Chapter 12: The Person Nobody Expected To Be Guilty

The financial report arrived at midnight.

I was still awake.

I hadn't slept properly since the night Sophie and I walked into the Grand Hawthorne.

Too many questions.

Too many unanswered pieces.

I opened the file.

At first glance, it looked ordinary.

Transactions.

Vendor payments.

Consulting fees.

Nothing unusual.

Until Marcus pointed out one detail.

"Look at the company names.""

I zoomed in.

Three different companies.

All receiving monthly payments.

All connected to hotel operations.

"Why are we paying these companies?""

Marcus shook his head.

"We aren't supposed to be.""

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

"They aren't approved vendors.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then why are they receiving money?""

"That's what we need to find out.""

The next several hours uncovered something disturbing.

The companies were connected.

Different names.

Same ownership structure.

And the person controlling them?

Someone inside Ashford Hospitality Group.

Someone with authority.

Someone trusted.

At 5:30 a.m., Marcus found the answer.

He looked at the screen.

Then looked at me.

"I think you need to prepare yourself.""

I knew that tone.

"What?""

He turned the laptop.

The name appeared.

I froze.

Not Adrian.

Not Nathan.

Someone else.

Someone I never considered.

Brandon Cole.

The receptionist who first judged me.

The employee who denied my daughter a room.

The person who seemed like the smallest piece of the problem.

He wasn't just following orders.

He was benefiting from them.

I stared at the documents.

"How?""

Marcus explained.

Brandon had been receiving payments through a family-owned consulting company.

Small amounts.

Designed to avoid attention.

But consistent.

Monthly.

For over a year.

"He was being rewarded.""

Marcus nodded.

"For what?""

The answer was obvious.

But I needed to hear it.

"For steering certain guests away.""

I closed my eyes.

Everything came back.

The way Brandon looked at my clothes.

The way he treated the wealthy couple differently.

The confidence in his voice.

He wasn't making random decisions.

He was performing a role.

A role someone paid him to play.

We brought Brandon in that afternoon.

This time, he didn't walk confidently.

He looked nervous.

The moment he entered the room, he saw the documents.

And he knew.

"I can explain.""

Nobody said anything.

He sat down.

"I didn't know it would become this.""

I looked at him.

"What did you think would happen?""

He didn't answer.

"People would leave?""

Silence.

"Guests would feel unwelcome?""

Still silence.

"You thought that was acceptable?""

His eyes lowered.

"I needed the money.""

That sentence was familiar.

But it didn't excuse anything.

Everyone had struggles.

Everyone had problems.

But hardship didn't give someone permission to hurt others.

"Who paid you?""

He swallowed.

"I can't say.""

Marcus placed the documents on the table.

"You can.""

Brandon looked terrified.

"You're not the only one involved.""

That was when his face changed.

Because he realized something.

He wasn't being protected.

He was being abandoned.

"It was Nathan.""

I waited.

"Who else?""

Brandon hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Someone above Nathan.""

"Who?""

He looked at me.

And the answer shocked me.

"Someone you trust.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Who?""

Brandon looked down.

Then said:

"Marcus.""

The room went completely silent.

I turned slowly.

My best friend.

My partner.

The man sitting beside me through everything.

Marcus looked stunned.

"What?""

Brandon shook his head.

"I don't know if he knew everything.""

He looked terrified.

"But the payments were approved through his department.""

I stared at Marcus.

For the first time in seventeen years, I wondered if there was another person I never truly knew.

And that realization hurt more than anything else.

May you like

Because the truth I had been searching for wasn't just hidden in the company.

It was sitting beside me the entire time.
