Chapter 8: The Stranger Who Knew Our Family’s Secrets

The article spread faster than we could control.

Within twenty-four hours, thousands of people had seen it.

By the next morning, reporters were sending messages.

People wanted interviews.

They wanted explanations.

They wanted someone to blame.

And somehow, a story that had happened privately inside our home had become entertainment for strangers.

I hated that feeling.

The feeling of having your pain turned into a headline.

My father immediately called an emergency meeting.

Me.

Mia.

Claire.

Everyone sat around the dining table.

Nobody spoke at first.

Finally, my father said:

“We need to decide what happens next.””

Mia looked exhausted.

She hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

“I’ll step away from the foundation,” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She looked down.

“The foundation is supposed to help people. If I become a distraction, I should leave.””

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“Yes, I do.””

I leaned forward.

“You’re not the same person who destroyed that dress.””

“But people don’t know that.””

“They will.””

Mia laughed sadly.

“Will they?””

That question hurt.

Because she wasn’t wrong.

The internet loved simple stories.

Good person.

Bad person.

Hero.

Villain.

Nobody wanted complicated.

Nobody wanted to hear that people could make terrible choices and still change.

My father looked at her.

“Running away won’t fix this.””

Mia looked at him.

“Then what will?””

The room went silent.

Because nobody knew.

Then Claire spoke.

“I know who leaked it.””

Everyone turned.

My father’s expression changed.

“What?””

Claire looked nervous.

“I recognized the details.””

“How?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Because I told someone.””

My heart dropped.

“You did what?””

Claire looked ashamed.

“It was before.””

Before.

That word again.

Always before.

Always some secret waiting underneath.

My father stood.

“Who did you tell?””

Claire swallowed.

“My sister.””

I frowned.

“Your sister?””

She nodded.

“She was angry at me.””

“Why?””

Claire looked down.

“Because she thought I was protecting Mia too much.””

That surprised me.

For years, I thought everyone outside our home saw us as normal.

Apparently, they saw more than we realized.

“What did she do?”” my father asked.

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

My father stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She just stared.

Then she whispered:

“My sister.””

The room became silent.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But we saw Claire’s expression change.

Shock.

Fear.

Anger.

Then she hung up.

“What did she say?””

Claire looked at us.

“She wants to meet.””

“Why?””

Claire’s voice was barely audible.

“Because she says she knows the real reason Mia destroyed the dress.””

I looked at Mia.

Her face went pale.

“What?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“She says there is something we never knew.””

My father frowned.

“What could possibly be left?””

Nobody answered.

Because deep down, everyone knew.

There was always something.

The meeting happened the next day.

We met at a quiet restaurant outside town.

Claire’s sister arrived first.

Her name was Rachel.

I had never met her before.

She looked nervous.

Not confident.

Not like someone trying to create drama.

Like someone carrying guilt.

She sat down.

“I know you probably hate me.””

My father immediately responded.

“We don’t know you.””

Rachel nodded.

“Fair enough.””

She looked at Mia.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

She took a deep breath.

“For not stopping it.””

The words made my stomach tighten.

“Stopping what?””

Rachel looked at Mia.

“Your mother’s plan.””

Mia froze.

“My mother’s plan?””

Rachel nodded.

“She didn’t just want your father’s money.””

Everyone became still.

“What do you mean?”” my father asked.

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“She wanted control.””

Claire looked shocked.

“Rachel, stop.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“This has gone too far.””

She turned to us.

“Your mother was convinced that if you two became successful, she would lose her place in the family.””

I felt cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Is it?””

She pulled something from her bag.

A notebook.

An old one.

“I found this after she moved out.””

She placed it on the table.

Mia reached for it.

Her hands were shaking.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at her.

“Your mother’s journal.””

Nobody moved.

Then Mia opened it.

The first page had a date.

The date was one month before my graduation.

She read silently.

Then her face changed.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Mia looked up.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She wrote…”

She stopped.

May you like

Then whispered:

“She wrote that my dress was only the beginning.””
