Chapter 6: The Truth Vanessa Never Expected
Marcus returned home with a different kind of anger.
Not loud anger.
Not explosive anger.
The kind that came after a person finally understood everything.
Vanessa was sitting in the living room.
She looked up.
“You were gone all morning.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Marcus placed the folder on the table.
Her face changed immediately.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You went through my things?””
“No.””
He looked directly at her.
“I found what you hid.””
The silence was instant.
Vanessa slowly stood.
“Marcus…”
“Why?””
She said nothing.
“Why did you tell me Elena’s things were gone?””
“I was going to deal with them.””
“Three years?””
No answer.
“Three years you paid for a storage unit while telling me there was nothing left?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked frustrated.
“You were obsessed with keeping Elena alive.””
Marcus stared.
“She was my wife.””
“She was your past.””
“And Nia was her daughter.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“And I was trying to build a future.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You were trying to erase the past.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
He opened the folder.
“Did you make this list?””
Vanessa looked at it.
She didn’t answer.
“That’s what you thought Nia didn’t need?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“She had enough.””
Marcus looked at the page.
“Music lessons?””
“She wasn’t interested.””
“Because she quit after you told her it was too expensive.””
Vanessa looked away.
“Birthday parties?””
“She had family.””
“She had two friends she wanted to invite.””
“It wasn’t necessary.””
Marcus’s voice became colder.
“Who decides what is necessary for a child?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“You always make me the villain.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
He paused.
“You made choices. I’m just finally seeing them.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked hurt.
Then her expression changed.
Something harder appeared.
“You know what the problem is?””
Marcus waited.
“You never saw how hard it was for me.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“You’re telling me this is about you?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“Do you know what it feels like raising a child who reminds you every day that you’ll never be the first person she loved?””
Marcus stared.
There it was.
The truth.
Not kindness.
Not misunderstanding.
Resentment.
Vanessa had spent years competing with a child for a place in Marcus’s heart.
And Nia had paid the price.
“You should have gotten help for those feelings,” Marcus said quietly.
Vanessa looked shocked.
“You’re choosing her.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I’m choosing what is right.””
That sentence broke something.
Because Vanessa finally realized something.
Marcus wasn’t confused anymore.
He wasn’t the man who avoided arguments.
He wasn’t the man who believed every explanation.
He knew.
And there was no going back.
That evening, Marcus sat with Nia.
He placed Elena’s jewelry box in front of her.
Her eyes widened.
“Where did you find that?””
He swallowed.
“It was safe.””
Nia touched the box carefully.
Like it was fragile.
Like it was a piece of her mother.
“Can I open it?””
Marcus nodded.
Inside were memories.
A necklace.
A bracelet.
Letters.
A small photograph of Elena holding baby Nia.
Nia touched the picture.
“She looks happy.””
“She was.””
“Because of me?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Because she loved you.””
Nia held the picture close.
For the first time in years, she allowed herself to cry without apologizing.
Marcus watched his daughter mourn and heal at the same time.
But while they sat together, neither of them noticed Vanessa standing in the hallway.
Watching.
Listening.
And realizing something terrifying.
She had spent years trying to make Nia feel unwanted.
But now Marcus knew the truth.
