Chapter 7: The Man Who Stole Another Life

Evelyn Mercer had spent six months mourning her husband.

She had mourned the sound of his footsteps in the hallway.

She had mourned the way he made coffee every morning before anyone else woke up.

She had mourned the empty space beside her in bed.

But now, standing inside the old warehouse with Nathan’s forged signature in front of her, she realized something that made her grief feel even heavier.

She wasn’t only mourning the man she lost.

She was mourning the life she thought she understood.

Because while she was trying to survive Nathan’s death, someone else had been trying to steal everything Nathan built.

His work.

His reputation.

His family.

His identity.

Detective Blake picked up the document carefully.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa Cole looked exhausted.

“I found it in Cole’s office.””

“Your ex-husband’s office?””

She nodded.

“He kept copies of everything.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“Why would he keep evidence against himself?””

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“Because Cole always believed he was smarter than everyone else.””

That sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Evelyn thought about the videos.

The hidden camera.

The messages.

The way Cole left clues behind.

Not because he wanted to be caught.

Because he thought nobody would ever understand what they meant.

Vanessa sat down.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

Evelyn remained standing.

“I’ve heard enough lies.””

“I know.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“That’s why I’m telling you everything now.””

Detective Blake nodded.

“Start from the beginning.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“When Cole and I were married, he was different.””

Evelyn almost laughed.

Everyone said that.

Everyone claimed Cole had changed.

But nobody ever explained how.

“He wasn’t violent at first,” Vanessa continued.

“He was charming. Intelligent. He made people believe he was always the victim.””

Evelyn thought about all the family gatherings.

Cole telling stories about how life had treated him unfairly.

Cole joking about being the forgotten brother.

Cole smiling while everyone comforted him.

“He hated Nathan,” Vanessa said.

“Why?””

“Because Nathan represented everything Cole believed he deserved.””

She looked at the floor.

“Nathan was successful. People trusted him. He had a family that loved him.””

Evelyn looked away.

“That doesn’t explain murder.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“It doesn’t.””

The warehouse was silent.

Then Detective Blake asked:

“What did you mean when you said you gave him the idea?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I told him once that if he wanted Nathan’s respect, he needed to stop fighting Nathan and start thinking like him.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

“I meant he should learn from Nathan. Build his own success.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“But Cole didn’t hear it that way.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“He heard that Nathan’s life was something he could take.””

A chill moved through Evelyn.

The detective opened the folder.

“What are these documents?””

Vanessa looked at them.

“Business transfers.””

She pointed.

“Cole was slowly moving ownership.””

Evelyn leaned closer.

The papers showed transactions.

Small amounts.

Small changes.

Things that would have been easy to miss.

“He was stealing from Nathan?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Vanessa sighed.

“By pretending to help.””

That was Cole’s pattern.

He never forced his way in.

He made people invite him.

“He convinced Nathan he was trying to repair their relationship,” Vanessa explained.

“But he was actually getting access.””

Evelyn looked at the documents.

The business.

The insurance.

The medication.

Everything connected.

Every move had been calculated.

“He wanted Nathan gone.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did he keep me and Wren around?””

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation scared Evelyn.

“Answer me.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because you were part of the life he wanted.””

Evelyn felt sick.

Not because she didn’t understand.

Because she did.

Cole had not seen them as people.

He had seen them as pieces.

A house.

A family.

A reputation.

A perfect image.

Something he could possess.

Detective Blake received a call.

He stepped away.

Evelyn watched Vanessa.

“You knew about the medication.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“A month before Nathan died.””

Evelyn’s anger returned.

“A month?””

Her voice rose.

“You knew for a month?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I was trying to find proof.””

“My husband was dying.””

“I know.””

“You knew something was happening.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

The answer surprised Evelyn.

Not because it was a good reason.

Because it sounded real.

Fear had controlled everyone.

Nathan was afraid.

Wren was afraid.

Evelyn was afraid.

And fear had allowed Cole to move freely.

“I thought if I confronted him without proof, he would destroy me.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“He already knew I was watching him.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Did he hurt you?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Not physically.””

That answer said enough.

Before Evelyn could ask more, Detective Blake returned.

His expression had changed.

“What happened?”” Evelyn asked.

“We found Cole.””

Everyone froze.

“Where?””

“He was released on bail.””

Evelyn felt a wave of anger.

“How?””

“His attorney argued there wasn’t enough evidence for the original charges yet.””

The detective continued.

“But that’s not the reason I’m concerned.””

“What happened?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Cole disappeared after leaving custody.””

The room went cold.

“He ran?””

“We don’t know.””

Evelyn’s heart began racing.

Because she knew Cole.

She knew his need for control.

His need to finish what he started.

“He’s coming back.””

Nobody answered.

But nobody disagreed.

On the drive home, Evelyn couldn’t stop thinking about Nathan’s final video.

If you’re seeing this, then I was right.

Cole wasn’t trying to scare me.

He was trying to replace me.

The words repeated in her mind.

Replace.

Not destroy.

Replace.

When Evelyn arrived home, she immediately checked on Wren.

Her daughter was asleep on the couch with Helen beside her.

For a moment, Evelyn felt peace.

Then she noticed something.

The front door.

It was unlocked.

Her entire body went still.

She was certain she locked it before leaving.

“Helen.””

The older woman woke immediately.

“What?””

“Did you open the door?””

Helen looked confused.

“No.””

Evelyn slowly stood.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Detective Blake had warned them not to enter alone.

But instinct took over.

She checked the living room.

Nothing.

Kitchen.

Nothing.

Then she saw it.

A photograph on the table.

A photograph that had not been there before.

Evelyn picked it up.

Her hands shook.

It was a picture of Nathan.

Standing outside the house.

Taken days before he died.

On the back was handwriting.

Nathan’s handwriting.

Except Nathan had never written this.

Evelyn turned it over.

Three words.

I KNOW EVERYTHING.

Her breathing stopped.

Then Wren screamed upstairs.

“Mom!””

Evelyn ran.

She reached the bedroom in seconds.

Wren was standing near the window.

Crying.

Pointing outside.

“There was someone there.””

Evelyn grabbed her.

“Where?””

Wren pointed toward the backyard.

A shadow moved beyond the fence.

Gone in an instant.

The police arrived minutes later.

But whoever had been there was already gone.

Detective Blake searched the yard.

Then he found something.

A small object buried near the fence.

A phone.

Not Cole’s.

Not Nathan’s.

Someone else’s.

The screen was cracked.

But still working.

One message was open.

Sent to Cole.

Tomorrow.

We finish what Nathan started.

Evelyn stared at the phone.

Tomorrow.

Not tonight.

Not someday.

Tomorrow.

Someone had a plan.

Someone was still working with Cole.

And suddenly Evelyn understood the most terrifying part.

Cole Mercer was not running away.

He was preparing.

The man who wanted Nathan’s life had lost control of the story.

May you like

But someone else was still writing it.

And they were about to make their final move.
