Calm

Chapter 8: The Man Who Started the Game

Emily Carter had faced enemies who wanted her to lose.

She had faced people who wanted her to surrender.

But she had never faced something like this.

An enemy who wanted her to doubt everything.

Every relationship.

Every memory.

Every person she had trusted.

That was the true weapon.

Not money.

Not influence.

Not power.

Doubt.

Emily sat inside her vehicle outside the command facility, staring at the message left behind by the mysterious caller.

“He went to find the person who started all of this.””

Your husband.

Ryan.

For days, Emily had viewed Ryan as the center of the betrayal.

The man who lied.

The man who manipulated.

The man who allowed his mother to humiliate her.

And he had done those things.

But now she understood something more complicated.

Ryan had not built the machine.

He had stepped into it.

Someone had found his weaknesses.

His insecurity.

His desire to feel important.

And they had turned those weaknesses into a weapon.

Emily started the engine.

There was one person who could answer the question.

Ryan.

Ryan Carter sat alone in a small apartment across town.

Not their house.

Not anymore.

The place felt temporary.

Like a waiting room.

He had spent the last two days watching his life collapse.

His accounts were restricted.

His reputation was damaged.

His marriage was over.

And the people who promised him everything had disappeared.

Thomas was gone.

Victor from the financial company stopped answering.

His mother had stopped explaining.

Everyone had left him with the consequences.

For the first time, Ryan was alone with himself.

And that terrified him.

The door opened.

Ryan immediately stood.

Then froze.

Emily walked inside.

She did not look angry.

That worried him more.

Anger was predictable.

Calm was not.

“Emily.””

She closed the door.

“Sit down.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Are you here to destroy me?””

“No.””

The answer surprised him.

“Then why are you here?””

“To understand.””

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Understand?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

Emily looked at him.

“That is exactly why.””

Ryan sat slowly.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Emily placed a photograph on the table.

Ryan looked at it.

His face changed.

The photo showed him.

Thomas.

Whitmore.

Walker.

The old meeting.

The moment he thought nobody knew about.

“Where did you get this?””

“That does not matter.””

Ryan looked away.

“You were involved.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

She expected denial.

Excuses.

A lie.

But he admitted it.

“How long?””

Ryan swallowed.

“Three years.””

Emily remained silent.

“Tell me everything.””

Ryan rubbed his face.

“I met Thomas through someone else.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s true.””

“Then explain.””

Ryan looked down.

“Three years ago, I was angry.””

Emily said nothing.

He continued.

“I felt like I was disappearing.””

The words were difficult for him.

“I was your husband, but everywhere we went, people saw Colonel Emily Carter.””

His voice became bitter.

“They respected you. They admired you. They asked about your career.””

He looked at her.

“And I felt like I was standing behind you.””

Emily studied him.

There it was.

The weakness.

The insecurity.

The thing someone had used.

“What happened next?””

“Someone approached me.””

“Who?””

“A man named Victor.””

“The financial company.””

Ryan nodded.

“He told me he could help me build something.””

“A business?””

“Yes.””

Emily leaned forward.

“And what did he want?””

Ryan hesitated.

Then answered.

“Information.””

The room became quiet.

“What kind of information?””

“Nothing classified.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Ryan.””

“I swear.””

He looked desperate.

“I never gave anyone military secrets.””

Emily watched him carefully.

“Then what?””

Ryan looked away.

“Your schedule.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“My schedule?””

“Where you traveled. Meetings. Public events.””

Emily felt a cold sensation.

Not because the information was classified.

Because it was personal.

Someone had been tracking her.

“How did you justify that?””

Ryan’s face changed.

“I told myself it was harmless.””

“Of course you did.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt more than anger.

Ryan looked down.

“I thought they were helping me.””

“Helping you do what?””

He swallowed.

“Make you choose me.””

Emily stared at him.

There it was.

The truth.

Not a master plan.

Not a genius strategy.

