looked suddenly alarmed.

Martha noticed.

“What?””

He said nothing.

“What did you just recognize?””

Still silent.

Martha pointed at him.

“You know my house.””

The man's jaw tightened.

Wade turned to him.

“Have you been there?””

No answer.

Wade hit the desk with his palm.

“Have you been inside her house?””

The man finally spoke.

“Once.””

Martha's heart sank.

“When?””

“Twenty-eight years ago.””

“That was after Frank disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To find something.””

“What?””

“The box.””

Martha looked at Daniel.

“You searched my home.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Not me.””

“Then who?””

Daniel looked at the prisoner.

“Him.””

Martha's face hardened.

“You've been in my house.””

“Yes.””

“While I was living there?””

“Yes.””

“Did you hurt anyone?””

“No.””

“Did you steal anything?””

“No.””

“Then why didn't I know?””

“Because Frank had taught me how to move through that house.””

She stared.

“You knew my house because Frank showed you?””

“He showed me the hidden routes.””

Martha's skin prickled.

“Hidden routes?””

Wade looked at Daniel.

“What the hell did Frank build?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not what he built.””

“What, then?””

“What was already there.””

Martha's eyes narrowed.

“Explain.””

Daniel moved toward the old photograph.

“Your house wasn't originally a house.””

She stared.

“What?””

“It was a boarding property.””

Daniel pointed at the image.

“Before your family bought it, there was a workshop underneath.””

Martha felt confused.

“I've lived there almost fifty years.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn't I know?””

“Because the basement was sealed.””

Wade looked at Martha.

“You have a basement?””

“Half basement. Mostly dirt floor.””

Daniel nodded.

“That isn't the whole basement.””

Martha remembered the strange sealed section behind the furnace.

She had never questioned it.

Frank had always told her it was part of the old foundation.

She felt sick.

“Take me home.””

Wade immediately objected.

“No.””

“My house has the evidence.””

“And probably people watching it.””

Martha looked at him.

“Then we go prepared.””

Wade studied her.

There was no hesitation left in her face.

The woman who had entered the dealership asking for a serial number was gone.

In her place stood Frank Bell's wife.

And after twenty-nine years of waiting, she had finally found the trail.

Wade looked at Derek.

“Can you get us out without being seen?””

Derek nodded.

“There is an old service road behind the dealership.””

“Can it reach the main road?””

“Eventually.””

“Good.””

The captured man laughed.

“You're wasting your time.””

Wade looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you're already too late.””

“For what?””

The man looked at Martha.

“They know where the house is.””

Martha's blood ran cold.

“Who knows?””

He smiled.

“Everyone.””

Wade's expression hardened.

“Derek, lock him in the office.””

“What?””

“Use the old storage room.””

“I can't keep someone locked up.””

“Then don't call it locked up.””

Wade pointed toward the damaged office.

“Call it waiting.””

The man suddenly lunged.

Wade caught him.

The fight was brief but violent.

The man's elbow struck Wade's shoulder.

Wade slammed him into the wall.

Daniel rushed forward.

Martha shouted.

“Stop!””

They froze.

The man's hand was bleeding.

So was Daniel's.

Martha looked at the blood on the floor.

Then she noticed something.

A small metal object had fallen from the attacker's pocket.

A key.

Not a motorcycle key.

An old brass key.

Martha stepped closer.

She recognized it.

“The box.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“That key.””

She pointed.

“It belonged to Frank.””

Wade picked it up.

There was a tiny engraving.

*B-17.*

Daniel stared.

“That isn't a house key.””

“What is it?””

“I don't know.””

The attacker smiled.

“But Frank did.””

Martha took the key from Wade.

The man looked straight at her.

“You still haven't figured out what the number means.””

She ignored him.

“Get me home.””

They left through the service road.

Derek stayed behind to deal with the dealership and the police report.

Martha sat in the back of Wade's truck.

Daniel rode in front.

The captured man was tied in the storage room under Derek's supervision.

The drive was mostly silent.

Martha watched streetlights pass through the window.

She kept hearing Frank's voice.

I'm not dead.

She had repeated those words in her mind until they felt almost unreal.

After decades of imagining his final moments, she was now heading home to search beneath the floorboards.

The place where she had raised their children.

The place where she had slept alone after his disappearance.

The place where his photographs still occupied a drawer in the bedroom.

Could the truth really have been beneath her feet all along?

Wade glanced in the rearview mirror.

“You okay?””

“No.””

He nodded.

“That's honest.””

“I don't know who my husband became after he disappeared.””

Wade said nothing.

“I've spent years imagining that he was taken.””

“You were right.””

“But I don't know why he stayed away.””

Wade's eyes remained on the road.

“Maybe he didn't have a choice.””

Martha looked toward Daniel.

He was staring through the windshield.

“Did he ever try to contact me?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.””

Her breath caught.

“When?””

“Several times.””

“Why didn't I know?””

“He couldn't risk it.””

“Then how many times?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Four.””

Martha stared at him.

