Chapter 7: The Night Marcus Hale Forgot

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The longer he looked at it, the less familiar it became.

That was the part that scared him.

Not recognizing someone else.

Recognizing himself.

The man in the picture was younger.

Thinner.

The face had fewer lines.

The eyes looked different.

But it was him.

Lieutenant Marcus Hale.

Standing among officers he remembered.

Officers he had worked with.

Officers whose names were still attached to cases, awards, and commendations throughout the department.

And beside him was Daniel.

Smiling.

Alive.

Happy.

Like the world had not already started falling apart.

Marcus turned the photograph over again.

The words remained.

*You were there the night everything started.*

*You just don't remember.*

His fingers tightened around the paper.

"I don't understand.""

Nobody answered.

He looked at Elena.

"You knew.""

She shook her head.

"Not this.""

"Don't.""

His voice sharpened.

"Don't tell me you don't know.""

"I knew Daniel believed you were involved somehow.""

Marcus felt anger rise.

"Involved?""

Elena looked at the photograph.

"Not willingly.""

That stopped him.

"What does that mean?""

"It means Daniel didn't think you were part of The Circle.""

She paused.

"He thought you were used by them.""

Marcus looked away.

Used.

The word felt worse than accusation.

Because accusations could be fought.

Used meant someone had taken something from him.

His trust.

His loyalty.

His memories.

"What night?""

Jamal looked at him.

"Marcus?""

Marcus ignored him.

He stared at Elena.

"What night?""

"The night Daniel discovered the evidence.""

"What evidence?""

"The evidence that connected everything.""

Marcus looked at the photo.

"Where was this taken?""

Elena studied it.

"Outside the old training building.""

Marcus frowned.

The answer meant something.

A memory moved beneath the surface.

A hallway.

A conversation.

A folder.

A voice.

Then it disappeared.

Like smoke.

Marcus closed his eyes.

He hated that feeling.

Knowing something was there.

Knowing his own mind was keeping it from him.

"What happened to my memory?""

Elena looked at him.

"Daniel thought someone helped you forget.""

Marcus opened his eyes.

"Someone?""

She nodded.

"Someone with access.""

Jamal looked confused.

"Access to what?""

Elena looked at Marcus.

"Your medical records.""

The room went silent.

Marcus felt cold.

"Medical records?""

"After Daniel died, you collapsed.""

Marcus remembered.

Barely.

He remembered the funeral.

The days afterward.

The anger.

The drinking.

The sleepless nights.

But there was something else.

A hospital.

Bright lights.

A doctor speaking.

Someone telling him he had experienced trauma.

Marcus looked at Jamal.

"Did you know about this?""

Jamal shook his head.

"No.""

Nobody knew.

Not even him.

That realization hurt.

Marcus had spent his career investigating other people's secrets.

And somehow, the biggest secret in his own life had been hidden from him.

"Who treated me?""

Elena hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

"Who?""

"Doctor Alan Mercer.""

The name meant nothing.

Then suddenly it did.

Marcus remembered.

Not the doctor.

The name.

A file.

A signature.

A report he had seen years ago.

"Mercer worked with the department.""

"Yes.""

"For psychological evaluations.""

"Yes.""

Marcus stared.

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because Dr. Mercer died.""

Elena nodded.

"Two years after your brother.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

Another person connected to Daniel.

Another person gone.

"How?""

"Car accident.""

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Too many coincidences.

Too many people disappearing.

"What did he do to me?""

Elena didn't answer.

"Elena.""

She looked at him.

"We don't know.""

That was the first answer tonight that sounded completely honest.

"We only know Daniel suspected something.""

Marcus looked at the evidence room around him.

"Then why hide this?""

"Because Daniel was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"That if you remembered everything at once, you would make the same choice he made.""

Marcus frowned.

"What choice?""

Elena's voice became quiet.

"Choosing the truth over your life.""

Marcus looked down.

The photograph suddenly felt heavier.

He wanted to reject everything.

He wanted to say this was impossible.

A conspiracy.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

But every time he tried, another piece appeared.

The video.

The letter.

The hidden box.

The photograph.

His own missing memories.

"Find Aaron.""

Jamal looked surprised.

"Now?""

"Yes.""

"He is still being processed.""

"Then bring him here.""

Jamal nodded.

Before leaving, he stopped.

"Marcus.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You should know something.""

"What?""

"Whatever happened twenty years ago...""

Jamal glanced around the evidence room.

"You're not the only one who doesn't know.""

Then he left.

Marcus remained silent.

Elena watched him.

"You trust him.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Marcus looked toward the doorway.

"Because he asked questions.""

She frowned.

"What?""

"The people who lied to me always had answers.""

He looked at her.

"Jamal has questions.""

For the first time that night, Elena almost smiled.

"Daniel would have liked him.""

Marcus looked away.

"Don't talk like you knew him better than me.""

Elena accepted the anger.

"You loved him.""

"Yes.""

"And that's why he kept you out.""

Marcus looked at her.

