Chapter 14: The Person Who Took Everything From Me
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The room around me disappeared.
The fire.
The smoke.
The people standing beside me.
Everything faded.
There was only one sentence.
*“I’m the person who killed him.””*
My father’s killer.
The person who had taken him away.
The person who had stolen twelve years of my life.
Was on the phone.
And I knew the voice.
That was the worst part.
I knew it.
“Say something, Nora.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
I couldn’t.
Because my mind was fighting itself.
The voice belonged to someone who had held my hand when I cried.
Someone who had been at my father’s funeral.
Someone who had told me everything would be okay.
Someone I trusted.
Someone I never questioned.
“Nora.””
My mother looked at me.
Her eyes were asking.
Who?
I slowly turned the phone toward her.
Not enough for her to hear.
Enough for her to see my face.
And she understood.
Her expression changed instantly.
“No.””
The word escaped her.
Everyone looked at her.
She whispered:
“No.””
I pressed the phone closer.
“Why?””
The person on the other end was silent.
Then:
“Because I had no choice.””
The same words.
Again.
No choice.
Everyone always had a reason.
Everyone always had a story.
But nobody ever thought about what their choices did to me.
“What did you do?””
My voice shook.
The person sighed.
“I knew this day would come.””
“Answer me.””
“I made a decision.””
“What decision?””
“To save you.””
I almost laughed.
A painful, angry sound.
“You killed my father to save me?””
The silence was the answer.
My heart broke.
Not because I didn’t believe it.
Because I did.
That was the terrifying thing.
The people who hurt us rarely believed they were villains.
They believed they were heroes.
“I loved your father.””
The voice softened.
“And I loved you.””
My eyes burned.
“Don’t.””
“Nora—”
“Don’t say that.””
I looked at everyone around me.
“My entire life, people have used love as an excuse.””
The room became silent.
“You loved my father.””
I swallowed.
“You betrayed him.””
“You loved me.””
My voice cracked.
“You lied to me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
The person didn’t respond.
And that silence hurt more than an argument.
Because it meant I was right.
“Where are you?””
I asked.
Everyone looked at me.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
No.
He knew what I was doing.
But I had already decided.
I needed answers.
“I can’t tell you.””
“Then why call?””
“Because they are coming.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“The people who know the file was opened.””
I looked toward the door.
The fear returned.
“Why warn me?””
A pause.
“Because despite everything…”
The voice became quieter.
“I still promised your father I would keep you alive.””
I closed my eyes.
My father.
Always my father.
Even now.
Even after death.
Everything came back to him.
“What did you do to him?””
Another silence.
Longer.
Heavier.
Then:
“I didn’t plan for him to die.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“I went to confront him.””
“Why?””
“Because he found out what I had done.””
“What did you do?””
“I made a deal.””
“With Richard Bennett?””
“Yes.””
The room shifted.
Everyone listened.
“I thought I could control the situation.””
A bitter laugh.
“I was wrong.””
“You gave them information.””
“Yes.””
“You helped them find him.””
“Yes.””
My mother closed her eyes.
Daniel looked away.
Evan stared at the floor.
Everyone was carrying guilt.
Everyone had blood on their hands.
“What happened that night?””
The voice became quiet.
“Your father knew.””
“What?””
“He knew I betrayed him.””
My breath caught.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he let you leave?””
A long pause.
“Because Thomas Whitmore was not like us.””
My eyes filled.
“He still believed people could be saved.””
The words hurt.
Because they sounded exactly like him.
“He told me something that night.””
“What?””
“He said…”
The person’s voice broke slightly.
“He said, ‘If you hurt me, I can survive. But if you hurt my daughter, I will never forgive you.’”
I covered my mouth.
My father.
Even at the end.
Still thinking about me.
“What happened?””
The voice trembled.
“Richard’s people arrived.””
“And?””
“I tried to stop them.””
“But you couldn’t.””
“No.””
Silence.
“I failed him.””
The honesty surprised me.
No excuse.
No defense.
Just failure.
“Who are you?””
I asked again.
This time, my voice was different.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just needing the truth.
The person breathed out.
“My name is…”
The call suddenly cut.
I froze.
“Hello?””
Nothing.
I looked at the screen.
Disconnected.
