Chapter 8: The Secret Danielle Took to Her Grave

Marcus had spent the last three years believing he was protecting Jaylen.

Now he wondered if Danielle had spent those same three years protecting him.

That thought was almost impossible to accept.

Because Marcus knew what protection looked like.

Protection was showing up.

Protection was staying awake when your child had nightmares.

Protection was working extra shifts so the electricity stayed on.

Protection was being the person who never left.

That was the kind of protection Marcus understood.

Not hidden meetings.

Not secret files.

Not strangers appearing with pieces of a life he never knew existed.

But the more Marcus uncovered, the more he realized something painful.

Danielle had not hidden things because she didn't trust him.

She had hidden them because she believed the truth would put him in danger.

And somehow, that hurt almost more.

Because if she was right, then Marcus had spent years grieving a woman who was trying to save him.

And if she was wrong...

Then he had spent years being lied to by the person he loved most.

There was no version of the truth that didn't hurt.

Marcus drove without knowing where he was going.

His phone sat in the passenger seat.

Daniel had refused to tell him the location.

Not because he wanted to control him.

Because, according to Daniel, someone could be tracking the call.

Marcus hated that he believed him.

A few days ago, he would have called that ridiculous.

A conspiracy.

Something from a movie.

But a few days ago, he also believed his wife had no secrets.

His entire understanding of reality had changed.

When Daniel finally sent the address, Marcus didn't hesitate.

An abandoned storage building on the edge of the city.

The kind of place nobody noticed.

The kind of place where secrets could survive.

Marcus parked outside.

Before entering, he stopped.

He looked at his reflection in the window.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Like three years of grief had finally caught up with him all at once.

Then he thought of Jaylen.

And he opened the door.

Inside, the building was dark.

"Daniel?""

"Over here.""

Marcus followed the voice.

He found Daniel sitting beside a small table.

Jaylen was asleep on a couch nearby.

The moment Marcus saw him, every other thought disappeared.

He crossed the room quickly.

"Jaylen.""

His son woke immediately.

"Dad?""

Marcus grabbed him.

Held him.

Not gently.

Not carefully.

Like someone who had almost lost something precious.

Jaylen hugged him back.

"I knew you would come.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Of course I would.""

Behind him, Daniel looked away.

Giving them privacy.

After a few minutes, Marcus finally turned.

"What happened?""

Daniel stood.

"They entered your apartment about twenty minutes after you left.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You always say that.""

"Because it's true.""

"Then what do you know?""

Daniel pointed toward the table.

On it was a small device.

A phone.

A flash drive.

And a photograph.

Marcus immediately recognized the photograph.

The one left at his door.

"You took this?""

"No.""

"Then where did you get it?""

Daniel hesitated.

"From Danielle.""

Marcus stared.

"What?""

"She gave it to me.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"When?""

"The day before she died.""

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at Jaylen.

Then back at Daniel.

"You had that?""

"Yes.""

"For three years?""

"Yes.""

Marcus felt anger rise.

"Why?""

"Because Danielle told me not to give it to you unless someone started searching for Jaylen.""

Marcus laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he was exhausted.

"So she knew.""

"Yes.""

"She knew this would happen.""

"Yes.""

"She knew someone would come.""

Daniel nodded.

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

"Who took this?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Marcus stared at him.

"You're lying.""

Daniel looked surprised.

"What?""

"You know something.""

Daniel was quiet.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Every time you don't answer, I know.""

Daniel sighed.

"Danielle took this photo.""

Marcus froze.

"She took it?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because she wanted proof.""

"Proof of what?""

Daniel looked at him.

"That you were involved.""

Marcus felt cold.

"Involved in what?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus grabbed the photograph.

"I am tired of everyone protecting me from the truth.""

His voice echoed through the building.

"Tell me.""

Daniel looked at Jaylen.

Then back at Marcus.

"Three years ago, Danielle discovered that someone had been using your identity.""

Marcus frowned.

"What?""

"Your name. Your records. Your work history.""

"Why?""

"To access information.""

Marcus stared.

"Information about what?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"About Vale.""

Marcus shook his head.

"That makes no sense.""

"It does if someone wanted to make you look involved.""

Marcus felt a chill.

"You think someone was setting me up?""

"Yes.""

"For what?""

"To take the blame.""

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Him standing near Danielle's car.

A place he didn't remember.

A night he couldn't explain.

