Chapter 5: The Evidence Nobody Expected

By the afternoon, the story had changed.

Of course it had.

Vanessa never allowed herself to be the villain.

According to three different people who called me, she was “heartbroken.””

According to my aunt, she was “under a lot of pressure.””

According to my mother, she had “made one terrible mistake.””

One mistake.

Funny how one mistake could be used to describe something someone had been doing for years.

I was sitting on my couch when Olivia called.

The moment I answered, I knew something was wrong.

“Emily.””

Her voice was quiet.

“What happened?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“I found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“Videos from last night.””

I sat up.

“What videos?””

“The hotel had security cameras near the pool.””

I stopped breathing for a second.

Of course.

The entire time, I had been trying to convince people.

Trying to explain.

Trying to prove something everyone should have already understood.

But there was footage.

There was proof.

“Olivia…”

“I saw it.””

Her voice cracked.

“Emily, she didn’t just bump into you.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“I know.””

“No.””

She sounded upset.

“I don’t think you understand.””

A chill moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

“She looked around first.””

I went still.

“What?””

“She checked who was watching.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“She waited until everyone was laughing and talking.””

Olivia’s voice became softer.

“Then she pushed you.””

I closed my eyes.

Because that changed everything.

A careless action was one thing.

A cruel action was another.

But planning?

That was different.

“Can you send it to me?””

“I already did.””

My phone buzzed.

A video file appeared.

I stared at it.

Part of me didn’t want to open it.

Because once I saw it, I couldn’t pretend anymore.

I pressed play.

The quality wasn’t perfect.

The angle was distant.

But it was enough.

Enough to see Vanessa standing behind me.

Enough to see her look around.

Enough to see her place both hands on my back.

Enough to see me lose my balance.

Enough to see her laugh before anyone realized I was hurt.

I covered my mouth.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I was finally free from wondering.

I wasn’t imagining it.

I wasn’t exaggerating.

I wasn’t being dramatic.

My sister had made a decision.

And I had almost spent another night apologizing for it.

A message appeared.

From Vanessa.

*Vanessa: We need to talk.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another.

*Vanessa: Someone sent Daniel the video.*

My heart stopped.

A third message.

*Vanessa: You didn’t have to do that.*

I laughed.

Actually laughed.

Because even now…

Even with proof…

She wasn’t saying:

I’m sorry.

She was saying:

You exposed me.

I typed slowly.

*Emily: I didn’t send anything.*

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

*Vanessa: Then who did?*

I looked at Olivia’s name.

Then back at the screen.

For once, I didn’t rush to protect Vanessa.

*Emily: Someone who saw the truth.*

Her reply came immediately.

*Vanessa: You’re destroying my life.*

I stared at those words.

Then I answered.

*Emily: No. I’m stopping you from pretending you didn’t destroy mine.*

The message stayed unread for several minutes.

Then:

*Vanessa: You’re unbelievable.*

I put the phone down.

Because I finally understood.

Vanessa wasn’t afraid of losing me.

She was afraid of losing control.

That evening, my mother came over.

I knew before opening the door that she had come to defend Vanessa.

Mothers had instincts.

But daughters did too.

“She’s falling apart,” my mother said.

I didn’t invite her inside.

“She should.””

My mother looked shocked.

“Emily.””

“What?””

“She’s your sister.””

“And I’m her sister too.””

My mother looked away.

The silence between us was painful.

“I don’t understand how this happened.””

I looked at her.

“I do.””

She frowned.

“What?””

“You protected her every time.””

My mother’s expression changed.

“I never—”

“You did.””

My voice softened.

“You told me to be patient. To understand. To forgive.””

I swallowed.

“But nobody ever told her to stop.””

My mother had no answer.

Because she knew.

Somewhere deep down, she knew.

Vanessa hadn’t become this overnight.

She had simply never been forced to face consequences.

Until now.

And tomorrow, everyone would.

Because the wedding invitations had already been sent.

The venue was booked.

The guests had arrived.

And the entire world was about to watch Vanessa lose the one thing she valued most.

Her perfect image.
