Chapter 10: The Weapon They Saved for the Right Moment

Ethan Vance had spent most of his life building things.

Companies.

Relationships.

A reputation.

But there was one thing he had never built.

A defense against people who knew him too well.

That was the danger of trust.

When you trusted someone, you gave them more than information.

You gave them access.

Access to your decisions.

Your weaknesses.

Your fears.

Your mistakes.

And Victor Hale had spent years collecting pieces of Ethan's life.

Not to understand him.

To prepare against him.

Ethan sat in the quiet corner of the hotel lounge long after Claire left.

The conversation replayed in his mind.

A scandal.

That was Victor's plan.

Not a business disagreement.

Not a leadership challenge.

A scandal.

Something public.

Something damaging.

Something that could make people question whether Ethan Vance deserved to lead the company he created.

He understood strategy.

That was why the idea frightened him.

Victor wasn't trying to defeat Ethan in a boardroom.

He was trying to destroy trust.

And trust was the foundation everything was built on.

His phone buzzed.

Daniel.

Ethan answered.

"We need to talk.""

Daniel immediately noticed his tone.

"What happened?""

"Victor had a plan.""

"What kind of plan?""

Ethan looked around.

Then lowered his voice.

"A plan to damage me.""

Silence.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

Daniel sighed.

"Ethan...""

"What?""

"Do you know what it is?""

"Not yet.""

The words bothered Daniel.

"Then how do we know it's real?""

Ethan thought about that.

A fair question.

He didn't have the full picture.

Not yet.

But he had learned something during the investigation.

The absence of evidence did not mean the absence of a problem.

"Because Victor prepared for my return.""

Daniel became quiet.

"He expected you to come back.""

"Yes.""

"And he expected you to fight.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Ethan looked at the city lights.

"Because he knows me.""

Daniel didn't answer.

Because that was the most unsettling part.

Victor knew Ethan's principles.

He knew Ethan wouldn't ignore what happened.

He knew Ethan would investigate.

He knew Ethan would protect employees.

And he had prepared accordingly.

"Where do we start?"" Daniel asked.

Ethan looked at the files.

"The board.""

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for the following afternoon.

No announcements.

No preparation.

Just a simple message:

"Mandatory strategic discussion.""

That was enough to make everyone nervous.

Thomas Reed arrived early.

That alone caught Ethan's attention.

Thomas was never early.

He believed arriving early made people think you were waiting.

He preferred making others wait.

But today, he was already seated when Ethan entered.

The two men looked at each other.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Thomas smiled.

"Ethan.""

"Thomas.""

"It's good to see you.""

"Is it?""

The smile disappeared slightly.

"I hear you've been asking questions.""

"I have.""

"About Victor.""

"Yes.""

Thomas leaned back.

"Victor was a talented consultant.""

"Was?""

Thomas noticed the word.

"You seem certain something happened.""

"I know something happened.""

"And what exactly?""

Ethan placed a folder on the table.

"An attempt to change this company without my knowledge.""

Thomas looked at the folder.

Then back at Ethan.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"It is.""

"Do you have proof?""

Ethan held his gaze.

"Enough to ask better questions.""

Thomas smiled slightly.

"That sounds like you.""

"What does?""

"Always searching for a bigger story.""

Ethan frowned.

"Sometimes there is one.""

"Sometimes people create one because they don't like reality.""

The words were carefully chosen.

Ethan noticed.

Thomas was not defending Victor.

Not directly.

He was attacking Ethan's interpretation.

A classic strategy.

"If Victor was simply improving operations," Ethan said, "why was there a transition plan?""

Thomas's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"What transition plan?""

Ethan watched him.

"You know exactly what I'm talking about.""

The room became quiet.

Finally, Thomas sighed.

"Ethan, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"Companies evolve.""

"Yes.""

"They cannot remain frozen because of one person's vision.""

Ethan looked at him.

"My vision built the company.""

"And your vision also created limitations.""

The sentence landed.

Not because Ethan agreed.

Because Thomas truly believed it.

"What limitations?""

Thomas leaned forward.

"You became too attached to the idea that kindness was always the answer.""

Ethan remained silent.

"There are realities in business.""

"I understand realities.""

"Do you?""

