Chapter 8: What Was Sewn Inside

Wolf looked toward Ray.

“The jacket.””

Ray understood immediately.

It was still at the hospital.

Protected with Ava's belongings.

Wolf spoke into the phone.

“What do you think is inside it?””

Thomas Vale laughed softly.

“Mike was always theatrical.””

“You don't know.””

“I know enough.””

“Then why haven't you found it?””

Silence.

Wolf smiled without humor.

“That jacket sat in your granddaughter's house for eleven months.””

Thomas didn't respond.

“You had Curtis searching Mike's things. Cole asking questions. And you still don't know what you're looking for.””

“You're wasting time.””

“No.””

Wolf's voice hardened.

“You are.””

Thomas ended the call.

Daniels immediately turned to the tactical commander.

“They know we're positioned here.””

The commander nodded.

“We move.””

Wolf grabbed Daniels's arm.

“Wait.””

“What?””

“Thomas wants us focused on the cabin.””

“So?””

“So why tell me about the jacket now?””

Daniels understood.

“Distraction.””

“Exactly.””

Wolf looked toward the road.

“If the jacket matters, someone is going after Ava.””

Daniels called the hospital.

No answer from the officer assigned outside Ava's room.

He tried again.

Nothing.

His face changed.

“Move.””

Wolf and Ray were already running.

The hospital was twenty-eight minutes away.

Wolf made it in twenty-one.

Police vehicles arrived seconds behind him.

He ran through the emergency entrance.

“Fourth floor!””

A security guard shouted after him.

Wolf ignored him.

The elevator was too slow.

He took the stairs.

Second floor.

Third.

His lungs burned.

Fourth.

The corridor outside Sarah's room was chaos.

A nurse stood crying beside the wall.

One officer was unconscious on the floor.

Daniels arrived behind Wolf.

“Where are the kids?””

The nurse pointed.

“A man said there was a security threat. He had a badge.””

Wolf's stomach dropped.

“Where did he take them?””

“I thought he was police!””

“WHERE?””

“Service elevator.””

Wolf ran.

The elevator indicator descended.

3.

2.

1.

Wolf took the stairs again.

He reached the basement.

Empty corridor.

Loading dock.

A door stood open.

Cold night air rushed inside.

Outside, tires squealed.

Wolf reached the loading area just in time to see a dark SUV disappear around the corner.

“Ava!””

Nothing.

Daniels arrived.

“Plate?””

Wolf shook his head.

Then a voice came from behind a parked ambulance.

“Wolf!””

Noah.

He crawled out.

Wolf ran to him.

“Where's Ava?””

Noah was crying.

“She pushed me out.””

“What?””

“The man put us in the elevator. Ava hit the emergency stop and told me to run when the door opened.””

Wolf gripped his shoulders.

“And her?””

“He grabbed her.””

“What did he look like?””

“Old.””

“Thomas?””

Noah nodded.

“Grandpa.””

Wolf closed his eyes.

Thomas Vale had kidnapped his own granddaughter.

Again, the phone rang.

Wolf answered.

Ava's voice.

“Wolf?””

“Ava!””

“I'm okay.””

A man took the phone.

Thomas.

“Bring me the jacket.””

Wolf's hands curled into fists.

“You touch her—”

“She is my granddaughter.””

“You lost the right to say that.””

Thomas's voice sharpened.

“Midnight. Old Bennett Machine Works on Portland Avenue.””

Wolf checked the time.

11:19.

“Bring the jacket. No police.””

“And Ava walks out?””

“If you give me what I need.””

Call ended.

Daniels was already issuing orders.

Wolf shook his head.

“He'll see police.””

“We're not sending you alone.””

“Didn't say you were.””

Wolf looked at Noah.

“Where's the jacket?””

Noah wiped his face.

“Mom's room.””

They retrieved it.

Wolf laid Mike's jacket across a hospital table.

The original hidden pocket had contained the storage key and note.

But Thomas claimed something else remained.

Ray examined every seam.

“Maybe another pocket.””

They checked.

Nothing.

Then Noah spoke.

“Dad fixed that patch.””

Wolf looked at him.

“What?””

“The big one on the back.””

Black Ridge Riders.

Old design.

“When?””

“Before he died.””

Wolf ran his fingers around the patch.

One edge had newer stitching.

He carefully cut a single loose thread.

The lining separated.

Something thin slid out.

Not paper.

A memory card.

MicroSD.

Wolf stared.

“Mike, you paranoid genius.””

Daniels found an adapter.

They opened the card.

Hundreds of files.

Scanned ledgers.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Bank accounts.

Names.

Police officers.

Lawyers.

Business owners.

And Thomas Vale.

At the center of everything.

For nearly fifteen years, Thomas had used his position to protect a network stealing seized cash, manipulating estates, and laundering money through businesses.

Evelyn discovered it.

