Calm

Chapter 1

The sound of a heavy suitcase rolling over someone’s foot usually warrants a quick apology. But the guy in the gray suit didn’t apologize. Instead, he shoved his elbow hard into the shoulder of the pregnant woman standing in front of him. She stumbled sideways, her hands immediately flying to her swollen belly to catch her balance against the metal boarding barrier.

"Go to the back," he snapped, not even lowering his voice. "Some of us actually have places to be."

The terminal at O'Hare was packed, one of those miserable holiday weekend bottlenecks where everyone is sweating and running on burnt coffee. We were all crammed into the narrow boarding lane. The pregnant woman—a young Black woman in a faded green maternity dress—had been standing there patiently for twenty minutes. She looked completely exhausted, her ankles visibly swollen over her worn-out slip-on shoes.

I dropped my own carry-on handle, stepping forward to say something. A few other people in the line murmured in disbelief, but the suit guy just puffed out his chest. He stepped into the spot he had just physically forced her out of, adjusting his watch like he had just swatted away a fly.

The woman didn't yell. She didn't curse or try to push her way back in. She just steadied herself, wrapped her arms protectively around her stomach, and looked right past his shoulder.

Her expression shifted from sudden shock to a quiet, unsettling calm. She didn't need to say a single word to him. She just kept her eyes locked on the person standing directly behind the man in the suit.

The businessman noticed her staring. He let out an annoyed huff and spun around, ready to bark at whoever was standing too close to him.

He froze.

His smug expression vanished instantly, his shoulders going completely rigid under his expensive jacket.

He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

The man had just chosen the absolute wrong woman to bully, and he was about to lose a lot more than his spot in line.