“Four?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“I don't know the exact dates.””

“You should.””

“I destroyed the records.””

Her eyes hardened.

“Why?””

“Because they were being followed.””

Martha looked away.

For a moment she didn't speak.

Then:

“Was he alone?””

Daniel's voice softened.

“No.””

“With someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Daniel.””

“I swear.””

Martha turned toward the window.

Somewhere in those twenty-nine years, her husband had built another life.

Or survived without one.

She didn't know which possibility hurt more.

They reached her street at midnight.

Wade slowed the truck.

The house appeared normal.

Porch light on.

Curtains drawn.

Mailbox untouched.

Martha stared.

“Nothing looks different.””

Wade parked two houses away.

“That doesn't mean anything.””

They approached on foot.

Daniel stayed behind.

Wade scanned the street.

No moving cars.

No open windows.

No suspicious lights.

Martha unlocked her front door.

The moment she stepped inside, she knew.

Something was wrong.

The air smelled different.

Not strong.

Just unfamiliar.

She closed the door.

“Someone's been here.””

Wade nodded.

“How?””

“Frank's photograph.””

She pointed toward the hallway.

“There.””

The wall held dozens of framed photographs.

Family vacations.

Birthdays.

Wedding pictures.

But one frame was crooked.

Martha touched it.

She had always kept it perfectly straight.

Wade examined it.

“Someone moved this.””

Daniel entered quietly.

He walked toward the fireplace.

“There's no dust on the mantel.””

Martha stared.

“What does that mean?””

“Someone touched it recently.””

Wade checked the locks.

“Kitchen first.””

They moved through the house.

Nothing appeared stolen.

The television was untouched.

Jewelry remained in its drawer.

The silverware hadn't moved.

But when Martha entered the kitchen, she stopped.

One floorboard near the table had a fresh scratch.

Wade crouched.

“This one?””

Martha nodded.

“That wasn't there yesterday.””

She knelt.

Her fingers traced the wood.

Three small nail marks.

Then another three.

Frank's old signal.

Three knocks.

Three marks.

“He wanted me to find this.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Don't pull it yet.””

Martha froze.

“Why?””

“Because if Frank created a hidden compartment, there may be something protecting it.””

Wade looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel sighed.

“Frank built a pressure mechanism.””

Martha stared at the floor.

“Meaning?””

“If the board is lifted incorrectly, whatever is inside can be destroyed.””

Wade's expression hardened.

“You waited until now to mention that?””

“I forgot.””

“You forgot?””

“I haven't thought about it in twenty-nine years.””

Martha looked at Daniel.

“You're lying.””

He met her eyes.

“I remembered when I saw the key.””

She held up the brass key.

“B-17.””

Daniel looked at it.

“It isn't for the floor.””

“Then what is it for?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Martha looked at the scratched board.

Then at the key.

Then at the fireplace.

Something clicked inside her mind.

Frank's habits.

His obsession with labels.

His tendency to number tools.

His habit of organizing everything.

B-17.

She walked into the hallway.

“What are you doing?”” Wade asked.

“Looking.””

She opened a closet.

Old coats.

Boxes.

Christmas decorations.

Nothing.

Then she saw the wooden panel at the bottom.

There were seventeen nails.

She counted.

One.

Two.

Three.

Wade came closer.

“What's B?””

“Basement.””

She pointed.

“B-17.””

Daniel's face changed.

“No.””

Martha pulled the panel loose.

Behind it was a narrow metal compartment.

Inside sat a small steel box.

The lock matched the brass key.

Her hands trembled.

Wade whispered:

“Don't open it here.””

Martha looked at him.

“Frank said the same thing.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“Wait.””

She inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

She opened the box.

Inside was a folded map.

A photograph.

A small flash drive.

And a handwritten list.

Martha unfolded the paper.

There were names.

Dozens.

She recognized some immediately.

Local businessmen.

A former police chief.

A judge.

People whose names had appeared in newspapers over the last thirty years.

At the bottom of the page was one name circled twice.

*Daniel Bell.*

Martha looked at him.

Daniel's face went pale.

“No.””

“You said you weren't involved.””

“I wasn't.””

“Your name is here.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Daniel couldn't answer.

Wade picked up the photograph.

His face changed.

It showed Frank standing beside a car.

Next to him was another man.

Young.

Martha stared.

She recognized him.

The scar.

The gray beard.

The attacker from the dealership.

But the photograph had been taken almost thirty years earlier.

And on the back, Frank had written:

*The man who has been protecting Daniel.*

Martha slowly looked at Daniel.

“You told me the wrong person betrayed Frank.””

Daniel shook his head desperately.

“No.””

The front door creaked.

Everyone froze.

A man's voice came from the dark hallway.

“Mrs. Bell?””

Martha gripped the list.

The voice continued.

“You finally found it.””

Wade reached for his gun.

Daniel whispered:

“Don't.””

Martha stared toward the darkness.

“Why?””

Daniel looked terrified.

May you like

“Because that's Frank's voice.””

And then the man stepped into the light.