"What?""

"He knew you would follow him.""

Marcus's expression changed.

"You're saying he pushed me away to protect me.""

"Yes.""

Marcus laughed quietly.

"That's something he would do.""

The memory came again.

A small apartment.

Daniel sitting at a kitchen table.

Marcus angry.

"You think you can fix everything.""

Daniel looking at him.

"No.""

A pause.

"But I can try.""

Marcus had walked away.

He never apologized.

That was the part that hurt.

Not knowing.

Not the conspiracy.

Not The Circle.

The fact that his last conversation with his brother had ended with anger.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

Elena answered softly.

"Because he knew you.""

Marcus looked at her.

"He knew you would choose him over yourself.""

The door opened.

Jamal returned with Aaron.

The young man looked even more nervous than before.

Marcus placed the photograph on the table.

Aaron saw it.

His face changed.

"You found it.""

Marcus watched him.

"You know this picture?""

Aaron nodded.

"My father showed it to me.""

"Why?""

"Because he wanted me to understand.""

"Understand what?""

Aaron looked at Marcus.

"That everyone in that picture had a choice.""

Marcus pointed at himself.

"And me?""

Aaron looked uncomfortable.

"You were different.""

"How?""

"You didn't know.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Didn't know what?""

Aaron looked at Elena.

She nodded.

"Tell him.""

Aaron swallowed.

"My father said Daniel trusted you too much.""

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

"Meaning?""

"He said you were the only person who could expose them.""

"Then why didn't I?""

Aaron looked down.

"Because you helped them.""

The room went completely still.

Marcus stared.

"What did you say?""

Aaron looked terrified.

"I said you helped them.""

Marcus stepped forward.

Jamal immediately moved between them.

"Marcus.""

But Marcus wasn't angry at Aaron.

He was angry at the words.

"Explain.""

Aaron shook his head.

"I don't know everything.""

"Then tell me what you know.""

"My father said there was a meeting.""

"When?""

"The night before Daniel died.""

Marcus felt his heartbeat change.

"What meeting?""

"An emergency meeting.""

"Where?""

Aaron looked at the photograph.

"That building.""

The old training building.

The same place.

Marcus felt something unlock.

A memory.

Not complete.

Fragments.

A hallway.

A door.

Daniel shouting.

Someone saying his name.

A flash.

Then darkness.

Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.

Jamal noticed.

"Marcus.""

"I'm okay.""

He wasn't.

He knew that now.

Something had happened.

Something his mind had buried.

"What happened at the meeting?""

Aaron answered slowly.

"My father said Daniel brought evidence.""

Marcus nodded.

"Then?""

"He said you arrived.""

Marcus looked up.

"I arrived?""

"Yes.""

"What happened?""

Aaron hesitated.

"He said you took the evidence.""

The room went silent.

Marcus shook his head.

"No.""

Aaron didn't argue.

"My father said Daniel trusted you with it.""

"No.""

"Then later...""

Aaron stopped.

Marcus's voice became colder.

"Later what?""

Aaron looked at him.

"Later Daniel disappeared.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

The pain was immediate.

But behind the pain was something else.

A memory.

A door opening.

Daniel's face.

Fear.

Not fear of Marcus.

Fear for Marcus.

A sentence.

A sentence Marcus had forgotten.

*You can't remember this.*

Marcus opened his eyes.

"I was there.""

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked at the photograph.

"I was there that night.""

Elena stepped closer.

"What do you remember?""

Marcus shook his head.

"Not enough.""

He looked at the evidence shelves.

"But I remember Daniel was scared.""

"What else?""

Marcus touched his forehead.

A headache began building.

"I remember him saying something.""

"What?""

Marcus forced himself.

"He said...""

The words came slowly.

Like pulling something buried from the bottom of the ocean.

"He said they already knew.""

Elena frowned.

"Who?""

Marcus looked at her.

"The people we were looking for.""

A pause.

"And he said one more thing.""

"What?""

Marcus looked at the badge on his uniform.

The same badge he had worn for years.

The badge Daniel had warned him about.

His voice dropped.

"He said the worst thing wasn't that they were inside the department.""

Everyone waited.

Marcus continued.

"The worst thing was...""

He looked at the photograph.

"...they had already trained us to protect them.""

Nobody spoke.

Then every light in the evidence room went out.

Complete darkness.

Jamal immediately drew his weapon.

"Nobody move.""

A second later, the emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Dim.

Warning lights.

Marcus looked around.

The evidence room door was open.

It had been closed.

And the metal box containing Daniel's photograph was gone.

Someone had entered.

Someone had taken the evidence.

Someone had been waiting for them to find it.

Marcus walked toward the doorway.

On the floor was a single piece of paper.

He picked it up.

Only one sentence was written.

Not Daniel's handwriting.

Someone else's.

*You finally remembered.*

Marcus looked up.

And for the first time that night, he understood something.

May you like

The enemy wasn't afraid of the truth being discovered.

They were afraid of Marcus Hale remembering it.