"Why don't I remember being there?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus looked up.

"Why?""

"Because Danielle found you before she died.""

Marcus stopped.

"What?""

"She found you unconscious.""

The room became silent.

Marcus felt like the floor moved.

"No.""

"Marcus.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"I was home.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Were you?""

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because suddenly memories started appearing.

Fragments.

Not complete.

A headache.

Rain against glass.

Danielle's voice.

Someone arguing.

A smell.

Gasoline?

Marcus grabbed the table.

"What happened to me?""

Daniel looked at him carefully.

"That's what Danielle was trying to figure out.""

"She didn't know?""

"No.""

"Then how did she know I was there?""

"Because she saw your car.""

Marcus looked up.

"My car?""

"Yes.""

Daniel pointed to the photograph.

"Your vehicle was parked nearby.""

Marcus felt sick.

"My car was there.""

"Yes.""

"But I don't remember.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's why Danielle was afraid.""

Marcus looked at Jaylen.

His son was still asleep.

Completely unaware.

"What happened to my memory?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

"Someone drugged you.""

The words landed like a weapon.

Marcus couldn't speak.

"How?""

"We don't know.""

"Danielle knew?""

"She suspected.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

All this time.

All these years.

He had thought he was the one who failed her.

But maybe someone had been attacking them both.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Because she thought whoever did it was still watching.""

Marcus looked around the abandoned building.

"Was she right?""

Daniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

Later that night, after Jaylen was asleep again, Daniel finally gave Marcus the flash drive.

"Danielle wanted you to have this.""

Marcus held it.

"What is it?""

"The truth.""

Marcus almost smiled.

"I've heard that before.""

Daniel looked at him seriously.

"This is different.""

"Why?""

"Because Danielle recorded it herself.""

Marcus froze.

"Recorded?""

"Yes.""

They found an old laptop in the storage room.

Daniel inserted the drive.

A single video appeared.

Created three years ago.

Marcus stared at the date.

The day before Danielle died.

His hands shook.

He pressed play.

For several seconds, the screen showed darkness.

Then Danielle appeared.

Older than the last memory he had of her.

Tired.

Afraid.

But still Danielle.

Marcus stopped breathing.

"Marcus...""

Her voice.

After three years.

Her actual voice.

His eyes filled instantly.

"Hi.""

She looked directly into the camera.

"I don't know if you will ever see this.""

A pause.

"But if you do, it means things didn't go the way I hoped.""

Marcus couldn't move.

Danielle continued.

"I need you to know something first.""

She looked down.

Then back up.

"I never stopped loving you.""

Marcus covered his mouth.

The pain was immediate.

Not because he doubted it.

Because hearing it after so long felt impossible.

"I know you will be angry.""

A small, sad smile.

"You should be.""

Marcus looked away.

Because she knew him.

She always knew him.

"I kept things from you.""

The video continued.

"But I need you to understand why.""

She took a breath.

"Adrian is not the biggest danger.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel went still.

On the screen, Danielle continued.

"The people who control Vale are afraid of one thing.""

A pause.

"Proof.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Proof of what?""

Danielle looked into the camera.

"The truth about Jaylen's birth.""

Marcus froze.

The room became silent.

Danielle continued.

"Marcus, Jaylen is not just connected to Adrian.""

Marcus felt his heartbeat increase.

"He is connected to something much bigger.""

A pause.

Then the words that changed everything.

"Because Jaylen was never supposed to survive.""

The video stopped.

The screen went black.

Marcus stared.

No one spoke.

Finally, he whispered:

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked at the dark screen.

And for the first time since Marcus met him...

Daniel looked afraid.

"I don't know.""

Marcus turned.

"You're lying.""

Daniel didn't deny it.

"Marcus...""

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked toward Jaylen.

Then at Marcus.

"Because if Danielle was right...""

His voice lowered.

"...Jaylen wasn't the secret they were trying to hide.""

A pause.

"He was the evidence.""

Marcus stared at him.

And for the first time, he understood.

Everyone had been fighting over Jaylen.

But nobody had told him why.

Not Adrian.

Not Daniel.

Not Danielle.

And maybe the reason was the most terrifying truth of all.

Because whatever happened three years ago...

Whatever Danielle discovered...

Whatever secret had followed them into the present...

It wasn't just about where Jaylen came from.

May you like

It was about what Jaylen represented.

And someone had already proven they were willing to kill to keep that secret buried.