“Who was it?””
Daniel’s voice was urgent.
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because I wasn’t ready to say it.
But everyone was waiting.
I whispered:
“Someone my father trusted.””
My mother stepped closer.
“Who?””
I looked at her.
And said the name.
The room changed.
Because everyone knew.
Everyone remembered.
And everyone realized the same thing.
The person who betrayed my father had been beside us all along.
“It can’t be.””
Evan’s voice was barely audible.
But I knew.
Because I had thought the same thing.
“It is.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the photograph on the computer screen.
The same person standing beside my father.
Smiling.
Trusted.
Loved.
My father’s closest friend.
My mother’s confidant.
The person who gave the speech at his funeral.
The person who comforted me.
The person who watched me grow up.
The person everyone believed was loyal.
“Henry.””
The name filled the room.
Nobody spoke.
Because Henry Wallace wasn’t just a betrayer.
He was family.
Then Daniel suddenly looked toward the door.
“We need to leave.””
I turned.
“Why?””
His face was serious.
“Because Henry wasn’t the only one who heard that message.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Daniel pointed at the computer.
“The system sent an alert.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He looked terrified.
“The alert didn’t only tell Henry.””
“What else?””
“It sent the location.””
My blood ran cold.
“To who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Because the answer appeared outside.
Headlights.
Multiple vehicles.
The same black cars.
The same people who had followed us all night.
My mother grabbed Lily’s blanket.
“We need another exit.””
“There isn’t one.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked around.
Then toward the old archive shelves.
“There is.””
My mother stared.
“Thomas built one?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Daniel moved toward the wall.
He pressed a hidden button.
Nothing happened.
Again.
Nothing.
Then he looked at me.
“Nora.””
“What?””
“Your father designed this.””
I stared.
“For me?””
“Yes.””
“What do I do?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“You activate it.””
I stepped closer.
“How?””
He pointed toward a small scanner.
My hand.
And then Lily.
Again.
Another choice my father made.
A choice that required my daughter.
I hated that.
I hated that she was involved.
But there was no time.
I placed my hand on the scanner.
Nothing.
Then Lily’s tiny hand touched mine.
The system activated.
A section of the wall moved.
A hidden passage opened.
Everyone stared.
My mother whispered:
“He really planned everything.””
I looked into the darkness.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He planned for us to have a chance.””
That was different.
Because my father wasn’t controlling my future.
He was giving me one.
A loud crash came from outside.
They were inside.
Time was gone.
Daniel looked at me.
“Go.””
I looked around.
At Evan.
At my mother.
At Daniel.
At Henry’s betrayal.
At everything my life had become.
Then I saw Evan standing there.
Not running.
Not protecting himself.
Waiting.
“Nora.””
I looked at him.
“I know you hate me.””
I said nothing.
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
Still nothing.
“But let me do one thing right.””
My heart hurt.
Because despite everything…
A part of me still remembered the man I loved.
The man who held my hand when we found out we were having Lily.
The man who cried when he first saw her.
The man who ruined everything.
And maybe the hardest truth was that both versions were real.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“But if you betray me again…”
His expression became serious.
“I won’t.””
I held his gaze.
Then I stepped into the passage.
My mother followed.
Daniel followed.
Evan followed.
The hidden door began closing.
But before it completely shut, I saw someone enter the archive room.
A figure.
A familiar figure.
Not Henry.
Someone else.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone who looked directly at me.
And smiled.
The door closed.
Darkness surrounded us.
“What is it?””
My mother whispered.
I couldn’t answer.
Because I recognized the person who had entered.
And that was impossible.
Because I had seen that person die.
Years ago.
But as we moved deeper into the passage, I heard the voice echo through the walls.
“Nora.””
I stopped.
Everyone looked at me.
The voice came again.
“You finally know the truth.””
My blood ran cold.
Because it wasn’t Henry.
It wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Margaret.
It was someone from my past.
Someone I had buried.
Someone who was supposed to be gone forever.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Don’t listen.””
But it was too late.
The voice whispered:
“Your father lied to you about me.””
The passage went silent.
And I knew.
The final secret wasn’t about who betrayed my father.
May you like
It was about why he had hidden the truth from me.
And the answer was waiting at the end of the tunnel.
