Chapter 5: The Secret Behind The Perfect Smile

Emily did not sit down immediately.

She stood there like someone carrying a heavy object that she had been afraid to put down.

Finally, she placed the envelope on the table.

“I should have told someone before the wedding.””

Daniel looked at her.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I was scared.””

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Because fear was something I understood.

But fear had also kept me silent for years.

And silence had consequences.

“What is inside that envelope?”” Daniel asked.

Emily looked at him.

“Proof.””

The word changed everything.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were printed messages.

Screenshots.

Photos.

Documents.

I watched his expression as he read.

At first, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then anger.

“What am I looking at?””

Emily took a deep breath.

“Lauren knew about your family’s financial situation before she met you.””

Daniel looked up.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she didn’t accidentally become close to you.””

I felt a cold feeling in my stomach.

Emily continued.

“She researched you.””

Daniel laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes the truth is so unbelievable your mind rejects it.

“Why?””

Emily looked away.

“Because she wanted a certain life.””

I looked at the papers.

There were notes.

Information about Daniel’s career.

His company.

His investments.

Even details about my house.

My hands became cold.

“She knew about me?””

Emily nodded.

“She knew everything.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“What did she know?””

Emily hesitated.

Then she said:

“She knew you were planning to help your mother financially.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked at me.

That was true.

After my roof needed repairs, Daniel had offered to help.

I refused.

I always refused.

I didn’t want him to think I needed him.

But he insisted.

“She was angry about that,” Emily said.

“Why?””

“Because she thought your money should go toward your future together.””

Daniel stared at the documents.

“She didn’t want me helping my own mother?””

Emily shook her head.

“She said once you married her, your priorities would change.””

The room felt smaller.

I sat down slowly.

Not because I was surprised.

Because suddenly many things made sense.

The comments.

The coldness.

The way Lauren always looked at my house like it was something embarrassing.

She had not hated my garden.

She had hated what it represented.

A connection she could not control.

A history she could not replace.

Daniel continued reading.

Then he stopped.

“What is this?””

Emily looked nervous.

“I think you should read it.””

He did.

His face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

He handed me the paper.

It was a message between Lauren and one of her friends.

The words were cruel.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Cold.

Calculated.

“She’ll eventually move into assisted living anyway.””

I stopped reading.

My heart sank.

“She was planning…”

Emily nodded.

“She thought your mother would become inconvenient.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered:

“I almost married someone who hated the person who raised me.””

I reached for his hand.

But he pulled away.

Not from me.

From the pain.

“I defended her.””

His voice broke.

“I defended her when you were hurting.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I need to say this.””

He looked at me.

“I was so focused on proving I had built my own life that I forgot who helped me build it.””

Tears filled my eyes.

Because every mother secretly fears this.

That one day her child will leave and forget the road they traveled together.

But I never wanted Daniel to choose me over love.

I only wanted the person he loved to respect the woman who raised him.

Emily stood.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why did you come now?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because after what happened at the wedding, I realized I was helping her hide who she really was.””

She took a breath.

“I was afraid of losing my sister.””

“And now?””

Emily looked toward the door.

“Now I’m afraid I already did.””

After she left, Daniel remained silent.

The sun had gone down.

The garden outside was dark.

But the roses were still there.

Still alive.

Still growing.

That night, Daniel made a decision.

Not a decision about Lauren.

A decision about himself.

“I’m going to tell everyone the truth.””

I looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“People may judge you.””

“I know.””

“They may believe her.””

“I know.””

I touched his hand.

“Then why?””

He looked at the garden.

“Because you spent years protecting my happiness.””

May you like

His eyes filled with tears.

“Now it’s my turn to protect yours.””
