Chapter 7: The Secret Buried Beneath His Perfect Image

For the first time since I left Derek, I felt afraid in a completely different way.

Before, I had been afraid of what he would do.

Now, I was afraid of what I did not know.

That was somehow worse.

Because the things I knew about Derek were already painful enough.

The anger.

The control.

The manipulation.

The way he could make me feel like I was the problem even when I was the one bleeding.

But Amanda’s words stayed in my mind.

He never told you the whole truth.

Those words followed me everywhere.

While I fed Lily.

While I changed her clothes.

While I sat beside my father at the kitchen table.

Even when I closed my eyes, I heard them.

There was another secret.

Something Derek had hidden.

Something he was afraid I would discover.

And the hardest part was realizing that after three years of marriage, I still didn’t know everything about the man I shared a home with.

My father waited until we got home before asking questions.

That was something I appreciated about him.

He never pressured me in emotional moments.

He always gave me time to process.

But I could tell he was concerned.

He had spent his entire career reading people.

And he knew when something had changed.

“What did Amanda say?””

I placed my phone on the table.

“She said Derek has a secret.””

My father became still.

“What kind of secret?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did she explain?””

I shook my head.

“She was scared.””

My father looked toward the window.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked:

“Did Derek ever make you feel like he was hiding parts of himself?””

The question surprised me.

Because the answer came immediately.

“Yes.””

My father looked back at me.

“When?””

I thought about it.

At first, nothing came.

Then everything did.

Small moments.

Little things I had ignored.

“His phone.””

My father waited.

“He was always protective of it.””

“How?””

“He never left it anywhere.””

I frowned.

“I thought that was normal.””

“It can be.””

“But…”

I looked down.

“But he changed his passwords constantly.””

My father nodded.

“Anything else?””

I swallowed.

“He didn’t like talking about his childhood.””

“Why?””

“He said his family was complicated.””

My father’s expression changed slightly.

“Complicated how?””

“I don’t know.””

And that was the truth.

I knew almost nothing about Derek’s past.

I knew the version he gave me.

His father was difficult.

His mother was distant.

His childhood was unhappy.

But whenever I asked for details, he shut down.

I used to think I was respecting his privacy.

Now I wondered if I had simply been accepting silence.

The next morning, Amanda came to my father’s house.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had not slept.

Before she even sat down, she apologized.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“For what?””

“For waiting this long.””

I looked at her.

“You’re here now.””

She nodded.

But she still looked guilty.

“I need to tell you everything.””

My father sat nearby.

Not interfering.

Just listening.

Amanda took a deep breath.

“When Derek and I were kids, our father was violent.””

The room became quiet.

I had heard Derek mention his father before.

But never like this.

“He drank a lot,” Amanda continued.

“And when he was angry, everyone in the house knew.””

I looked at her.

“Did Derek experience that?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

A sadness crossed her face.

“He was young. Too young to understand what was happening.””

I listened carefully.

“But something changed when he got older.””

“What?””

“He started becoming like him.””

The words hit me.

Not because they surprised me.

Because Derek himself had said something similar.

I don’t want to become like my father.

Amanda continued.

“At first, it was just his temper.””

She looked down.

“Then it became control.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw it.””

She looked at me.

“I saw him with his girlfriends before you.””

I froze.

“Before me?””

Amanda nodded.

“Derek was always charming at first.””

Of course.

“He would make women feel special.””

I swallowed.

“Then?””

“Then he started needing everything his way.””

The room felt smaller.

“He would apologize afterward.””

My eyes closed.

Because I knew that pattern.

“He always apologized.””

Amanda nodded.

“That was how he kept people.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to ask why she didn’t warn me.

Why nobody warned me.

Why I had to discover everything after I was already hurt.

But when I looked at Amanda, I saw something familiar.

Regret.

The same regret I carried.

Because sometimes people stay silent not because they don’t care.

Sometimes they stay silent because they are afraid.

“I should have told you before you married him,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought you were different.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“I thought you made him better.””

Those words hurt.

Because I had thought the same thing.

I thought my love would change him.

I thought marriage would calm him.

I thought a baby would soften him.

But people do not transform because someone loves them harder.

They transform because they choose to.

Amanda reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“I found this after he came to my house.””

