Chapter 6: The Last Place Ray Wanted Forgotten

The Pine Ridge Motel looked different at night.

The same lights.

The same balconies.

The same empty parking spaces.

But now every shadow felt like it was holding a secret.

The police had secured the area.

The Iron Brothers remained nearby.

And Ethan stayed close to his parents.

Nobody wanted him anywhere near Ray again.

But Hank knew something.

People like Ray rarely ran away from the places where their lies began.

They returned.

Because they believed they still controlled the story.

At midnight, Officer Miller received the call.

A motion sensor near the motel had been triggered.

Someone was there.

Hank grabbed his jacket.

David stepped forward.

“No.””

Hank looked at him.

“I’m coming.””

“You’re Ethan’s father.””

David’s voice was steady.

“And that’s exactly why.””

Hank studied him.

Then nodded.

“Stay behind us.””

They moved quietly through the parking lot.

The balcony above room 214 was empty.

Or looked empty.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“You people really don’t know when to quit.””

Ray stepped forward.

Everyone froze.

He looked different.

Desperate.

Broken.

The confidence was gone.

Hank stared at him.

“You came back.””

Ray smiled bitterly.

“This was never about money.””

David stepped forward.

“Then what was it about?””

Ray looked toward Ethan’s room.

“Winning.””

Nobody expected that answer.

Ray laughed quietly.

“You think people like me care about the money?””

Hank’s eyes narrowed.

“Then what do you care about?””

Ray looked at Ethan.

“I care about proving people can be erased.””

The words made everyone sick.

“You wanted to erase a child?””

Ray shrugged.

“I wanted to prove nobody was looking.””

Hank stepped closer.

“You were wrong.””

Ray smiled.

“No.””

He looked around.

“You were just lucky.””

Then he reached into his jacket.

Everyone reacted.

But Ray didn’t pull a weapon.

He pulled out a small envelope.

He threw it onto the ground.

David picked it up.

Inside was a document.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

Ray smiled.

“The part nobody knows.””

Hank looked at him.

“Explain.””

Ray stared at David.

“Ask him.””

Everyone turned.

David looked confused.

“What?””

Ray laughed.

“Ask him why he never told Ethan the truth.””

The silence was immediate.

Ethan looked at his father.

“Dad?””

David’s face changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

Hank noticed.

Something was wrong.

“What truth?””

David didn’t answer.

Ethan stepped back.

“Dad?””

David closed his eyes.

And for the first time since arriving at the motel…

He looked like someone carrying a secret.

Ray smiled.

“See?””

He whispered.

“Everybody lies.””

Hank stared at David.

The road had uncovered Ray’s lies.

But now another question remained.

What truth had Ethan’s father been hiding?

And why did Ray know about it?
