Calm

Chapter 9: The Night My Father's Secret Finally Came Home

The highway looked exactly the same.

That was the cruelest part.

After five years of imagining this place, after five years of wondering what really happened, I expected something different.

Something dramatic.

Something that matched the pain I carried.

But the road was ordinary.

Cars passed.

Streetlights flickered.

People drove home without knowing that somewhere along this stretch of pavement, one man's life had ended and another person's entire world had fallen apart.

I stood beside my car, staring at the place where my father had supposedly lost control.

The official report said it was an accident.

A wet road.

A mechanical failure.

A tragic mistake.

Five years ago, I accepted that explanation because I had no choice.

Tonight, I stood here knowing everything I had been told was a lie.

Behind me, Thomas, my mother, and Victor waited.

None of them wanted me to come alone.

None of them trusted Daniel.

Neither did I.

But I needed to see him.

I needed to look him in the eyes.

Because there was something about Daniel Walker that everyone kept missing.

Everyone talked about him like he was a monster.

A powerful man who destroyed people.

A man who manipulated everyone around him.

And maybe he was.

But monsters didn't usually call their victims and ask them to learn the truth.

Unless they had another reason.

A black sedan appeared in the distance.

Everyone became quiet.

The vehicle slowed.

Stopped.

The driver's door opened.

Daniel Walker stepped out.

No security team.

No lawyers.

No expensive smile for cameras.

Just Daniel.

For the first time since I met him, he looked like a normal person.

Tired.

Older.

Almost human.

Almost.

Thomas stepped forward.

"Emma, stay behind me.""

I ignored him.

Daniel noticed.

A small smile appeared.

"Your father would be proud.""

I hated hearing that from him.

"You don't get to talk about my father.""

Daniel nodded.

"Fair.""

The answer surprised me.

I expected arrogance.

A threat.

A lecture.

Instead, he simply stood there.

"I know what you think of me.""

I laughed softly.

"You assaulted me.""

His expression changed slightly.

Regret.

Real regret.

"What I did to you was wrong.""

I stared.

"That's it?""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"But I know an apology doesn't erase it.""

The wind moved between us.

I studied him carefully.

Because this was the man everyone feared.

And somehow, he looked exhausted.

"Why am I here?""

Daniel looked toward the road.

"Because this is where your father died.""

"I know.""

"No.""

His eyes moved back to mine.

"This is where your father was murdered.""

The words still hurt.

Even after everything.

"Who did it?""

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Then my mother.

Then Victor.

Finally, he looked at me.

"Victor Hale.""

Silence.

Nobody reacted.

Not immediately.

Because sometimes the biggest lies sounded believable for one second.

Then reality returned.

I looked at Victor.

He didn't move.

Thomas immediately shook his head.

"Don't listen to him.""

Daniel smiled.

"Of course you would say that.""

Victor's expression remained calm.

"You're running out of options, Daniel.""

Daniel looked at him.

"No.""

He laughed quietly.

"I'm finally telling the truth.""

I stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Both men stopped.

"I am done watching people talk around me.""

I looked at Daniel.

"You say Victor killed my father.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because your father found out what Victor was really doing.""

Victor laughed.

A cold, humorless sound.

"You expect her to believe that?""

Daniel ignored him.

"Your father discovered that Walker Holdings wasn't controlled by me alone.""

I narrowed my eyes.

"Then who controlled it?""

Daniel looked at Victor.

"Victor.""

The silence was immediate.

My mother covered her mouth.

Thomas stared.

I looked at Victor.

"No.""

Victor didn't answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because innocent people usually defended themselves.

Victor just stood there.

Waiting.

"You have something to say?"" I asked.

Finally, Victor spoke.

"Yes.""

His voice was calm.

"Daniel is telling half the truth.""

My stomach tightened.

Of course.

Another half truth.

"Explain.""

Victor looked at me.

"Your father discovered Daniel was being controlled.""

"By you?""

"Not exactly.""

"Then who?""

Victor looked away.

"Someone above both of us.""

I almost laughed.

"Another secret person?""

"No.""

His expression became serious.

"An organization.""

I shook my head.

"This is getting ridiculous.""

"I know how it sounds.""

"Because it sounds like everyone is inventing a bigger villain.""

Victor nodded.

"And that's exactly why they survived.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Is this true?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation mattered.

Finally, he said:

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

The man I thought was the villain was admitting someone else existed.

"Why would you tell me?""

Daniel looked at the road.

"Because your father was the only person who ever tried to stop them.""

That surprised me.

"You respected him?""

Daniel's face changed.

For a moment, he looked genuinely ashamed.

"Yes.""

I didn't expect that.

"Then why did you hurt him?""

Daniel looked down.

"I didn't.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"You're lying.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Am I?""

