Chapter 9: The Final Lie Before the Truth
Ryan stood behind the curtain, watching the dark vehicle parked across the street.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Every instinct inside him told him something was wrong.
The car had been there for nearly fifteen minutes.
No movement.
No lights.
Just waiting.
Emily stood beside him.
“Are you sure it’s Diane’s car?””
Ryan nodded slowly.
“I know that car.””
His voice was quiet.
“It was always in the driveway when I was growing up.””
Emily looked outside.
“Who is with her?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
That answer bothered him more than anything.
Because after everything he had learned, he knew one thing.
The people who had hidden the truth for thirty-five years were not going to suddenly accept losing control.
“They know we’re close,” Michael said from behind them.
Ryan turned.
His father looked worried.
“They know you found Olivia.””
Ryan looked at the car again.
“Then why would Diane come here?””
Laura answered softly.
“Because she’s afraid.””
Everyone looked at her.
Laura continued.
“Diane has spent her entire life controlling the story.””
She looked toward the window.
“If she’s here, it means she knows the story is no longer hers.””
Ryan understood.
For the first time, Diane wasn’t acting like someone with power.
She was acting like someone desperate.
A few minutes later, the car door opened.
Ryan immediately stepped back.
A woman got out.
Diane.
She stood beneath the streetlight.
But she did not walk toward the house.
She simply looked at it.
Almost like she was saying goodbye.
Then the passenger door opened.
A man stepped out.
Ryan froze.
Even from a distance, something about him felt familiar.
Older.
Gray hair.
A sharp posture.
A presence that demanded attention.
Michael’s face changed.
“No.””
Ryan looked at him.
“You know him?””
Michael didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The fear in his eyes was enough.
“Who is that?””
Michael whispered:
“Daniel.””
The name felt heavier than before.
The man who had existed only through stories.
The man who had controlled lives without being seen.
The man who had remained hidden for decades.
He was real.
And he was standing outside Ryan’s home.
Daniel and Diane entered the house twenty minutes later.
Nobody welcomed them.
Nobody offered them a seat.
The atmosphere was completely different from the night before.
This was no longer a family conversation.
This was a confrontation.
Daniel looked around the room.
His eyes moved over the photographs.
The furniture.
The family life Ryan had built.
Then he smiled slightly.
“So this is what became of you.””
Ryan stared.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You have no idea how much effort went into making sure you had this life.””
Ryan felt anger rising.
“This life?””
He stepped forward.
“You mean the life built on lies?””
Daniel’s expression remained calm.
Too calm.
That bothered Ryan.
“You think truth is always better than peace?””
Ryan stared at him.
“You’re defending what happened?””
Daniel looked around.
“Everyone here has made mistakes.””
Michael immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Still pretending you’re innocent?””
Ryan noticed the tension.
“You two know each other.””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
Daniel smiled.
“Your father and I have known each other for a long time.””
Ryan looked at Michael.
“How?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“We were business partners.””
Ryan froze.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“Before everything happened.””
Michael looked away.
Ryan felt another piece of his life shift.
“You never told me.””
Michael swallowed.
“Because I was ashamed.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Ashamed because you trusted the wrong people.””
Ryan looked between them.
“What business?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel smiled.
“Your father had access to information.””
Ryan frowned.
“What information?””
Daniel looked at Laura.
Then back at Ryan.
“Information about your family.””
Ryan felt a chill.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother’s family had money.””
Laura looked uncomfortable.
Ryan turned.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“Your grandmother left behind a significant inheritance.””
Ryan stared.
“And?””
Daniel smiled.
“And you were the only child who could legally claim it.””
Silence.
The room felt frozen.
Ryan looked at Laura.
“Is this true?””
Laura nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Ryan closed his eyes.
Another secret.
Another piece of the puzzle.
Daniel stepped closer.
“That’s why you were taken.””
Ryan looked at him.
“Because of money?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
“Then why?””
Daniel looked at Diane.
For the first time, his confidence faded.
“Because Diane wanted to protect you.””
Ryan almost laughed.
“Protect me?””
Daniel nodded.
“From a world that wanted to use you.””
Ryan stared.
“And you?””
Daniel said nothing.
That silence was the first crack in his confidence.
Ryan noticed.
“You wanted the inheritance.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“I understand perfectly.””
His voice became stronger.
“You saw a baby as an opportunity.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re emotional.””
Ryan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at his family.
“I’m finally clear.””
Then Diane spoke.
Everyone turned.
“I need to tell him the truth.””
Daniel immediately looked at her.
“Diane.””
But she continued.
“I should have done this years ago.””
Ryan watched her carefully.
For the first time, she looked completely broken.
“Ryan…”
She struggled to speak.
“I didn’t take you because I hated Laura.””
Laura looked at her.
Diane looked away.
“I was jealous.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
“I saw how much she loved you.””
Her voice trembled.
“And I wanted that.””
Ryan listened.
“I wanted to be the person you needed.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“But then Daniel convinced me that I was saving you.””
Ryan looked at Daniel.
Diane continued.
“He told me Laura and Michael would destroy your future.””
Michael shook his head.
“You believed him.””
“Yes.””
Diane closed her eyes.
“I believed everything he told me.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Don’t do this.””
But Diane ignored him.
“Then when I realized I was wrong…”
She looked at Ryan.
“It was too late.””
Ryan felt conflicted.
Because this was the first time Diane had admitted the truth without defending herself.
“You could have told me.””
“I know.””
“You could have brought me back.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I was afraid you would hate me.””
Ryan looked at her.
The painful truth was that he did hate what she did.
But part of him still remembered loving her.
That was the cruelest part.
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
Ryan noticed.
“What is it?””
Daniel ignored him.
But the call ended quickly.
Then another sound came.
A notification.
From Ryan’s phone.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
His face changed.
Emily immediately asked:
“What?””
Ryan turned the screen around.
It was a photograph.
Taken from outside.
A picture of Lily playing in the backyard.
Ryan’s blood turned cold.
The message below said:
*You should have stopped searching.*
Everyone became silent.
Daniel looked at the phone.
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
Ryan noticed.
“You didn’t send this.””
Daniel said nothing.
Ryan stepped closer.
“You’re not the one threatening me.””
Daniel looked at him.
And slowly nodded.
“No.””
A pause.
“Someone else is.””
Everyone froze.
Ryan looked around.
The entire room suddenly changed.
Because all this time, they thought the enemy was Daniel.
But Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
Michael whispered:
“Who?””
Daniel stared at the message.
Then at Diane.
And his face turned pale.
“There is one person.””
Ryan waited.
“Who?””
Daniel answered:
“The person who started this.””
The room became silent.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“He was supposed to be gone.””
Ryan’s heart raced.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered:
“Your grandfather.””
Nobody moved.
Ryan stared.
“My grandfather is dead.””
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“No.””
The words destroyed the last bit of certainty.
“He disappeared.””
Ryan felt cold.
Just like everyone else.
Another disappearance.
Another lie.
Another secret.
Daniel looked at him.
“Your family’s biggest secret was never about who raised you.””
A pause.
“It was about why you were born.””
Ryan’s face went pale.
Before anyone could respond, the lights in the house suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then a sound came from outside.
A car door opening.
Someone walking toward the front entrance.
Slow.
Heavy.
Certain.
Three knocks echoed through the house.
The same three knocks that started everything.
Ryan stood frozen.
Because this time…
May you like
he knew the person behind the door was not coming to reveal the truth.
They were coming because they knew Ryan finally found it.