My father leaned forward.

“What is it?””

Amanda looked nervous.

“I don’t know if this will matter.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a stack of papers.

The first page made my stomach drop.

It was a police report.

Dated eight years earlier.

Before I met Derek.

I looked at Amanda.

“What is this?””

She swallowed.

“Something Derek never told you.””

I read the first few lines.

My hands started shaking.

The report involved an ex-girlfriend.

A woman named Rachel.

I looked closer.

There were allegations of harassment.

Threatening messages.

Property damage.

My heart raced.

“Did he do this?””

Amanda looked down.

“I don’t know everything.””

That answer bothered me.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

She sighed.

“Derek told me it was a misunderstanding.””

The same words.

Always the same words.

A misunderstanding.

An accident.

A reaction.

Never a choice.

“What happened to Rachel?””

Amanda hesitated.

“She left town.””

I stared at the report.

My stomach felt sick.

Because suddenly, pieces were connecting.

The anger.

The apologies.

The excuses.

The need for control.

Derek had not suddenly become this person after we got married.

He had been hiding who he was.

My father took the documents to Rachel, my attorney.

The response was immediate.

“This changes things.””

I sat across from her office.

“What does it mean?””

She organized the papers carefully.

“It shows a possible pattern.””

I nodded slowly.

“But it’s old.””

“Yes.””

“Does that matter?””

“It depends.””

“On what?””

“Whether there are similarities.””

I understood.

The past alone was not enough.

But the pattern mattered.

And Derek had spent years creating one.

That evening, Derek called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

Not because I wanted to talk.

Because I wanted to hear what he would say.

“Emily.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“What?””

A pause.

“I heard Amanda talked to you.””

My heart started beating faster.

“You mean testified?””

“No.””

His voice hardened slightly.

“I mean talked.””

I said nothing.

“You went digging into my past?””

There it was.

Not concern.

Not explanation.

Anger.

“You hid things from me.””

“You don’t understand.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re right.””

A pause.

“I don’t understand.””

“Because you only heard one side.””

I looked at Lily sleeping nearby.

“Your side?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“Derek, that’s always the problem.””

“What?””

“You always believe your version is the only version.””

Silence.

Then his voice lowered.

“You’re trying to destroy me.””

“No.””

I answered quietly.

“I’m trying to protect myself.””

“You’re keeping my daughter from me.””

My jaw tightened.

“Lily is not a weapon.””

“I love her.””

I believed he loved her.

That was the complicated part.

People can love someone and still hurt them.

“I never said you didn’t.””

“Then why are you doing this?””

I looked out the window.

“Because loving someone doesn’t mean ignoring what they do.””

He was quiet.

Then he said something that chilled me.

“You have no idea what you’re starting.””

I froze.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

But his voice said something different.

“I’m warning you.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My father walked into the room.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“He knows.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Knows what?””

“That I found out.””

He nodded slowly.

“Then we move carefully.””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Do you think Derek is dangerous?””

My father was silent.

That scared me.

Because my father had always had answers.

Finally, he said:

“I think anyone who believes they are losing control can become unpredictable.””

I looked toward Lily.

And I understood.

This was no longer just about proving what happened.

It was about preparing for what came next.

Three days later, something arrived at the house.

A package.

No return address.

My father found it on the porch.

He brought it inside immediately.

“Did you order anything?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a small flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

My blood went cold when I saw the handwriting.

Derek’s.

The note contained only one sentence.

*If you want the truth, watch this.*

My father looked at me.

Neither of us moved.

Because suddenly, we both understood.

Whatever was on that drive…

Derek wanted me to see it.

And that meant only one thing.

He was either trying to scare me.

Or he knew something I didn’t.

My father picked up the flash drive.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“Are you ready?””

I stared at the tiny piece of plastic in his hand.

I thought about the woman I used to be.

The woman who avoided painful truths.

The woman who believed silence kept peace.

That woman was gone.

I nodded.

“Yes.””

My father connected the drive.

The screen lit up.

A video file appeared.

Created eight years earlier.

The title was simple.

*For Emily.*

My heart stopped.

Because I had never met Derek eight years ago.

I had no idea why my name was on a file that old.

And as the video began to load…

I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Derek’s biggest secret was not something from his past.

It was something connected to me.