Then Mike.

Then Sarah.

Curtis had stolen from the Bennett estate, yes.

But compared with Thomas, Curtis was an amateur.

Wolf opened an audio file.

Thomas's voice filled the room.

“You keep Cole loyal. I'll handle Mike.””

Curtis answered.

“I never agreed to kill anybody.””

Thomas laughed.

“Nobody asked you to.””

Another recording.

Cole:

“What about Evelyn?””

Thomas:

“My wife should've learned when to stop digging.””

Ava's grandmother.

His own wife.

Wolf felt sick.

Daniels stared at the screen.

“This buries him.””

Wolf copied everything.

Three separate drives.

One went to state police.

One to Daniels.

One stayed with Wolf.

Then he placed the original card back inside the jacket.

At 11:53 p.m., Wolf arrived at Bennett Machine Works.

Alone.

At least visibly.

The abandoned factory stood dark against the Louisville skyline.

Broken windows.

Rusting doors.

Wolf entered carrying the jacket.

“Ava?””

His voice echoed.

A light came on.

Ava sat in a chair.

Not tied.

Thomas Vale stood behind her.

Seventy-one.

Silver hair.

Straight posture.

The polished dignity of a man who'd spent decades being obeyed.

Raymond Cole stood beside him.

Gun in hand.

Curtis sat several feet away, wrists bound.

Bruised but alive.

Ava looked at Wolf.

“Don't give it to him.””

Thomas smiled.

“She has Mike's stubbornness.””

Wolf held up the jacket.

“Let her walk.””

“First the jacket.””

“First Ava.””

Thomas sighed.

“You bikers and your codes.””

Wolf's eyes hardened.

“Better than hiding behind a badge.””

Cole stepped forward.

Thomas raised one hand.

“Easy.””

Wolf looked at Curtis.

“You alive?””

“Barely.””

Curtis gave a weak smile.

“Sorry about Mike.””

Wolf stared at him.

“Save it for Ava.””

Thomas extended his hand.

“The jacket.””

Wolf tossed it onto the concrete between them.

Thomas stared.

“Bring it.””

“No.””

Thomas looked annoyed.

Wolf nodded toward Ava.

“She brings it.””

Ava understood.

Thomas hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Fine.””

Ava stood.

She walked toward the jacket.

Picked it up.

Then continued toward Wolf.

Thomas's expression changed.

“Stop.””

She didn't.

Cole raised the gun.

Wolf froze.

Thomas said:

“Put the jacket down.””

Ava looked at Wolf.

Then suddenly threw it.

Not toward Thomas.

Toward Curtis.

Curtis caught it against his chest.

Cole turned instinctively.

That was enough.

Wolf lunged.

He hit Cole before the gun could swing back.

Both men crashed into a metal table.

The gun skidded away.

Ava ran.

Thomas grabbed her.

She screamed.

Curtis surged forward despite his bound hands and slammed his shoulder into Thomas.

Thomas fell.

Ava escaped.

Wolf drove Cole backward against the wall.

Cole punched him.

Wolf staggered.

Cole reached for a knife.

Then red dots appeared across his chest.

“DROP IT!””

State police flooded the factory.

Cole froze.

Thomas stared around in disbelief.

“No.””

Daniels entered.

“Raymond Cole, hands where I can see them.””

Cole dropped the knife.

Thomas remained on the floor.

His calm finally disappeared.

“You have no idea who you're dealing with.””

Daniels looked at him.

“Thomas Vale, you're under arrest.””

Thomas laughed.

“For what?””

Wolf picked up the jacket.

“For starters?””

He tapped the patch.

“Your son-in-law was smarter than you.””

Thomas's face changed.

Wolf knew.

He finally understood what had been inside.

Daniels handcuffed him.

Thomas stared at Ava.

“You think this ends anything?””

Ava looked at her grandfather.

“No.””

She wiped tears from her face.

“It starts everything.””

Thomas smiled strangely.

“You still don't know what happened to your father.””

Wolf stepped forward.

“We saw the video.””

“Video shows Cole at the car.””

Thomas looked at Ava.

“It doesn't show what killed Michael.””

Cole suddenly shouted:

“SHUT UP!””

Everyone turned.

Thomas laughed.

For the first time, Cole looked terrified of him.

Thomas continued.

“Ask Raymond why Mike was already dying before he reached the crash.””

Ava went pale.

Wolf stared at Thomas.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas smiled.

“Michael Bennett didn't die from the crash.””

“We know.””

“He didn't die from Cole's syringe either.””

Cole lunged.

Two officers restrained him.

“DON'T LISTEN TO HIM!””

Thomas looked directly at Ava.

“Your father was poisoned before he ever got into that car.””

Silence.

Wolf felt the victory disappear.

Ava whispered:

“By who?””

May you like

Thomas's smile faded.

“That's the one secret your mother never told you.””
