Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden Inside the Family Fortune
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sophie's face.
Not the injury.
Not the blood.
The moment before everything happened.
The moment she was still happy.
Still innocent.
Still believing her family loved her.
That was the part I couldn't forgive.
Not because someone tried to steal money.
Money could be replaced.
But childhood couldn't.
Trust couldn't.
The next morning, I called my attorney.
Her name was Olivia Grant.
I had worked with her once before when I finalized my divorce.
She was one of the few people in my life who never asked me to "understand" someone else's behavior before acknowledging my pain.
When she arrived, I handed her the documents.
She read silently.
Then looked up.
"Evelyn.""
Her voice was serious.
"How long have you known about this?""
"I found it yesterday.""
She flipped through the papers.
"Your brother filed a petition to contest the trust.""
"Can he do that?""
"Anyone can file.""
"Can he win?""
She paused.
"Not easily.""
That answer bothered me.
"Why?""
"Because your grandmother was very specific.""
She pointed at the document.
"She created this trust specifically to prevent other family members from accessing the funds.""
I laughed bitterly.
"So she knew.""
Olivia looked at me.
"She knew something.""
My grandmother had been the only person in my family who challenged Preston.
She used to say:
"Charm is not character.""
I never understood what she meant.
Not until now.
"What happens next?""
Olivia closed the folder.
"First, we protect Sophie.""
"And Preston?""
"Second, we investigate whether this wedding incident was connected to the trust.""
I nodded.
Because deep down, I already knew.
The missing phone.
The accusation.
The humiliation.
It was all a distraction.
A way to make me look like an emotional mother instead of someone asking questions.
That afternoon, I received another surprise.
A visit from Daniel.
I almost didn't open the door.
But I wanted answers.
When I saw him standing there, he looked nothing like the confident best man from the wedding.
He looked exhausted.
Ashamed.
"I know you don't want to see me.""
"You're right.""
He swallowed.
"I need to explain.""
"No.""
His eyes lifted.
"Please.""
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
"You helped frame my daughter.""
His face twisted.
"I know.""
"You watched everyone accuse her.""
"I know.""
"You watched Preston hurt her.""
"I didn't think he would—"
I stopped him.
"That sentence means nothing.""
He looked down.
"I made a mistake.""
"Again with that word.""
He sighed.
"Evelyn, I need you to understand. Rachel convinced me this was only about exposing someone.""
"Someone?""
He nodded.
"She said there was a person stealing from Preston.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
"You.""
I felt nothing.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Just exhaustion.
"She told you I stole from my brother?""
"She said you were manipulating the family trust.""
I almost smiled.
The irony was unbelievable.
"They accused my daughter of being a thief because they wanted people to believe I was one.""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I didn't know about Sophie.""
"But you knew enough to put the phone near her.""
He had no answer.
"Why did you do it?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Rachel promised me money.""
There it was.
The truth.
"How much?""
"Twenty thousand dollars.""
I stared at him.
Twenty thousand dollars.
That was the price of destroying a child's reputation.
"Did she tell Preston?""
"No.""
"What?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Preston didn't know everything.""
That caught my attention.
"What do you mean?""
"Rachel planned this.""
His voice lowered.
"She told Preston the phone would be found somewhere embarrassing. She never told him Daniel was planting it.""
I froze.
"So Preston didn't know?""
"Not about the setup.""
That complicated everything.
Because part of me wanted to believe Preston was manipulated.
That maybe he was just angry.
That maybe he was another victim.
But then I remembered.
He hit my daughter.
He accused her.
He watched her bleed.
Even if Rachel started the fire, Preston chose to pour gasoline on it.
"Why tell me this now?""
Daniel looked broken.
"Because Rachel is planning something else.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"I overheard her last night.""
"Where?""
"At Preston's house.""
"What did she say?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"She said the wedding failed.""
I waited.
"And she said if the trust couldn't be challenged legally...""
His voice became quieter.
"They would make sure you lost custody of Sophie.""
The world seemed to stop.
Not my money.
Not my reputation.
May you like
My daughter.
That was their next move.