Thomas's voice became sharper.

"Because reality is that employees leave. Costs increase. Competition grows.""

"Yes.""

"And sometimes leaders have to make unpopular choices.""

Ethan nodded slowly.

"There is a difference between unpopular choices and losing your values.""

Thomas smiled sadly.

"That's exactly why Victor was useful.""

Ethan noticed.

"You admit he was useful.""

"Of course.""

"How?""

"Because he was willing to do what you weren't.""

The answer confirmed more than Thomas realized.

Ethan looked at him.

"You wanted someone else to make the decisions you didn't want to make.""

Thomas didn't respond.

And that silence was enough.

After the meeting, Ethan returned to his suite.

Lily was coloring at the table.

She looked up.

"Daddy.""

"Yes?""

"Why do adults always whisper when they talk about serious things?""

Ethan smiled.

"Do we?""

"Yes.""

She pointed.

"Like that.""

He laughed.

"You notice everything.""

"Mommy said I was like her.""

The smile faded slightly.

"She did?""

"Yes.""

"What else did she say?""

Lily thought.

"She said people who are scared sometimes become mean.""

Ethan looked at his daughter.

"That's very smart.""

"Was Mommy scared?""

"Sometimes.""

"Did she become mean?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because she chose to be kind.""

Lily nodded.

"Then people can choose.""

Ethan smiled.

"Yes.""

That night, after Lily slept, Ethan received an email.

No subject.

No sender name.

Only an attachment.

A video file.

His heart tightened.

He opened it.

The recording showed a conference room.

The quality was poor.

But the voices were clear.

Victor.

Thomas.

And another person.

Ethan leaned closer.

The third person was hidden from view.

Victor spoke first.

"The timing matters.""

Thomas answered.

"He won't react until he knows the full story.""

"Exactly.""

The third voice spoke.

A voice Ethan recognized.

Immediately.

His face changed.

No.

Impossible.

Victor continued.

"Once the information becomes public, he loses credibility.""

Thomas asked:

"And if he fights back?""

Victor laughed.

"He won't.""

"Why?""

"Because the evidence involves the one thing he cares about most.""

Ethan stopped breathing.

The one thing he cared about most.

The video continued.

The third person spoke again.

"We need to make sure Lily is not involved.""

Ethan froze.

His daughter.

Why were they talking about Lily?

Victor answered:

"She won't be.""

Thomas asked:

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

A pause.

"Because Ethan's weakness has always been the same.""

The screen showed Victor leaning forward.

"He protects people.""

The video ended.

Ethan sat completely still.

The room felt colder.

Because this was no longer just about his company.

It was personal.

Someone had studied him.

They knew his values.

They knew his family mattered.

They knew exactly where to hurt him.

His phone rang.

Daniel.

Ethan answered slowly.

"Daniel.""

"Did you get the file?""

Ethan froze.

"How do you know?""

"Because I sent it.""

A pause.

"You sent it?""

"Yes.""

"Where did you get it?""

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"From someone inside the board.""

Ethan stood.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"Daniel.""

"I swear.""

Ethan believed him.

Because Daniel sounded afraid.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"The person in the video.""

Ethan looked at the dark screen.

"You recognized them.""

It wasn't a question.

Daniel went silent.

"Who is it?""

A long pause.

Then Daniel answered.

"Ethan...""

"Who?""

Finally:

"It's someone from your family.""

The room seemed to stop.

"My family?""

"Yes.""

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

"Who?""

Daniel whispered the name.

And Ethan dropped into his chair.

Because suddenly every piece moved.

Every hidden meeting.

Every secret decision.

Every protected file.

All of it led back to one person.

Someone he never considered.

Someone who had been near him his entire life.

Someone who knew exactly how to reach him.

The name Daniel said was:

"Robert Vance.""

Ethan's older brother.

For years, Robert had stayed away from company operations.

He had always claimed he wanted nothing to do with business.

He was family.

Not a partner.

Not an executive.

Not a competitor.

But now his voice was on the recording.

And Ethan had no idea why.

The next morning, Ethan would have to confront the person he never expected to become his enemy.

His own brother.

And the hardest truth was waiting.

May you like

Because sometimes the people who know your heart best...

are also the people who know exactly how to break it.