Thomas froze.

Because suddenly, everyone was looking at him.

Including me.

Daniel continued.

"Tell her where you were the night her father died.""

Thomas didn't answer.

My heart sank.

Again.

"Thomas.""

He looked at me.

"I told you.""

"You told me you were with my mother.""

"Yes.""

"And?""

Thomas swallowed.

"And I was supposed to meet your father afterward.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Why?""

His silence was painful.

"Because I was stopped.""

"By who?""

Thomas looked at Victor.

My entire body went cold.

"Victor?""

Thomas nodded.

"He told me if I went to your father, I would get us both killed.""

I looked at Victor.

"Why?""

Victor answered quietly.

"Because I knew what was about to happen.""

"Then you knew?""

"Yes.""

My anger exploded.

"You knew my father was going to die?""

Victor closed his eyes.

"I knew someone wanted him dead.""

"And you did nothing?""

The question came out louder than I expected.

Victor looked at me.

"I tried.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"You watched.""

His face showed pain.

"Yes.""

That answer broke something inside me.

Because for five years, I searched for a villain.

And now I realized something worse.

Sometimes people didn't destroy your life because they hated you.

Sometimes they destroyed it because they were too afraid to act.

"What happened that night?"" I asked.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel answered.

"Your father had evidence.""

"About what?""

"About the organization controlling Walker Holdings.""

"And?""

"He planned to expose everyone.""

My mother whispered:

"He wanted to go public.""

Daniel nodded.

"But someone leaked his plan.""

My eyes moved between them.

"Who?""

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel looked at Thomas.

The same way he had looked at him before.

Like he already knew.

Thomas's face changed.

"Stop.""

Daniel ignored him.

"The person who betrayed your father wasn't the person you think.""

I looked at Thomas.

Then Victor.

Then my mother.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at me.

"It was someone your father trusted more than anyone.""

My mother's face went pale.

"No.""

Thomas looked devastated.

Victor said nothing.

I felt sick.

Because I knew.

Before Daniel said the name.

I knew.

"Who?""

Daniel whispered:

"Your mother.""

Everything stopped.

My mother looked like she had been physically hit.

"No.""

I looked at her.

"Mom?""

She couldn't speak.

Thomas stepped forward.

"Daniel is lying.""

But he didn't sound certain.

He sounded desperate.

My mother finally looked at me.

And the expression on her face told me everything.

Not guilt.

Not exactly.

Pain.

"I didn't mean for him to die.""

The words destroyed me.

I couldn't hear anything after that.

I stared at her.

The woman I had spent my life waiting for.

The woman I had blamed.

The woman I had missed.

"I didn't...""

Her voice broke.

"I never wanted your father hurt.""

I stepped back.

"Then what happened?""

She cried silently.

"I was scared.""

The highway noise disappeared.

"I thought if I gave Daniel the information he wanted, they would leave us alone.""

My voice became quiet.

"You gave him information?""

She nodded.

"About the investigation.""

My chest hurt.

"What information?""

"Where your father was meeting Thomas.""

I closed my eyes.

The truth finally arrived.

Not as a dramatic revelation.

Not as a moment of relief.

Just pain.

My mother continued.

"I didn't know they were going to kill him.""

Nobody moved.

"I thought they wanted to scare him.""

Her voice cracked.

"I thought I could fix it.""

I almost laughed.

Because that was the same mistake everyone made.

Everyone thought they could control monsters.

Everyone thought they could make deals with people who had no limits.

"You chose yourself.""

My mother cried harder.

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt.

"But I spent every day after trying to undo what I did.""

I looked away.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Emma.""

I looked at him.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

Because I wasn't ready to hear anything else.

Five years.

Five years searching for the person responsible.

And the truth was more complicated than I wanted.

My mother betrayed my father.

But she didn't kill him.

Thomas hid the truth.

But he didn't abandon him.

Victor knew danger was coming.

But he didn't stop it.

Daniel built the machine that destroyed everyone.

But he wasn't the one who pulled the final trigger.

Everyone was guilty.

Everyone was innocent.

And that was somehow worse.

Then a sound cut through the night.

A gunshot.

Everyone froze.

The car window behind me shattered.

Thomas grabbed me and pulled me down.

People shouted.

Another shot.

Daniel moved toward my mother.

Victor looked toward the darkness.

"He's here.""

I looked up.

"Who?""

Victor's face went pale.

"The person who started all of this.""

Another shot.

The lights above us flickered.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

Calm.

Familiar.

A voice I never expected.

"Emma.""

Everyone froze.

Because the voice wasn't a stranger.

It was someone from my past.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been missing for years.

And when the person stepped into the light...

I finally understood my father's last warning.

May you like

The person closest to the truth...

Was also the person closest to me.