Just a person who wanted control over someone he could never become.

“Your mother knew.””

“Yes.””

“Whitmore?””

Ryan shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Thomas?””

Ryan looked up.

“He tried to stop it.””

That surprised her.

“Explain.””

“Thomas found out what they really wanted.””

“What?””

Ryan’s voice lowered.

“You.””

Emily remained silent after leaving Ryan’s apartment.

The confession changed some things.

But not enough.

Because there were still unanswered questions.

Why was Whitmore involved?

Why was Walker involved?

Who was Victor really working for?

And why had Thomas disappeared?

She returned to the command facility.

Daniel was waiting.

“You talked to him.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He was involved.””

Daniel sighed.

“I was afraid of that.””

“But he was not the leader.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You believe him?””

“I believe he is guilty.””

A pause.

“But I also believe someone used him.””

Daniel nodded.

“That matches what we found.””

Emily looked at him.

“What did you find?””

Daniel opened his laptop.

“A hidden account.””

“Whose?””

“That is the problem.””

He turned the screen.

Emily looked.

The account had no obvious owner.

Only transactions.

Large transfers.

Multiple companies.

Multiple countries.

And one repeated reference.

A code.

“E.C.””

Emily stared.

Her initials.

“What is that?””

“We don’t know.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

Someone had created a financial network around her identity.

Not just her money.

Her name.

Her reputation.

Her influence.

“Find the origin.””

“We are trying.””

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“Find who created it.””

Daniel nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Emily watched.

“What happened?””

Daniel ended the call.

“Walker.””

“What about him?””

“He contacted us.””

Emily stood.

“Where?””

“He wants to meet.””

The meeting location was an old military training facility.

Abandoned.

Remote.

Perfect for someone who did not want to be found.

Emily arrived with Daniel.

But she went inside alone.

James Walker stood in the center of the building.

He looked exhausted.

Not like a criminal.

Like someone who had been running for too long.

“Emily.””

She stopped several feet away.

“James.””

His eyes moved to her shaved head.

For a second, sadness crossed his face.

Then disappeared.

“I heard what happened.””

“Then you know why I’m here.””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

Walker looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

“That is not an explanation.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“It’s an admission.””

Emily waited.

Walker took a breath.

“Three years ago, I discovered something.””

“What?””

“A plan.””

“Created by who?””

“I don’t know.””

She narrowed her eyes.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because it is true.””

Walker stepped closer.

“I found financial records connecting private companies to military personnel.””

“And you reported it?””

“Yes.””

“To who?””

Walker looked at her.

“General Whitmore.””

Emily went still.

“What happened?””

“He told me he would handle it.””

“And?””

“He warned me not to continue investigating.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

Walker looked down.

“Because he said he was protecting the Army.””

“Was he?””

Walker looked back at her.

“I don’t know anymore.””

The answer bothered her.

Because it sounded honest.

“What happened after?””

“I kept investigating.””

“And Thomas?””

“He found me.””

Emily listened.

“He told me he was trying to expose the same thing.””

“So why did he disappear?””

Walker’s face changed.

“Because he found the person above Whitmore.””

Emily froze.

“Who?””

Walker opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

A sound echoed through the building.

A door closing.

Emily turned instantly.

Someone was there.

Walker looked toward the entrance.

His expression changed.

“No.””

“What?””

“He found us.””

“Who?””

Walker whispered:

“The person who started everything.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness filled the room.

Emily reached for her weapon.

Then a voice came from the shadows.

A voice she recognized.

A voice that should have been impossible.

“Colonel Carter.””

Her blood ran cold.

Because the person standing there was someone she had buried in her past.

Someone who had every reason to want revenge.

Someone who knew exactly how to destroy her.

The lights flickered back on.

Emily stared.

And for the first time in years…

She had no idea who the enemy was.

May you like

Because the person in front of her was not a stranger.

It was someone she once trusted with her life.
